Sony To Unveil PSX All-In-One Device Next Week
Thanks to Forbes/Reuters for the news that Sony will unveil its PS2-based, all-in-one PSX game device to the public next week. According to the article, "The PSX, which packs a TV tuner, DVD recorder, hard-disk drive, and the Playstation 2 game player into a single white box, will be unveiled at the CEATEC Japan 2003 industry show... near Tokyo, on Tuesday." Consumers may be seeing the PSX sooner, rather than later, since "Sony plans to launch the machine in Japan before the end of this year, and in Europe and the United States early next year", but unfortunately, "a spokesman for Sony said on Friday the exact launch timetable and pricing were yet to be decided."
That'll go good with all my white electronics... oh, wait.
Does it have a kitchen sink too?
Seriously, this is interesting, but I can't help but wonder if there's a future in such appliance-like combo devices. Unlike the honest-to-god simple game consoles, which survive through their software, these seem to go obsolete much quicker.
In Soviet Russia... RUSSIANS comment on YOU.
I hope it will sports some decent video outputs... a VGA out for instance.
til now I tried a quite vast amount of adapter and conventer to connect the PS2 with a beamer but I couldn't match the image quality of a DC+VGA adapter.
For instance, my DVD player has many more features that the PS2/X-box DVD players have. Not only that I have never had a problem with my DVD player but have had issues with both game consoles' DVD players.

But as previously said how will the features be. It seems with combo devices that all the functions are not as good as the devices separately.
Then again I trust most things that Sony comes out with. I really would not be surprised If all the features were up to par with a quality Sony DVD player, and of course sports all the features of the ps2 (minus the memory card slot).
All in all I already have a ps2 so its a waste of money to buy one in my situation. For all those people who don't have ps2`s yet and still want one (pretty unlikely), and have the extra bank to put up for it Id say go for it.
Now all they needed was to integrate a nice rf style wireless controller into the actual unit, so no one will have to deal with plugging the controller in the back of the unit. Which to me is the worst design flaw especially in tight spaces.
I mean, if its not going to be available until next year, who is going to buy a PS2 these days?
... its just like the short-lived days of MSX, oddly enough.

Hey Sony, you want to make this device really useful?
Give it a nice 16" LCD and a battery pack and put it in a laptop form factor. We can't carry our TV's everywhere. It would be great to have the choice, hook it up to a TV and have it "just work" or unhook it and raise the LCD and have it "just work".
-"Is that a laptop?"
-"No, it's the new PSX playstation from Sony. It's WONDERFUL! Virus free, hassle free, I can play games and watch and record DVD's anywhere. No drivers, no security updates, no crashes, no fuss. It just works. Boots up in 2 seconds too. I'm on my way to a PSX LAN party right now!
Operator, give me the number for 911!
It's been said already in previous discussions, but I still can't get over how stupid Sony is to name it the "PSX".
Playstation 1 was called PSX for short.
Playstation 2 was called PS2 for short.
The Playstation X is going to be called PSX for short.
And nobody saw this as a problem?
You're right, I wouldn't steal a car. But if it were possible, I sure as hell would download one!
If you plan on picking one of these up, plan on looking for some wireless controllers with it - the controller ports are (delightfully) in the back. This is a Good Thing. The device looks better (you don't have cables hanging off the front of your DVD player, do you?), and it encourages people to go for a more elegant solution. If only Sony had doen the first-party wireless thing. Oh well.

One of the advantages of the Xbox over the PS2. You can rip your own music onto the hard drive and any game that supports the feature lets you play your ripped music in-game.
