The English-speaking media had a lot of editorials on the issues (but no 6 O'clock news stories about it)
The French-speaking media has been *very* quiet on the issue: I saw a 2 article written in 3 months. At least in both cases they gave equal time to Micheal Geist and CMPAA / CRIA
Nobody around me seems to care about the issue... Yet it will have a lot of very real consequences on own you can use stuff you own.
The sad thing is: this law is presented has the one that will stop illegal downloading... It might give more power to copyright distributors, but it won't truly stop P2P and such...
yet, to give more power to these corporations (not even copyright holders, we are talking about copyright distributors), they have to take away mine: I won't be able to do whatever I want with the stuff I bough.
Whatever I try to bring up this issue around me, I'm getting labeled as a pirate who just wants everything free, yet, I have nothing to do with this sort of behavior. I just want to be a criminal for trying to copy music for a DRM-covered CD to my unlocked Nokia N95. I paid for the damn CD, and I paid for the damn unlocked phone. It this too much too ask?
My own MP (Liberal) told me that they will vote *for* it... but won't allow to go on without major changes...
They are not opposed to the bill itself , but how it's written.
All praise CBC/SRC (or BBC) that is giving us this type of information and never mentioned Britney or Paris Hilton or any other fast food news...
Seriously... Where else is there a good news source on IMPORTANT information?
Ever heard the joke about the phd professor who studied more and more about less and less, until he knew everything about nothing? Yea, many people would consider that professor an expert.
The Optimus Keyboard was featured on Slashdot a couple of times before. It's a keyboard with OLED screens for keys, making it possible to chnage the layout AND the look of the keys at will... Check:

I find it amusing how you said that, and were modded insightful. This requires serious lack of sarcasm in both you, and all the people that modded you.
That is the reason why OpenOffice.org support exporting to PDF. That is also the reason why you can print directly to PDF any unix flavor... or on Windows with GPL tools: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
I think you will find systems running IRIX/MIPS for years to come... We are still running stuff on HP-UX/HPPA here(and it's not like we don't want to move it elsewhere... we just can't...)

And what's more interesting is the Conservatives are gaining ground in Quebec (since they are supporting a more autonomous roll for that province... one thing I don't like about them... I like a strong central government)
While, I too, think that a stronger central governement would be more efficient, it would never work. I live in Montreal, and I would say that you have to live here (or anywhere in Quebec) to really understand what the whole independance mouvement is all about. The core PQ and BQ voter will probably never trust the federal gouvernement because they feel it's "foreign"...
The Conservative gained ground in Quebec because people wanted change. The Liberals were seen as corrupted, and the BQ as a "back seat" party. The only alternative was the PC. And if the PC wants to keep thoses seats, they will have to please Quebec voters...
So True. The REAL professionals on this matter are saying there is potential trouble. Their website might not be pretty, but the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society represent lot of individuals working with weather and/or climate information as a day-to-day job and/or research. (Members includes individuals from Envirronnement Canada, severals universities research departements as well the The Wheather Channel (itself, a corporate member))
Seagram's based in Montreal? I'm sure that's news to all the Seagram's employees that lost their jobs as they shut down Montreal operations.
The original Seagram company the the GP post spoke off is long gone. If my memory is correct, everything was either split off, sold or closed... try: http://www.seagram.com/ to see what's left of it...
... instead of writing, in Basic, a 64000 lines app that still runs today... and involves having an in-house team for maintenance... (that along with 10000 lines Cobol scripts that we don't have doc for...)
And btw, 10Mbps for $50 a month flat does look like a land of milk and honey to some of us
I can get something similar in Montreal... It's 65CAD = 59USD for 10Mbps Unlimited... Of course, that is only the Maximum connection... the actual speed may vary... and as everything else in North America, taxes are extra. So it's really 74CAD=67USD, which is not that far off
The whole point of 9/11 is the similarity between the date and the Emergency call system in North America... like 112 in europe, 999 in the U.K., 111 in NZ, etc...

I suddenly feel so old :(
I know the feeling. I work at a College, and most of the new students don't remember the Berlin Wall. Some were not even born when it fell.
I think a key issue to watch is going to be Rumsfeld. It's clear his strategies have failed, repeatedly; [...] He has to go.

What scares me the most is the fact that they even gave offshoring a consideration!!!
The DOD didn't do it themselves... they outsourced it to contractor 1 who outsourced part 1A and 3B to contractor 2 who outsourced it offshore.
The /. summary is misleading. A already-in-place moratorium just got extended...
For curiosity's sake, what happens if the numbers don't match or the seals appear to have been tampered with?
Simple: any tampered box is rejected.

Actualy, there is some truth to the grand-parent's statement about PDF. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pdf
If you stick to the subset of PDF that is an ISO standard and don't touch any Patent from Adobe, you can make a PDF generator (http://www.google.com/search?q=pdf+generator).

Just google for 'vcodec', you'll see this is just an old trojan renamed...
I too live in Montreal, and I still pay ~50Can$ for a 5M/800k dsl line... so the 30$ for 10M/2.5M is not available Canda-wide...

Altough, Bell started offering Fiber to the home in Montreal... it'a a bit pricey at 60$CAN per month, but it's fiber to the home at 10M/1M...
