There is a difference between being insensitive and racism. There is a difference between flatout defaming a racial or ethnic group and doing something that irritates people. People are going to bring their own interpretation when viewing things. How much of the uproar is from creator and how much is from the viewer? Where do you draw the line?

Can you even explain what the difference is between "intentional" and "unintentional" racism? Have you seen all three of the adds? When I saw the adds I saw two people fighting. It might have just as well been two white people or two black people, or two a red and a blue person. With the way that the white person was very white and the way the black person was very black, it was very surreal. It was not realistic at all. Anybody offended by it was attaching their own meaning to it which is entirely possible, and people can't help it. But there are people like me who were brought up being blind to race. Seeing people as people. Personifying the fight of the black psp vs the white psp isn't inherently racist unless you bring your own baggage along. The only thing I got out of it was "Cool another sony product I'm not going to buy."

I agree. The company is more than one person there are probably hundreds of people working there. As management it is your job to make sure that the people there continue to get paid. If one person is making it impossible(or harder) to do that then you're doing a disservice to those hundreds of other people by not letting that person go. If your options are Paying 501 people for a couple more months or paying 500 indefinately the decision is simple. That's more than likely a gross exageration of the situation, but we don't know the details at all. It's silly for us to be arguing without knowing anything and if he really feels he was wronged, it will be settled in court.

It wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't made it look like such an obvious cutscene with the fans camera angles/pans/wipes and whatever. Having to go back and do everything over just because I wasn't paying attention to the usual dull cutscene was kind of annoying.

Microsoft products for the most part do work pretty well out of the box. Its unfortunate that they don't adhere to any standards that are created by somebody other than themselves. Microsoft products may seem to be great to the end user. But for developers a lot of the way they do things can really be a headache. About 6 months after windows was released I was trying to use the IMAPI to automate CD burning. The API was so poorly documented. I had to look at the method signatures in the DLL to guess at what I needed to do in order to get things to work sometimes. In linux I can just look at the source and I'll be able to get some clue as to what is going on. Or the developer who put in some API will have a tutorial because he'll want people using it. It's just more in-line with my way of thought as a developer. I think all of the OSes mentioned have a place. I think MacOS is hands-down the best operating system for people who are new to computers or don't use comptures often. It stresses simplicity over everything else. It works, its pretty, its fun. It just works Windows I don't know about it. It has become the defacto OS. Its greatest strength is its ubiquity. This means there is a huge software base for it. The operating system itself may have issues, but the strong software base keeps it alive. Linux/BSDs have their place. They're not quite yet ready for desktop though the first incarnations are there and they're getting stronger. Right now the biggest value is the ability to run a homogenous OS on heterogenous hardware. You tweak it, you can play with it. Its solid and doesn't do anything more than you to tell it to. Its not a question of which operating system is better, its which operating system is better for the situation. That's what seems to be constantly overlooked.

I guess I can see how you would come to this.

I started using solely linux around 4 years ago. One of the first things I did was install apache and play around with that. I got it working with a little effort. After that I always built it from scratch. I eventually decided to try using apache out of the portage tree and it was set up as soon as I ran emerge and setup the configs in /etc/conf.d I've been using the gentoo build ever since then.

Anyways I had to develop some webapp and my boss wanted me to do it in php on IIS. We had a hell of a time getting all of the authentication and settings, we couldn't quite get it all working. We had trouble with ssl and a few other things. so my co-worker and I dropped apache on it and got it working with SSL in about 10 minutes.

I guess the short version of the story is: Hire MS sys admins for MS systems and here Linux sys admins for Linux systems. Rather than saying one is easier than the other, it might be better to say that one comes more naturally to a given user. And since I'm at a school with a bunch of nerds and almost all of the people I know prefer to run linux, there's a good chance that we can probably get something like apache setup more easily than IIS.

The XL version probably doesn't have to deal with memory management or raw parsing of the text.
