Rings Around Earth From Ancient Meteorites

HorsePunchKid writes "According to an article on CNN (SNL version), ancient meteorites may have glanced off of the surface and shattered, causing rings around the Earth. These rings, which may have persisted for hundreds of thousands of years, could have had a profound effect on the climate in tropical regions, where the rings would block out light from the Sun. Still rather speculative, but the theory may help explain some patterns observed in the geological record. The idea has been around for a while, and some scientists are skeptical."

    I wouldn't know what to think of the demo because I won't allow a machine running Linux to taint my retinas with its detestable GUI.

    Will there be any bible thumpers in here saying things like this, soon?:

    Read the bible! It says nothing about any rings, so, there aren't any. You liberal logical freethinking skeptical scientists always try to impose communism on us religious zealots :( There are no rings!

    "Yeah, I was having trouble sleeping last night when all of the sudden I got this 'theory'. You know how saturn has those rings? Yeah I always wished that earth had them. So I figured I go around telling everybody that the Earth had rings at one point too. I mean really saturn just looks so much cooler. Case in point, would you rather have a geo or a saturn? Even though I have no evidence what so ever and this is completely unsubstatied all sorts of websites have picked this up. Most of my colleagues don't believe me. "
