Why Do Games and Game Studios Fail?

LukeG writes "This new article discusses the reason behind games and their developers failing, noting the distance of those selling the games, from those that buy them as one possible cause. Doomed games such as Bablylon 5 come under the spotlight, while the ubiquitous Duke Nukem Forever is also touched upon." For me, this article brought to mind the twin disasters of Fallout Tactics and the Farscape based game.

man pages are divided into "sections":

      1) commands (crontab, open)
      2) syscalls (open, select)
      3) C library stuff (printf, sqrt)
      5) file formats (crontab, fstab)
      8) more commands (swapon, mount)

I have no idea if 4,6, or 7 are ever used. I'm really not clear on the difference between 1 and 8. Maybe I should "man man" sometime.

If you want to read about the crontab command, do "man 1 crontab". If you want to read about the crontab file format, do "man 5 crontab".

This is so off-topic that I'm gonna AC this, but I couldn't let your diss of eXistenZ go unanswered.

Fight Club is a great movie. Good acting, good direction, but the relationship between Bonham Carter and Norton just is not believable. Bonham Carter is 10,000 times more sexually interesting than Norton. The whipped chick schtick feels forced but nowhere more glaringly than at the movie's end when they're up close against each other as the towers come crashing down. This alone kills the possibility of Fight Club being a great movie.

eXistenZ, contrary to your uninformed opinion, is an amazing movie. The movie's depiction of the topology between the actual world and the virtual world is one of the most subtle and haunting depictions of that relationship in cinematic history. Released at the same time as The Matrix (also a great movie, but whose lame ending merely nicks the movie's groundbreaking translation of John Woo), eXistenZ tells us more about the equivalence of the virtual and the actual than the Matrix could ever hope to do.

And finally, every self-respecting geek should know Repo Man. The Suicidal Tendencies, Iggy Pop, Emilio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton--not knowing about Repo Man is like not knowing about Buckaroo Banzai. Haven't heard of that one either? You might consider adding them to your Netflix queue because these movies are the purple Kool-Aid of the cult movie world.
