Playstation 3 In the Works
Kredal writes "The Independent is running a story about Sony's work on a new console, being built around online games, such as Everquest Adventures and Final Fantasy 11. No word on backwards compatability, but expect it to be the X-Box killer if it is."
FF11 already has me lusting.
Looking at all these new shinny console's and neverending online RPG's makes me wonder why the hell I should care.
The problem as I see it is that I have no personality of my own.
If you look at worldwide figures, not just the US ones, you'll find that the parent post was correct. X-Box is taking a major-league beating in every other territory. The last I saw UK numbers, even on preorders the Gamecube had outsold the X-Box, and for the first week of April it was only 20% away from being outsold in Japan by the Sega Dreamcast, a console that was considered 'dead' over a year ago.
Mind you, this doesn't deny you your second claim - the X-Box is indeed the most technically powerful of the three consoles. Its just not being bought.

They key to competing with Microsoft will be to continue concentrating on the game performance while allowing enough expandability for the user to add on features to make the PS3 compete with full fledged home computers. I'm sure the final design of the PS3 is going to have a hard drive, a decent amount of RAM, and an Ethernet port.
Any semblance to a PC is a prime reason for me NOT to buy a console. I hate PC gaming, and have hated it since the games went to hardware 3d. I've spent more time chasing bugs in drivers that create odd artifacts in games (or lock the whole machine) than I have actually playing games in the last few years. Anything that will allow console game developers to get away with the stupid 'wait for the next patch' crap is a step in the wrong direction.
The best way to accelerate a windows box is at 9.8 meters per second square.

We need an x-box killer... looking at Microsoft strategy for the last decade, if the X-box gains any kind of market dominance there won't be any other gaming platforms anymore.

A day? Sorry, I work two jobs, play games and still find time to waste on this site. It took me ten total hours to complete the first one, not the three that everyone seemed to think it should. But then again, I'm all for diversity. MGS2, FFX, GTA3, GT3, and all the rest take up my gaming time. Fortunately one of my jobs keeps me supplied with new games... Xbox? I upgraded my PC for the same price as an Xbox (I kept my case) and have twice the power, and much more functionality. Why bother? Espescially when halo comes to pc in the next month or so. Won't see any slowdown on my system, and I can plug in my ps2 controller and not have to look at my hand to tell which buttons I'm pushing. I'd heard the xbox controller was bad, and then I tried it. Horrible! This is what "gamers" wanted? Right...
Shift happens. Fire it up.

You are a moron. It would be simple to provide for PSX2, either follow the example of the PS2 and have the machine detect what kind of disk is in the drive like the PS2 does now, or have a button labled "PS1/PS2 Emulation" on the front of the console.
