University of Twente NOC Destroyed
JanJoost writes "Around 08.00 CET today the University of Twente Network Operations Center, which amongst other things hosts a SURFnet PoP as well as security.debian.org and non-us.debian.org, caught fire.
The UT, which hosted the HAL in august last year is completely unreachable and is not likely to come back up any time soon. The fire department has given up every hope on protecting the server area and is now trying to protect the surrounding buildings.

Planet Internet and Twentsche Courant.
Pictures can be found here and here.
It's a shame to see a great infrastructure go down in flames like this."
Hey how about a link in English for those who are unfortunately unilingual?!?

that's what I call a flame war :-)
how come parent gets -1, but grandparent doesn't?
LIGHT MY FIRE! Yeeeeeah!
From unknown sources, the story has been spread around that security.debian.org 's Firewall is responsable for the fire. It's likely that the University will convert the Cisco 6509 switches to Extreme Black diamonds.
Additionally, a webcam detected a possible suspect.
I'm not a complete idiot... Some parts are missing.
Yeah! Never trust a hippie!
Nooo! it was'nt me it was the one armed man
try not to breed, please.
Many people think that the laws of karma means that you should be all good-hearted and giving, SO THAT YOU WILL GET GOOD KARMA.
;-)
Nothing is further from the truth: You can be bonded by good karma, as well as bad karma. The only difference is what will play out in your earth-life, good or bad events, which will rise and descend in your lives as long as you're bonded. If you have good karma, you will spend it on enjoyment and fashion
A real yogi is good-hearted and giving just because she can. She doesn't do it for any egoistic reason, but because she doesn't see the point in harming others or taking advantage of anybody or anything. Also, when you realize everybody is one, there is no point in doing anything that doesn't further the wholeness in existance. When everything is brought together, we're finally home and can rest.
Why this post? To raise awareness of the real beauty and wisdom behind words like 'karma', which is misunderstood by most people, even geeks.
It's when you think you understand and know something, you're really closed, even though you think you're learned. An ignorant person who is willing and capable of learning has more potential. Which is why we forget our past lives when we reincarnate, so we can start from semi-scratch (we're still influenced by past lives, conditioning and knowledge).
Knowledge != Facts. In fact many times, the more "facts" you gather, the less knowledge you possess. Facts are worthless alone.
You cannot have knowledge without wisdom.
You cannot have wisdom without experience.
If our schools and kindergarten taught knowledge and not facts, it would end much of the foolishness in this world.
Of course, the people benefiting from the foolishness don't want this.
YOU make up the difference in this world. It's time we wake up!
I know nothing of which I speak. It just comes out my mouth and you be the judge. I post anonymously, because I don't want to be bonded by any answers or moderation to this post.
Moderate this however you like, just remember you are the difference.

SURROGATE ACTIVITIES
38. But not every leisured aristocrat becomes bored and demoralized. For example, the emperor Hirohito, instead of sinking into decadent hedonism, devoted himself to marine biology, a field in which he became distinguished. When people do not have to exert themselves to satisfy their physical needs they often set up artificial goals for themselves. In many cases they then pursue these goals with the same energy and emotional involvement that they otherwise would have put into the search for physical necessities. Thus the aristocrats of the Roman Empire had their literary pretentions; many European aristocrats a few centuries ago invested tremendous time and energy in hunting, though they certainly didn't need the meat; other aristocracies have competed for status through elaborate displays of wealth; and a few aristocrats, like Hirohito, have turned to science.
39. We use the term "surrogate activity" to designate an activity that is directed toward an artificial goal that people set up for themselves merely in order to have some goal to work toward, or let us say, merely for the sake of the "fulfillment" that they get from pursuing the goal. Here is a rule of thumb for the identification of surrogate activities. Given a person who devotes much time and energy to the pursuit of goal X, ask yourself this: If he had to devote most of his time and energy to satisfying his biological needs, and if that effort required him to use his physical and mental facilities in a varied and interesting way, would he feel seriously deprived because he did not attain goal X? If the answer is no, then the person's pursuit of a goal X is a surrogate activity. Hirohito's studies in marine biology clearly constituted a surrogate activity, since it is pretty certain that if Hirohito had had to spend his time working at interesting non-scientific tasks in order to obtain the necessities of life, he would not have felt deprived because he didn't know all about the anatomy and life-cycles of marine animals. On the other hand the pursuit of sex and love (for example) is not a surrogate activity, because most people, even if their existence were otherwise satisfactory, would feel deprived if they passed their lives without ever having a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. (But pursuit of an excessive amount of sex, more than one really needs, can be a surrogate activity.)
