Eavesblogging the Internet Law Program

Last week the Berkman Center held their second annual Internet Law Program, an intensive course in (surprise) internet law and developments. You probably didn't spend the time/money to attend, but the topics covered are interesting enough (to me anyway) to check it out even second-hand. Dan Gillmor attended and posted his notes: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5 part 1 and Day 5 part 2. Donna Wentworth was there, trying to record the seminar in real-time; hopefully she's learned her lesson. There is tons of interesting stuff in there - it's worth your time to read through if you have any interest in the subject matter at all.

The last few months I have been doing some research into the trolling phenomenon on slashdot.org. In order to do this as thoroughly as possible, I have written both normal and troll posts, 1st posts, etc., both logged in and anonymously, and I have found these rather shocking results:

More moderator points are being used to mod posts down than up. Furthermore, when modding a post up, every moderator seems to follow previous moderators in their choices, even when it's not a particularly interesting or clever post [slashdot.org]. There are a LOT more +5 posts than +3 or +4.

Logged in people are modded down faster than anonymous cowards. Presumably these Nazi Moderators think it's more important to burn a user's existing karma, to silence that individual for the future, than to use the moderation system for what it's meant for : identifying "good" and "bad" posts (Notice how nearly all oppressive governments in the past and present do the same thing : marking individuals as bad and untrustworthy because they have conflicting opinions, instead of engaging in a public discussion about these opinions)

Once you have a karma of -4 or -5, your posts have a score of -1 by default. When this is the case, no-one bothers to mod you down anymore. This means a logged in user can keep on trolling as much as he (or she) likes, without risking a ban to post on slashdot. When trolling as an anonymous user, every post starts at score 0, and you will be modded down to -1 ON EVERY POST. When you are modded down a certain number of times in 24 hour, you cannot post anymore from your current IP for a day or so. So, for successful trolling, ALWAYS log in.

A lot of the modded down posts are actually quite clever [slashdot.org], funny [slashdot.org], etc., and they are only modded down because they are offtopic. Now, on a news site like slashdot, where the number of different topics of discussion can be counted on 1 hand, I must say I quite like the distraction these posts offer. But no, when the topic is yet another minor version change of the Linux kernel [slashdot.org], they only expect ooohs and aaahs about this great feat of engineering. Look at the moderation done in this thread [slashdot.org] to see what I mean. Digging deep into the history of slashdot, I found this poll [slashdot.org], which clearly indicates the vast majority does NOT want the moderation we have here today. 'nuff said. Feel free to use this information to your advantage. I thank you for your time. Fucker.

  20. Michael Jackson: makes Jon Katz look normal by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

July 10, 2002 -- Wacko Jacko says he's no freako.
Michael Jackson yesterday lashed out at accusations that he's a gay child molester who bleaches his skin so he won't look black, saying they're part of a "conspiracy" to "turn the public against him."

"I was called a freak, a homosexual, a child molester. That I bleach my skin. Everything to turn the public against me," Jackson said before a packed house at the Rev. Al Sharpton's Harlem headquarters. "It was a complete conspiracy."

In 1993, Jackson was accused in a lawsuit of molesting a 13-year-old boy. The child was one of the many young pals, including Macaulay Culkin and Emmanuel Lewis, the self-proclaimed King of Pop entertained at his bizarro fun-park ranch, Neverland, in California.

Jackson settled the suit, reportedly for $15 million to $24 million.

Yesterday, the usually reclusive Jackson continued a wild, high-profile attack he started Saturday, when he threw down the gauntlet to his record-label boss, Tommy Mottola of Sony, calling the exec was a racist.

Jacko - whose face has been changed drastically by plastic surgery - launched a diatribe as he explained why he is the industry's newest black activist.

"I know my race. I just look in the mirror. I know I'm black," Jackson said, as hundreds exploded in cheers.

"We are all brothers and sisters - no matter what color we are."

Wearing a black jacket and pants, Jacko said the music industry turned on him "overnight" after he displaced white artists as the planet's No. 1-selling artist.

Music moguls "are liars. They manipulate our history books. You must know that," he said, as the crowd cheered him on. "If you go to the bookstore at the corner, you won't see one black face. You'll see Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones."

He claimed the industry attack on him began after "I broke Elvis' record and the Beatles' record" in sales.

The Harlem meeting - at which Sharpton and lawyer Johnnie Cochran said they would take on the music industry for taking advantage of minority artists - drew hundreds of Sharpton supporters and dozens of white teens eager to see Jackson.

Jackson, who was pumping his fist in the air as Sharpton yelled, "No justice, no peace," spent much of the two-hour meeting blowing kisses to fans and even giving a thumbs-up to one who screamed, "I love you, Michael!"

Sharpton, who stood shoulder to shoulder with Jackson, said he wants to meet with music-industry heads to discuss properly compensating minority artists.

Sharpton also praised Jackson for appearing at yesterday's meeting.

"Michael is no wacko," he said. "He's still an icon."

When asked if he wanted to meet with Mottola about racism, Sharpton said, "Yes, but it's not limited to one company. I want to reach out to all of them."
