Besides that not even being the case here, what does that have to really do with anything? "Ease of use" is not just an Apple only deal, and though it is one of the major selling points for their products, it is not why I shun the system.
"First of all, the service would be integrated into an app that Mac users already use - iTunes. No "going" somewhere online and "finding" the song. And they licensed one-click purchasing from Amazon, so you set up your payment into once, and that's it. One-click purchasing. Couldn't be easier. And it gets automatically filed into your music library. Yay. Easy.
"
So they are, in a sense, going to be like Microsoft. "Hey, if you have our Product, look at how easier this can be! Those who don't have it, you can still enjoy it, but not as much as if you had Our Product!". So since I don't use a mac, I guess I will have to do 2-4 clicks as punishment for not buying Apple. How Rude.
"Also, the service will not use MP3, but rather AAC, which is a much higher quality compression at even smaller sizes. So until you've had some experience with this codec, please, do keep quiet about its quality.
"
I find it a bit humorous how I get told to "keep quiet" on a codec I never mentioned. As for me assuming it was going to be an MP3 based service, that was "My Bad". But AAC is not a standard codec on PC systems (Nix/Win), and I have a feeling someone else is going to fire back along the lines of "Well, on my mac it is!".
So, with all that, and the chance that they will extend themselves more to Mac users for "ease of use.", No one has still yet come forth and said why this service is going to be better than the rest of the services already established (eMusic, dMusic, etc.). Is it just because Apple is going to offer it, or is it going to be because you will find the service to be on par, if not better, than the rest?
And if I was just out to make you look dumb, I'd tell you that it's Not the CD's themselves that cut the range, it's the format that they are recorded in. CD's hold data, you record and encode music into data to store on a CD. Those frequencies are lost prior to the CD's press. Therefore it's not even close, or even sane to blame a CD for any loss in quality (unless of course it has been corrupted by dust, scratch, or any other type of damage.).It's just media.
Then again, I'm not out to make you look dumb, you did a superb job on your own.
As for DVD-A, deffinately a nice format for music to be recorded in. But have you looked into the cost of using such a format? It's Expensive when compared to the common methods and technologies used today to record music for distribution. And because of the expense, it is not, nor will it be, widely used until the cost of using it drops, which will more than likely be when a newer format comes around that will offer the ability to record even more channels, and offer superior playback capabilities compared to DVD-A. To add another drawback to DVD-A compared to the average CDA, DVD-A does not "compress" down as far as the typical formats on your music CD's. Therefore requires more media space for storage, which means the use of high capacity media such as DVD Media. So there's even more expense to the whole process for mass distribution of music in DVD-A format. So, even though DVD-A is higher quality, it will be a long time before it will replace the format(s) used today in the production of the average music CD.
And I'll just leave that childish line about being squashed and bits alone.
See I have a couple of different reasons why this doesn't hit me as a fair deal from apple. Reason one is that I have an eMusic account, same premise. You pay a monthly $10 fee, and you have unlimited downloads of music off their service (And there is a lot that they offer.). Great place if your into punk music too, Epitaph Records is always releasing titles to eMusic for exclusive downloads.
Why would I pay $1 a track, $15 a cd when I can go to a used Record/CD store, pick-up used copies of the artists I want to hear for about $6-$9 a pop. And lets say that Artist releases 5-6 Songs off said album I got as a used CD, Those with this music service from apple will have to go out, get to the site, log in, find the track, pay for track, wait for confirmation of the payment being recieved, then once that confirm is recieved - download it, and then play it where as all I had to do was find case, open case, remove cd, insert cd, play, enjoy.
Oh and I don't have to worry about falling victim to someone else's idea of "High Quality". Commonly people and services will encode at 128 or 192 to save space on their drives, and if you even remotely concidered yourself an audiophile, such sampling would be really sub-standard to your ears. =)
Besides, I for one am still really leary of any site that wants me to pay for digital downloads, what's really there to stop the RIAA or some of their Brain Washed supportive Artists from coming after members on that service? And what's worse from such acts like in the case of Napster, this time they'll have your Real Name, Real Address, Real Credit Card information, etc where as on Napster you at least had Annoniminity from such worries.
"At these points, 9-foot-high chain-link fences, topped with curled razor wire, keep hikers away from Los Alamos lands. But as Route 4 proceeds along LANL property, these imposing barriers drop to trios or quartets of aging barbed wire, the kind of fences used to keep cows from straying off a farm."
Who's to say LANL isn't developing nuclear equiped cows? Besides the fact the normal "Bombs" they drop in the dairy's can be smelled for miles, no one would suspect them to be able to blast people away for miles. Just think about...
I see a double edge sword with basing EFI with a common language like C. It's great because C isn't that difficult of a language to learn, and most colleges around the US still offer courses teaching the language (great news for those of you looking to pick up a few extra course credits.) Which tells me that sooner or later there might be an abundance of utilities written to use within your future EFI setup.
But on the cutting side of this blade, I see that using a language that is pretty accessible to learn, could mean even more havoc in a already pretty chaotic realm of keeping dirty malicious code off (y)our systems. And what about Paladium? Is it me or does this give a big green flag to the RIAA and other big corps trying to cash in on supporting them, to be able to push thier "Digital Rights" acts?
So forgive me if I'm not doing cartwheels Intel fans, I just see this as a great idea for use in a perfect world, but deffinately no good for this one we live in.
I remember when, back in the day, people wanted a computer that was bad enough to dim the lights of a home, and was loud enough to let everyone know that they were processing something.
Now a days, and I think it's due to our old age, we want our machines quiet....Let me say it now, getting old sucks.
I take it you missed the news about our State (Cal.) and our Licencing of Oracle. We over paid for the package big time, but it took someone else to notice what had been done before anyone took action to correct the problem.
So even though our state saving money sounds good to us tax payers, it's not always what's on the minds of the IT managers of our local governments apparently.
There are computers in Venezuela? J/K, but it is nice to see linux reaching futher into the MS Empire, though not a very big account for MS I bet, but still one that's news worth I guess.
Nice, but they can still goto www.slashdot.com, and not to mention the sites that port the headlines, or even those who are subscribed to git the juicy bits of news sent to their mailbox.
I say if your out to motivate a developer, or even a would be, take away the soda machine for a couple of weeks. This goes for the coffee machine as well.
You must have grown up in a really nice and technology inclined area of the world, cause even here in Southern California, where I've lived my entire life, is just not placing computers with Windows in their classrooms and labs.
I remember using Mac's in school for the majority of my time (from grade school on up through High School). If this chain were true, why am I not a Mac user? If I had any experience w/ DOS and/or Windows, or PC's for that matter, it was because of outside influences and/or work.
Though this 'Chain' will be correct in select areas, it's not the reason that linux can't get a break, nor breaking this 'chain' will cause Linux to spring forward and become the new fad that everyone must have. It's still missing a lot of things that windows offers, and it's not just going to become everyones OS's of choice just cause Governments want to switch over to it.
Unless Linux wants to push toward cloning the Windows Interface and have it react as windows does (From how a user can just turn the machine on, and 20 seconds later they can sign onto AOL, to just double clicking to install updates to the system itself.), it will never break the chain.
Linux's real problem lies in the people, and unless it can provide an environment that will allow even the most illiterate user to be able to function as they would within a windows environment, all linux will continue to get is elitest's, rebels and us uber-geeks that are willing to learn something new. And contrary to popular belief, we aren't as large in numbers compared to the amount of people in the world who just prefer to read their email than know how that email travelled to them.
Honestly, do you really want to know what a sellout is? Metallica w/ Ja Rule. Take your pick there on who is the bigger Sellout, but I can't see either set of fans (Metallicas or Ja rules) appreciating the stuff that's being put out by ths terrible pairing. I gave it a chance, cause I enjoyed Metallica's track they did w/ Dj Spooky on the Spawn sound track, but this stuff w/ Ja Rule is just absolutely crap.
If anyone of you have happened upon a couple of comments of mine, you'll realize I'm no ModWhore, but when someone mentions something that is related to the story at hand, I don't think that deserves a moderation of 'Offtopic'.
The story refered to GNUtella in a comparison, and I've seen people get 'Interestings' when talking about Lemons when the topic is about Oranges.
And I'll admit, like it or not, I too am a bit lost as to why Slashdot didn't feel the Suicide of Gene wasn't note worthy enough to place a story on the front page. Is it to say that the new motto around here is going to be 'News for Nerds. Stuff that matters, except in some cases'? And it really can't be said that it wasn't something that us, the readers, wouldn't have cared to read about, I mean I've seen more than a few posts from different people making reference to the same story as this post and the one it is in reply to all over the different story forums.
Anyways, my offical take on Peercast is that I'm gonna wait for the beta to end. Novel idea, but I don't think the software is par for the course yet.
Why is it that whenever someone decides to come off like a dumbass on here, at least 2-5 people must follow suit? Besides, the question was what sources could one use (perferably Online), to wet someone's tastebuds to a genre they might not have really ever listened to.
I guess unfortunately, I am a fan of Oakenfold's, Moby's, Aphex Twin, Orbital, And the like. Mostly mainstream due to the fact that they were easily accessable to hear (concerts, commericals, etc.). And I have always found it disturbing, if not just flat out childish, when people come off with dumbass ideas of who and how you should listen to music. (shrug) I just don't get why people feel that when a band get's noticed and famous why they have the urges to start labeling a band they supposedly once loved, 'Sellouts'. Cause they appear on MTV? Hell, that's an accomplishment anymore, to have your video/music played inbetween one of their TV Shows.
Anyways, this is all stuff for a different topic or even a different forum. But to share a couple of links in support of the real topic at hand, I stumbled upon a primer over at http://phobos.plato.nl/e-primer/ which attempts to explain the different sub-genres of the catagorie. And if your friend(s) aren't one(s) to read, you can always send them over to WinAmp radio, here. And if that doesn't do it for you, go google.
After reading up on some Internet Laws, I have discovered that all the slanderous and undue moderation that has been done to my above post has violated my EULA. =P
Why should it be a joke? Because the Author of the Article didn't give you, the reader enough scientific fact to hold up the person's discovery that the author was reporting on?
"The article is probably a prank (or the result of a prank) or written by someone without any technical background."
As possible as that is, according to my calendar, it is the 8th of July, and not the 1st of April, and the article resides on the Washington Post, oh whom, to the best of my knowledge, aren't ones to Pranks and/or Sarcasitic Articles and Stories in the Fashion of what one might find on the onion.com.
But what I find so odd on this subject is everyone's close-minded'ness on this subject. Why can't a solution, comprised of other materials, including chicken feathers, but held to the same precious light as silicone? The majority of posts I've read so far gives me the feeling there's some Silicone union in effect, and if anyone has any idea of something possibly better, then it's the union's job to send those comments and ideas by way of Hoffa. =P
Anyways, I agree, the article was not the strongest one ever written, but engage the brain's a bit more people, if your not convienced, hunt around a bit and see what other information you can discover about this before you jump here and make a foolish comment just to get Karma points.
"Wool's team took chicken feathers and plant oils and molded them into a composite material that approximates the shape and feel of silicon. When the researchers tested it for speed, they found that the composite allowed movement at about twice the rate of silicon."
Even in the article, the guy admits it sounds strange and somewhat crazy, But as the ariticle says, and excerpt above ques to, their are researching for a replacement to silicon, and better yet, a replacement that can out perform silicon. The article also goeson to state that there are other 'Alternatives' in the works, and that this idea might not even, ahem, 'Fly', and even if it does, it won't be for years. So rest assured, we all don't have to race out and find ourselves any 'Foster Farms' case badges anytime soon.
"Why are users immediately forgiven for not even taking the least amount of effort to look for a solution to their confusion in the manual."
Pardon me? I don't know about other fields, but here in the computer field, more so admin and support areas, we aren't inclined to admit we know what 'Forgive' means. I mean, if the above is true, does this mean I work in the last dept on earth that signs the occasional support reply w/ "RTFM" or "Ticket # ID10T" ????
It's always nice to get a visual confirmation of a through-slashdoting.

And I remember seeing a couple of these back in the day (TV Watches), nice idea for the gadget lover, but even then seemed kind of a waste for us practical people that prefer calculators on our watches. =P
Most PC's are solid machines running a crappy/faulty OS (Any flavor of an MS Product you'd like.) Now, the goal is to present the opposite, take a solid operating system and put it on a crappy/faulty machine? I guess the worst part is, someone wants to fork over a large chunk of change just for this 'miracle'? That's just plain nutty.
Anyways, back to setting up my Dreamcast as a webserver. =)
As if there isn't enough 'Electronic' Leashes in the world now a days. It looks cool, but I have my doubts if will even play a part in any practical company. Most places that require this type of reliable communication already use Hand Radios (Walkie Talkies), and I don't think being able to give voice commands ("Find me a manager", or "Clean up in Isle 5") will lure most away from something seemingly already dependable. And that's not even talking about the cost to set this all up.
But I agree, it is a very novel, Star Trek style, gadget, that has some use and meaning, but I don't see it going too far outside the bounds of the Techno-Hip companies.
How about Doh, and not being so grump about it.
"The ringtone, inaudible to humans,....."
Ok, I give, how am I going to know when I'm getting a call then? Move to mosquito infested parts of the land, and wait for them to suddenly scatter?
Other than that, it's nice to see that now mosquitos will fall victim to people who just have to mess with their ringtones all the time.
Besides the wav making me jump out of my skin, anyone else find that one of their 3 catagories is titled "Gas Stool"?

Can see the sponsorship stickers now in that catagory... "Sponsored by Del Taco(tm)" Or "Fueled by Green Burrito(tm)"
Find Site -> Say Ahhh, Ooooo, Eeeee! -> View -> Source (Or Ctrl+U) -> Steal, erm Borrow Code -> Wahlah.
I guess by that, we're more inspired by "Non-Fiction". =)
"Obviously you've never used an Apple product :)"
Besides that not even being the case here, what does that have to really do with anything? "Ease of use" is not just an Apple only deal, and though it is one of the major selling points for their products, it is not why I shun the system.

Say it ain't so!
It's always nice to get a visual confirmation of a through-slashdoting. "Warning: Too many connections in /staff/WWW/Dept/web/deadch/pn_714/html/pnadodb/dr ivers/adodb-mysql.inc.php on line 108
