Linus Says Pre-2.6 is Coming
gomoX writes "As seen on C|Net , Linus has announced that the pre-2.6 series will be starting in early July. Despite not having been able to meet the release goal for 2.6 in June 2003, the next stable version is not as far away as you may think. You can take your guess based on the fact there was a 9 month period between first test version of 2.4 and the official release of 2.4.0 on January 2001."
Why is anyone using Linux when OS X 10.3 is coming out soon?
Wow...you guys are really off the ball nowadays. Used to be this is the stuff the editors concentrated on, now we get massive amounts of anti-microsoft, government-is-out-to-get-you stories.
Sad.
SIG:Slashdot: indymedia for nerds.
I applaud Linus' resilience in attempting to improve the kernel component of his application. But surely he must realize that the folks at Redmond have been able to fine-tune their award-winning operating system by releasing the much-touted Service Pack 4.
There are good days ahead of all us, unless we decide to await the uncertain release of kernel 2.6.
What do you think?
Dude, he said "guess". He didn't say "you can assume it will be out in exactly 9 months".
Looking for a fight or something? This is NOT Insightful you lazy mods.

It is official; CNET News.com confirms: Linux is dying One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Linux community when IDC confirmed that Linux market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent CNET News.com survey which plainly states that Linux has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Linux is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.
You don't need to be a Linus Torvalds to predict Linux's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Linux faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Linux because Linux is dying. Things are looking very bad for Linux. As many of us are already aware, Linux continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.
Red Hat is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time Red Hat developers the Red Hat developers only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: Red Hat is dying.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
Debian leader the Debian developers states that there are 7000 users of Debian. How many users of Mandrake are there? Let's see. The number of Debian versus Mandrake posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 Mandrake users. SuSE posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of Mandrake posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of SuSE. A recent article put Red Hat at about 80 percent of the Linux market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Red Hat users. This is consistent with the number of Red Hat Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, Red Hat went out of business and was taken over by Slashdot who sell another troubled OS. Now Slashdot is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major surveys show that Linux has steadily declined in market share. Linux is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Linux is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. Linux continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Linux is dead.
Fact: Linux is dying
Buy a Mac. Leave all this cryptic, underperforming crap to the losers without girlfriends. Get an Apple and be a real man for a change. Mac OS X, for those who feel the need for speed and power. Think Different. Think Apple.
Great! In ten more years it might catch up to FreeBSD.
