Max Payne 2 Previewed
The first previews of Max Payne 2 have hit the web. GameSpot has their first look up. Additionally, the good folks over at GameSpy have their take on it up as well. The folks at Remedy and Rockstar describe the sequel as a "film noir love story," and as previously mentioned, Max will have a love interest this time around.
Another action movie/game ruined by a love story. who cares?
They ruined Max's Face. Noooooooo!
As long as the folks who made Kung-Fu mod can still work their magic, I'm in.
I assert that my comment is only my opinion, not that of any employer, past, present or future.
Of course, it won't be to my liking unless the lover in question dies. But I'm a sucker for the angst and the drama and such.
He looks like a suit to me, except he has replaced his papers with something more (or less) effective.
He had a love interest the first time around too. That turned out real well for her and her infant child.
I liked the first game, its one of the few games that was hyped more than the second coming of Jesus, and still delivered a solid and most of all enjoyable game. For this reason, I am looking forward to the sequel.
Perfect? no, of course not. But it was fun. It's one of the only 3rd person shooters that I have played that had solid controls and most of all, the aiming was good enough that you could actually hit your target. The Bullet time while definately a gimick, was a really good gimick. If you want to see just how good they implemented "bullet time" in Max Payne Play Dead To Rights sometime, and see how poorly Namco used it in their Max Payne Rip Off.
On Wall Street they say "buy low, sell high" On the pad we say, "buy high, sell high" Isn't that somehow better?
I am going to holdoff on getting all "giddy" over Max Payne 2. Please remember who is behind this whole thing: 3DRealms. When I actually can walk to the local best buy and see the game for sale, not pre order, I will be excited. We have had, over the past 5 years or so, a plethora or cool screenshots and wild game trailers from 3DRealms. Their other "oh my god", "I can't wait", "...going to revolutionize games", "WHEN ITS DONE" game is still being waited for.
I know that I sound cynical, but DNF has made me a bitter gamer.

The screen shots look good. I wonder if they are going to keep the bullet-time tricks in this one. In the first game it was innovative but to be honest I'm kind of tired of seeing it. Bringing a love interest into the mix isn't such a bad idea. Fans of noir know that you need a femme fatale to betray and save you. Does anyone else think the femme looks like Demi Moore though?
It would be nice when this is done to work soley on making an easy to use editor to make your own max maps. The last game you could actually watch someone else play and the "theater experiance" would be better then alot of current movies out there ("The One" comes to mind). Voice acting would be difficult (maybe some voice filters to clean up amerature attempts?). But imagine downloading a map with a game lifetime of 2 hours, and a decent plot (tv episode quality). You could actually play it and other people would be entertained just watching.
That second acid trip, I liked the first one, it added to the surrel edge that I loved about the game but the second time they used it (like 2 stages later) was going a bit to far.(though the self referential humor was classic) One of the few blemishes on an otherwise pristine work of art.
Max Payne's story ended. There is no room for a sequel. All they are doing anyway is recycling the few characters who survived. I really liked how Max Payne ended ambiguously. This new game destroys that. All they are doing is banking on the excelence of Max Payne. If I were them I would make a game of the same quality, but write a new story. They could even say "from the makers of Max Payne" on the box. Anything that doesn't ruin the ending of the original.
Help I'm a rock.
Not much was mentioned in the article and reviews about gameplay. They predominantly focused on the storyline, although important, is not the priority of most gamers. They revolutionized gaming with bullet time. For Max Payne 2 to be truly successful, they have to do more than add a romance to the story line. They must progress the gameplay in a new area. Bullettime is now almost 4 years old, having been replicated in several games (sadly Enter the Matrix).
"film noir love story"
I bet it will be a piece of crap.
In Soviet America the banks rob you!
God do I hope that they do NOT bring back the "follow the trail of blood while you are knocked out dream." Drove me freaking nuts and was really not much fun. I did like, however, the scene where you had to break out with nothing but a baseball bat and almost no health. Still not holding my breath though.

Anyone else notice how much Max looks like the guy that had the lead in the Resident Evil movie? Every time he came on the screen, my friends and I yelled "Max Payne!"
