Actually I agree with your post. A lot mediums are "dumbing down" content.
The reason: Too many gold-rush stock-hungry bidnezz people. For example I'm in a three year CS diploma course [stop laughing I know its a joke] and my Bidnezz teacher [have to take a class] spelt his name wrong and claimed that
0.96/1 is the same as 0.96:1 [hint they aren't]
The solution: Start educating bidnezz students in more advanced topics [certainly english and math].
The government should also favour advertisements and products that have a higher standard of intelligence. For example, a company that makes puzzles or math text books should get a tax credit while the makers of Pokemon don't.
That way you're free to be stupid, but it will pay more to be smart.
Other than that we can also just shoot and kill wall st. type people. Survival of the smart!

If I had mod points I would mod this up, though I'm sure that it would be modded as a troll by others. This post is one of the most clearly written that I have ever read on slashdot. Most of the points that he raises are true, however some are without merit. You are right that slashdot is not a great medium of original source material. However this is not it's intended purpose. I read this site daily as a digest (whether it be links to other sites or whatever) of the latest news that I am interested in. I am a 20 year old computer engineering student. I am a Nerd. I am slashdot's intended audience. I do not have the time each and every day to read The New York Times, the Washington Post, Scientific American, New Scientist; watch CNN; peruse Intel's, AMD's, and Sourceforge's websites to name a few. In a world where there is so much information created and distributed each day, there is only so much that I can be made aware of each day. It is my belief that slashdot makes me aware of these things much faster than if I were to find the information myself. A case in point, not being an american, and not happening to be watching TV at 1 or 2am on September 12 (Local Time) the first mention of the events of that day I had was from Slashdot.
In summary I think you are right that Taco, Roblimo, Timothy, et al. all have a lot to learn if they wish to become serious journalists, however I applaud them all for providing the service which they set out to: 'News for Nerds'.

Engaging in journalism implies a few things: 1) Verifying facts -- How many claims and allegations posted here are supported by two independent sources? Even one, for that matter? -- 2) Elimination of personal bias and opinion. 3) People called reporters who write their own stuff.
Engaging in Slashdotting seems to require blatant unsubstantiated assertion, rampant partisanship, and writing skills that peaked somewhere around the age of 10.
So, what's happening here isn't journalism. What's happening here is a one gigantic barroom debate organized by a handful of invisible instigators

It's like this column in my local newspaper about "computer help" or whatever. It's so painfully wrong I just can't bear it, so I don't read it. There ya go, I've given you your life back
slashdot is a place where news, percieved to be important to nerds in the near or distant future, is discussed and debated. So what if the stories are copied and pasted from other sources. The stories are just the tip of the iceberg; the real magic of slashdot is in the discussions and the posts that come about as a result of the story. If the story has any inaccurate points and/or claims, they are pointed out by the posters. Slashdot is a prime example of many brains picking at a story, and in the end the result is much more than the news or story that sparked the discussions. So whose journalistic integrity are you going to trust: 1) some news organization whose sole purpose is to spew back the same crap over and over again, and embelish its stories to sell you stuff you don't need OR 2) a discussion site like slashdot where creative people express their opinions on the story and really help to present a truer picture of what the news is really about, without any hidden agendas to sell you any products. You make the choice.

The notion of the government supporting the makers of more intelligent products is off for any number of reasons. A short list of responses to your post:
1. In a market economy, the cream rises to the top-- or, if all else is equal, the cheapest product will survive.
1a. The government does intervene from time to time in our controlled market economy-- dealing with monopolies, for example-- but it's not to reward one company for being better or worse than any other. It's to punish a company for breaking the law, or for encouraging the maintenace of the system, in the case of small business loans and such.
2. The inherent intelligence in any given product is utterly debatable, and the logistics of orchestrating such an idea are mind-boggling, let alone the questionable value of it in the first place.
3. Yes, there are stupid products out there that are popular; this is because stupid people buy them. You've nothing to do there but cope.
4. Fuss and fume all you like about this, but spelling, grammar, and diction are all a reflection of one's intelligence. If you wish to assert your dominance over the intellectual world of Slashdot, you're going to want to learn how to write a hell of a lot better than that.
5. Re: Shooting and killing "wall st. type people:" do you honestly think you can get away with making a broad statement about a bunch of people you've witnessed only in movies and get away unscathed? Except in particular cases-- nepotism, say-- it's safe to say that positions, particularly top positions, in the financial world have to be earned.
6. I would subscribe to your idea of "survival of the smart," but mostly just because I then wouldn't be so fed up with reading posts from posters like you.
I'm not a geek, nor am I a nerd. But I like coming to Slashdot, it reminds me of high school. When I would hang around the "Geeks" at lunch time. Sure, half of the time I couldn't understand what the hell they were talking about between all of the Dr. Who and DOS refrences. But they were the only ones who made an attempt to try to understand me. Slashdot allows me to throw down my two cents, and I have rarely been looked down on for it. Everyone here has an opinion on the things that get posted on this site, and that is why I keep coming back, I could give a damn about Linux or Microsoft. I just enjoy watching intellegent people debating back and forth, just like I did in High School.
You are judging slashdot by all the wrong criteria. You seem to be under the misapprehension that Slashdot is a news site staffed by journalists and find it lacking. Well, slashdot is not about reporting the news, it is a discussion forum and that's all. The editor's role is not to be an investigative reporter and develop stories but simply to provide grist for the mill by notifying the participants of the ongoing discussion of what other sites (presumably with real journalists) are reporting. The value in slashdot is not in the quality, uniqueness, or depth of it's content but that you (and I) get to throw in our two cents. And that we get to see and engage others who are throwing in their own thoughts.
As for your comments on the apparent lack of a work ethic on the part of the editors. All I can say is I hope your right - and God bless them. If slackers like that can not only make a living but actually strike it rich then there is hope for me. Though to be fair I do see your point. To the very small degree that Slashdot IS a journalistic endevour - pretty much limited to finding out what other sites are reporting - I agree with you that they should make at least some minimal effort to check facts (or maybe limit their sources to sites that do so) and professionally edit their own tiny editorial blurb.
Jon Katz is not the BEST writer on slashdot he is the ONLY writer on slashdot. I'm not sure why other people can't stand John Katz but I don't think it is because he is too challenging for them. Since he is a writer and slashdot is not about the writing he is not adding much of value. For my part I don't bother with him because he is an opinion writer who's opinions are sophmoric and who's writing is rambling and longwinded. That would all be forgivable if it he wasn't apparently under the misguided notion that his observations are insightful and important Deep Thoughts(TM) of wide ranging importance when they are actually rather vague, insular and shallow. I suppose like the stories from other sites he adds grist to the mill of discussion. I think of him as the staff flamebaiter instructed to blather on with his insipid insights to provoke outraged responses and inject meaningless contentions in to the discussion.
CNN is not legit. CNN made it looked like all the Palesitians were dancing and rejoicing after September 11. CNN also makes the Israeli army look like great humanitarians. CNN is one of the worst selective observers of reality. According to CNN a terrorist is nothing more than an insurgent that your government does not support, the ones your government supports are freedom fighters.
He's not a bad writer. Of course, he doesn't write in the terse, factual manner most people here seem to like; he takes much longer to make his points than is sometimes necessary (or than many concentration spans here), and discusses social issues that are more a matter of opinion than most other topics here. But this doesn't make him a bad writer, it just means that his style is more suited to traditional journalism than to a site like SlashDot.
It's simply that much of the time, he's telling us about ourselves things we already knew. Combined with the other factors, many SlashDot readers clearly don't see the point of reading him, and this spills over into the negative and often downright offensive posts about him. Which is a shame, as I think that the SlashDot community needs someone with his skills: not on the inside, telling us about ourselves, but on the outside, telling the world about us. I think Jon could be a great ambassador for us.

Anyone with a half a brain realizes that slashdot's usefullness (oh no spelling!!!) is in the intelligent discussion that follows the stories. It is not a source of original medium or pretty prose.

The reason I hate Katz so much is that the rest of the Slashdot crew - with the occasional exception of roblimo - have no pretensions of being -writers-. Yes, they're blurb-posters, and that's what they do. If there's anything serious in their lives, they don't even attempt to pretend that it has anything to do with Slashdot - or the Internet, for that matter.
Katz, on the other hand, has delusions of grandeur. He -thinks- he's a writer, when he's a mere spinner of tendentious, pseudo-intellectual phrases. He -thinks- he's being 'different', 'unique', 'insightful', and 'subversive', when in reality he's simply regurgitating the received wisdom of all the pimply fourteen-year-olds who own computers (paid for by their parents) and have vague ideas of 'freedom' and 'rights', unencumbered by any contact with the realities of life which take place away from keyboards, mice, and monitors.
So, not only is Katz a moron, he's a grandiloquent moron, a puffed-up, pretentious windbag whose tragicomic sense of self-importance is cheapened, and ultimately rendered meaningless, by the ephermeral, shallow nature of both his 'education' and his subject matter. His are tales told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
So, the only 'challenge' Katz poses for me is the sheer agony of picking through his oevure sufficiently to prepare an appropriately condescending and derogatory riposte to his pompous maunderings.

This is a good post that deserves some consideration. It is offtopic, but given the nature of /. this is not a bad thing. Frankly, offtopic posts often spark good discussions like this one forming now. I only wish they had a way to make it to the front page...

I like slashdot for its raw unfiltered nature. It is dynamic and unpredictable. The shit to gem ratio continues to rise with conversation volume not unlike usenet, but with one key difference: Slashdot has a central source sparking the discussion and that is what makes it interesting to me. Given a particular topic of interest, I can gather several viewpoints and think the thing over for a while. Makes a dull workday pass quicker if nothing else.
In short, cleaning up
Your spelling comments are interesting. Unfiltered conversation is going to have spelling errors, offtopic, and abuse mixed in. (mine do sans abuse!) Lighten up on the spelling and grammar problems and look at the conversation for what it is. These things work together as a feature if you think about it. The kiddies, posers and fools will all make those mistakes which serve to highlight them in the discussion. Filter their content, or give them click and drool tools to improve and they become harder to see.
Personally I worry about those that only read Slash and nothing else. This site is probably enabling the formation of some very questionable opinions, but again you get the good with the bad.
So I agree with you about the content of Slash compared to other media outlets, but sense that you have not correctly identified the purpose of the site. You want Slash to be more than it is. Asking if it should be is why I like your post.
Slashdot is a discussion board. Like minded people gather here to talk about things. Anyone with any critical thinking skills at all is going to come here to spark their interest, then move elsewhere to learn something, then perhaps come back to express their opinion about it.
You know during the events of the 11th, I never even considered reading Slash first. When I did happen to check, I was amazed. Slash was fast and the discussions were interesting. The editors are slow at times, and the topics misguided, but on that day they shined. Never thought about it until now, but maybe our editors are not working as hard as they could be. Perhaps they should.
Again, your post has merit. This should be a front page link for a couple of days. Everyone involved would learn something from the discussion that would follow. And the site would easily survive it. I for one would be reading and posting with interest.

You are definately over simplifying the jobs of the Slashdot editors. As the editor of a much smaller open source related news site (www.ofb.biz), I can tell you from experience that it takes a lot of time to find good news stories. Sure, the Slashdot editors receive many submissions, but is it really that much easier to sort through thousands of submissions? I certainly don't envy that job.
Also, I think you over look the fact that Slashdot works more like a "clearing house" for information, rather than a source of original content. For instance, this interesting story about Sony - would you have found it if not for Slashdot or some similar site? Probably not, unless you regularly read Japanese publications. I can't tell you how many things I wouldn't have read about on Linux, Microsoft, Computer Hardware, even science and other non-computer news if not for Slashdot. It's also worth noting that during the the aftermath of the WTC attack, when sites like CNN.com where struggling to hold on, Slashdot provided it's viewers with timely information and links which were much appreciated by (I'm sure) many people other than myself.
Finally, I think you are overlooking the fact that a site requires a lot more work than content alone. Whether it be updating and moving things over to a new version of Slashcode, fixing some newly discovered bug, or just trying to figure out an annoying MySQL error, sites - especially large ones - require a *lot* of work to keep up.
Anyway, perhaps Slashdot isn't for you, but to call it an easy job, or to say Slashdot's information isn't for those who think - is just plain silly. Unless of course you already knew everything about artificial eyes (see stories from earlier today), and have already started planning your own billion transistor processor (see the story about Intel from yesterday).

The troll has no merit or purpose other than noise. This guy for whatever reason asked the simple question "Should Slash be more than it is?" (My words, not his.)
I don't know why he asked it, but the way he asked it actually was good enough to get me to read it. Spontanious things like that happen. To filter them out with harsh rules would be cold and unreasonable.
So I say that the spirit of Slashdot really is about conversation, and when you are having good conversation among friends, this sort of thing is ok.

Alright I was reading a couple stories and I just decided to share this little

story about the time I hit it with a Jew girl using deception and cunning. LOL.
I mean it's not real hard to act like another person or make others believe you

When I was a senior in high school last year not long before my 18th birthday I
was just cruising through school. After we changed classes at the end of second
semester I got into a class with this really hot girl named Cindy who I was
sitting by in the seating chart, well I knew from the first day I was gonna try
and hit it with this girl, but I didn't think it would be nearly as complicated
as it turned out. One day in class we had to pair up and do this project (it was
history class) and it was on the Cold War, well into the convo we started
talking about those Jew Rosenberg's selling the atom bomb and I said "well what
the hell do you expect for those fucking kikes?" and she looked at me and said
"what did you just say?" and I repeated myself and she said, "You ignorant
asshole I'm Jewish," and I looked at her and said, "Well sux to be you" and
started laughing. Well we didn't talk the rest of the project, I just let her do
the work then I guess to be a dick I acted like I was scratching my arm and
pulled up the sleeve to show my Neo-Nazi tattoo to her (I am a proud and loyal
NNLR member) and she said, "I can't believe I am sitting next to a Nazi," and I
was like, "I am unfortunately not a Nazi, I missed the good old days," and
started laughing and man was she pissed.
To go on, well we went through the next few weeks barely saying anything to each
other and me and A.J. (a fellow NNLR in my class) would sometimes say some shit
to her. Well it pissed her off enough to try and get her boyfriend after me so
he came up to my table and asked me about some shit and I ended fucking him up
in the lunch room, I mean it was a weak fight with some Jew-loving soccer player
against me a pure Aryan linebacker. LOL. I ended up getting 10 days out for
drawing blood and I just cruised through that easy as hell.
When I came back I found out that sometime when I was gone she had broken up
with her boyfriend. I am not sure why, but it figures he gets his ass beat for
her and she dumps him later for something. Typical Jew. In class, she eyes me
when I sat down and didn't say anything to me, I started razzing her and was
like, "how's you boyfriend doing?" and she's like, "I am not going out with him
anymore but I am sure he's doing fine," and I said, "broke up with him after he
gets his ass beaten for you, that some kind of Hebrew thing?" and she said, "Oh
shut up you asshole, I am so tired of hearing you talk about that," and I razzed
her a little longer. Anyways, later in the month we had a project we had to do
out of class, and it had to be with my desk partner she was mad, but she's a
crazy A student and she asked me, "Well do you want to do the assignment at my
house or yours?" and I said, "Well I am not allowed to have Jews at my house"
and me and AJ started laughing, I was like, "Why don't you just do it?" and she
said, "'cause you're not getting an A for my work," so we ended up going to her
house well it's a typical Hebe home, with the 8 candle stuff and I knocked on
the door and her mom answered, "Hi, are you Luke?" and I was like, "In the
flesh," she said, "Come on in Cindy is in her room," and I looked around and saw
all this Jew stuff and I sort of scoffed, anyway I went to her room and she's
like, "Alright lets get started," and I was just looking around, "I don't think
I'll be able to concentrate in this Yid hol,e" and she's like, "Well then I'll
tell Mr. Deen that you didn't do anything," so I had to sit there and figure out
the project with her.
I wasn't really doing anything but nodding when she said something. While I was
sitting there I was scoping her and thinking what it would be like to get a
piece of Jew ass, I was thinking it the whole time I mean is there really
anything wrong with using one for sex? I mean not dating just fucking? and I
thought about that the whole time.
The night after I went home I was looking at my ceiling and thinking the whole
night on how to fuck Cindy, I was going over some ways and though well maybe
