John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Gets Game

An anonymous reader writes "Snake is back from the ashes, and this time it's gonna be a videogame made by Namco! It is based off the new comic book, and John Carpenter, Debra Hill and Kurt Russell all seem to be involved! 2005 is a long time to wait, but here's hoping it is better then Escape from LA." Another reader points out an MSNBC article discussing the resurgence of the un-Solid Escape From New York character, whose videogame adaptation looks to be courtesy Namco Hometek, US-based developers of Dead To Rights.

Escape from NY is one of those cheasy 80's movies that you can watch over and over. I love the style of the film. Almost every scene is dark, and the characters are all crazy and wierd. Cool music, too.

If you haven't seen it, you should.

Escape from LA.... well, can't blame them for trying to make some more cash. :)

Escape From NY is a real class act movie, like all of Carpenter's non-Halloween films. He has a really unique style - at first glance all his movies are cheesy, but they always have a little twist or something slightly unsettling about them. One of his signatures is having music running almost throughout the whole film. Check it out, see how much silence there is in his movies... And you never really notice, because he weaves the music in so well it's completely part of the atmosphere. I liken his movies to computer games - popcorn stories, but usually very immersive with music and action and "levels" and "bosses". It's amazing he started doing all this before computer games were really popular, and i think the industry owes him quite a bit of a debt. (And i don't just mean Midway for Mortal Kombat's Raiden ;-)

Snake is a great character for a video game. Plus the gadgets in the movies would also be good to develop. I wonder what engine this will use, but I'm guessing it'll be akin to the Doom 3 engine.

The character art looks pretty darn cool too. If they do this right, it could generate the kind of popularity Vice City did, yet with a Fallout flavour.

I was just thinking that. I dunno what's on your Nokia, but there was definitely an Escape From NY game made back in the 80s... But then, this was back when Frankie Goes To Hollywood had a game and all licenses were utter shite. I can't remember how you played it, exactly, but it was called Manhatten 1997 or something, and it had all these different windows where you controlled different characters... quite clever for the time, but still shite.

I certainly hope this won't stand in the way of that Star Wars or Lord of the Rings game that's due out soon. You know, the one that's due out soon? Where you do the stuff that's sort of related to the plot of the movie, but not quite? And you might see a polygonal version of one of the original characters who gets a twelve second vocal phoned in by the actor that played him? Yeah, that one! It's supposed to be AWESOME!

Nope i liked it too. Everyone took it too seriously. Escape From LA was a complete spoof of Escape From NY, not a sequel. It poked fun at itself, it paid homage to classic action (and surf!) movies, it had loads of in-jokes and gave a big wink to the whole Hollywood/movie industry. Mark my words, in 20 years people will look back at it and see it as the classic it is - the same way they did with Escape From NY, which wasn't highly regarded either when it came out.

I was never a big fan of, well John Carpenter in general. But his work does have a certain something that makes it memorable even when it isn't worth remembering. I find myself liking and at the same time loathing his films. He has a vision; he just doesn't seem to be able to translate it into film very well. (Sound like anyone else we know?)

In general, I agree, but The Thing is just brilliant. Moody, atmospheric, the people behave comprehensibly (including panicking in reasonable ways), a perfect music score, and the special effects hold up remarkably well even today.

And I love Big Trouble In Little China just because the 'hero' is so completely out of his depth. Nobody else would tell the story that way.
