QExpo 2003 - Classic Quake Rebirthed
An anonymous reader writes "QExpo 2003 has opened its doors, and this week-long virtual fair is the center of activity for the classic Quake community. From July 5th to 12th, exhibitors will put new maps, mods and engine improvements on display for the online crowd. All work is based on the original Quake (Quake 1, NetQuake, QuakeWorld). Several competitions are scheduled throughout the week, including speed mapping, modding and running, and the expo builds on the experience of the successful 2001 event in a community which this year celebrates the 7th birthday of Quake."
I can't imagine many people still play Quake 1 except for on their low end PC devices (Pocket PC, Palm Pilot, etc) since "they can". The controls just aren't refined enough; you can't do the now-standard ASDW+mouse control.
The lowest I go in the series is Quake II. It is playable with the standard controls and still has a good following on the internet.
I would like to hear if anyone else shares my sentiments..
Never hit your grandmother with a shovel, for it leaves a bad impression on her mind...
Hey, im all about Quake, its one of my favs to play. But then again...it is 830 in the morning (atleast where i am) im sure all the Quake addicts are sleeping by now.
Still considered by many to be the best Quake mod, and which started the craze of all the team-based FPS's (whether commercial game or mods) played today. A small though dwindling number of people still play it today (with QuakeWorld), because of its arguably still-unrivalled gameplay. There are plenty of follow-ups, imitators, and newer/fancier/enhanced team-based FPS's, but there's something particularly refreshing about the original TF which I have yet to find beaten by any other game.

Is TTyQuake considered an improvement?
I live in Soviet Canuckistan you insensitive clod!
FWIW, this story is a subpage-only story - you have 'collapse sections' ticked in your preferences.
For those of you who are interested in picking up a game now and then, I highly recommend the ProQuake engine (GPL) and the CRMod++ DeathMatch competition framework.
These are modifications of NetQuake that were made to keep the original feel of Quake, with some minor improvements. None of the core of the game is changed with these packages. You can even connect to these machines with the original Quake client.

Using your sig line to advertise for friends is lame.

I'm the guy with the unpopular opinion
Actually there is still a very active European Quakeworld scene. There are a number of leagues and tournaments with participants from all over Europe.
The centre of this activity is focused around quakeworld.nu, give it a look.
