"The Matrix" Website Updated

feelafel writes: "Corona's Upcoming Films movie news site reports that the official Matrix website, www.whatisthematrix.com, has been "reloaded" today. Click on the keyboard twice, and enter the password "reload" to get to the new material. There's QuickTime VRs, on the set shots and most likely a slew of new hidden stuff. Happy searching."

      Actually the higher you get in the game, the more codes they give you. The codes I know so far:
      chrysalis,
      page78,
      page98,
      page168,
      page 272, and
      sixtypages.
      This is on top of the reload code. You enter these by selecting the upper right screen after you get through the reload screen.

    Wow...I'm the first to admit that it's a pretty site, and there's probably a lot of fun stuff to do, but there's also something to be said for usable navigation. I wish I had time to click every single little screen to try to find some of the good stuff...

    Has anybody else noticed the lack of easily-navigated sites out there today? People seem to have forgotten the old "just because we can doesn't mean we should" motto..

      Try sitting in a "web design" college class. Where the motto is "if it loads in under a day its incomplete".

      For example, in one lab we had to use CSS stuff. Which is all good [of course I've completely forgotten how todo them now since I never use em]... anyways. I did a rather plain webpage that did use CSS styles and anyways the teacher said I didn't work "hard enough" on it.

      Most people in my class think that "flash animations" are stndard HTML elements and no site is complete without them.

      Oh more on point, WTF, what's up with the stupid movie? When is it comming out?

      Coming Summer 2003... They had to reshoot all the shots that had Aaliyah with Jada Pinckett-Smith, and plus the Oracle died (dunno what they're doing about that...)

      According to the IMDB, both The Matrix Reloaded (the second one) and The Matrix Revolutions (the third one) are coming out in 2003.

      I originally thought they were coming out this year, but I suppose not.

      that lock fonts using CSS should be tied down while the tendons are ripped....

      I would have flipped out and killed everyone in the room, starting with the instructor. I work plenty hard on "plain" pages that have good cross-platform code.

      When I read the Matrix site news here my first thought was, "you couldn't PAY me to visit that site, it'll be pure aggravation."

      Heck, I haven't even visited fox.com/24 and I love the show. They drill the URL into my brain every chance they get but I know it'll be a load of Flash crap.

      Not in my department. The classes I've taken have focused on usable design and platform compatibility. I now have a deep hatred for Netscape 4.x, so much DHTML doesn't work right in it. Unfortunately we ran out of time to get into accessibility so all the class heard was early comments to make sure to have ALT tags on your images.

      So sadly true. The worst part is half the time they want you to use some P.O.S. WYSIWYG editor like front page or dreamweaver. Sad.. very, very, very sad.

      I dropped the class I was in after they refused to not make me use either dreamweaver/frontpage and I insited on not only coding it by hand but *shock* validating my HTML with the W3C's validator. The teacher was none too happy when I pointed out that most of hte crap he was teaching wasn' valid HTML standards and shouldn't be used. Oh well. Hooray for college education.

    "If I could choose the real world or the Matrix, I'd choose" the real world cause it doesn't make me gag on it's plugins.

    Be forewarned, this page is plugin hell. In two minutes of browsing I've run into Flash, Quicktime VR, RealPlayer. The Matrix is a highly complicated thing I guess...

    Doesn't matter, I'll still pay through the nose to go to any sneak peak and I'll probably see it in theaters at least 3 times as well.

    If you picked up the Matrix redux DVD, it contains a TON of material on the movie and previews of the upcoming ones.

    On the site play the shockwave game and once you get through the various stages you're given a password to access the Matrix book preview (which they discuss on the DVD). The book contains tons of pics and stuff from the movies, the anime shorts, storyboards and other great stuff.

      There is only one "The Matrix" movie cut, but there is another dvd that has more goodies called "The Matrix Revisited" (see other post).

      That Matrix Revisited DVD is a trip... they licensed four tracks of my music and hearing Keanu doing a voice-over on one of them is downright freaky (in his wooden monotone).

      Believe it or not, that movie has a real cult following.

      Oh, and I had been using the name "Simulacra" long before Matrix came out...

      Realistically, you would have to be quite a fan to appreciate "Revisited."

    With the current catch-22 bandwidth dilemma most sites are having, this navigation scheme is absolutely ingenious.

    Someone visits the site, realizes how pretty/cool/etc. it is, can't find their way around, ands leaves. So they get all the praise, without all the bandwidth!

    Criminy, that was one of the worst web sites I've seen.

    Marketting seems to have devolved to pretty pictures, and has nothing to do with useful information.

    Well, get a clue - the reason I buy something is because I have some information that makes me believe that my life will be improved in some fashion as a result of the purchase. This site does nothing to give me the information I need to make a purchase decision. And NO, I am NOT going to download 5 plug-ins either!

      Perhaps it seemed like there wasn't much because you only looked at the reloaded section?

      I looked around, but I didn't get much past the home page because of the crummy navigation and heavy use of plugins. If this is better than most movie sites, than the genre as a whole is very lacking.

      Pretty pictures does not equal usability.

      How will buying a ticket to a movie improve your life? Maybe because you'll get some enjoyment from the pretty pictures on the screen.

      I think movies are going to have to start making two websites. Requiem for a Dream's web site got me thinking about this. It's a beautiful site that adapts the movie to the web medium well, but it's got no information. You'd think the makers of an independent film who have to struggle to pay the bills would want people to know where to see or buy the damn thing. Even the distributor, Artisan Entertainment, only linked to the above site.

      I'm all for Flash as a medium for creative expression, but sometimes I just want some info on a white background.

    On the binary code entry screen, 11000 gets you another hidden interview. Any other binary codes?

    I have no link since it's all Flash, but here's how to get to it:

    - Once you type in 'Reload' to get to the Reloaded area, you must choose Enhanced Version
    - On the top right, there's a little vertical bar with a yellow light. This is the Option bar, click it once to expand.
    - Once expanded, click once on the grey square just to the right of the 'HTML Version' button.
    - Click the green square you just opened up, and the binary entry terminal drops down.

    Does anybody have a REALLY good feeling about this movie? I do. I think that this is one sequel that is going to rock its fans just as much as the original. These guys know what they have to live up to, and I think they're going to do it!

    Unlike Star Wars, which could go either way... I'm quite confident in this one, and have been from the start.

      You do? Really?

      I (and some of my friends) have a really bad feeling about this movie. The basic idea works like this: "A prequel would be cool/decent/ok/whatever the opion of the first movie was, but a sequel will suck rancid goat nuts."

      Why? Well, let's put it this way, take away the special effects from the first movie, and you're left with a plot with huge holes in it and a bunch of heavy handed Biblical metaphors.

      Now, put the special effects back in, and you have an above-average action movie (Ok, it was WAY above average at the time, but not any more.) Which brings us to the next problem: The special effects aren't so 'special' anymore. Everyone's done it, everybody's seen it. There's no 'woah, that was cool' when we get a slow-bullet time effect or the sudden freeze, rotate camera, & continue effect. We've seen it beaten to death, propped up to seem like it's still alive, and beaten some more.

      To sum up: Matrix sequel doesn't look too good IMHO.
      (Especially since I've heard that Keanu will fly in this movie. If there's any part of the movie that made me want to groan, it was that flying sequence at the end. Both unneccesary & horrible!)

    Once you get to the flash panel after typing reload into the keyboard, click on the panel pull-out that's on the far right. Click on the small button to the right of "HTML version" twice. You get a panel asking for binary input. Here are the codes:

    • 11011011: a Quicktime VR of something in some ship
    • 10110110: an interview with the stunt coordinator
    • 00011000: an interview with a concept illustrator

    And yes, I did try all 256 codes :-P The interviews are pretty short and the VR totally unrevealing, so this secret was kind of lame.

    The movie is art. The website is art.

    When you go to the website you see "cool" art (or so they hope) and it makes you think that the art they are selling as their main product (the film) is of the same quality.

    And the navigation on the site is not anywhere near as bad as some people make it out to be. It only requires a little creativity and intelegence to figure out.

    Yes, the instructions were confusing. Here is how to get to the keyboard:

    1. Surf to What is the matrix
    2. Click on "enhanced version" (on the top of the page)
    3. Click on the keyboard (on the lower-right side of the page).
    4. Type reload in the popup window's edit box.
    5. Click on the enter button
    6. have fun!
