The only reason they said all that stuff is for a fallback excuse when they get beaten in the console war. Are they really trying to say that playing games on that machine is secondary... I find that quite apalling.
Why even bother with xbox live anymore with or w/o a modded xbox?
I perosnally have played xbox live quite a few times, as well as the free online supporters (xlink Kai, xbconnect). I have found the free ones to be quite nice, and on par with xbox live. If more people switched to free the experience would only get better.
I just dont see why pepople will pay for microsoft to screw them.
who really cares. If you got your xbox modded then you shouldnt be paying for online play anyway.
There are may programs that allow you to have the same great online gaming experience for free.
Much like the original halo, free online gaming is just a step away. I thank everyone who took the time to write/develope the programs. They should be commeded for what they have done for the "openbox" community
For everything they offer in the psp the battery life is sufficient for release. Yes the DS will have about 5x longer playtime... for now. If Nintendo made something with the same size screen/processing power then they would run into the same problem as would any company.
The 1 up that sony has is they have been making portable disc devices for quite some time now, and the battery life for most is nothing short of amazing (32 hrs off of 2xAA for cds.. not to mention the insane life MD players offer). There is obviously more to it than just cd player life. There is no doubt in my mind the sony engineers will come through in due time.
Eventhough their first revision of the psp wont last the longest, sony will live up to its name and manipulate the hardware to provide sufficient battery life for their product.
I think sony is making the correct steps to get this product out. The battery life althoguh short will most likely improve, and the price of the unit really is not that bad.
My question is... will ther be a region lock. The interview with Kawanishi-san makes me believe there will be region locks on all the systems. That really dissapoints me. If that is the case then I wont be playing any american games for this bad boy...
the question will it still have the sluggish mouse/crosshair resolution that has always plauged video games... or is it actually comparable to the pc?
But its definately not worth 30 dollars... for that price I will develope and make my own, and I bet i will still come out much cheaper even after 2 or 3 prototypes.
As we all know it would never be usable... Hell linux is almost too slow ( for m applications atleast) to run on an xbox... That is withouht the beatuiful ram upgrade to 128MB. Every xbox that does not run games needs the xtra ram.
This seems to be a nice chunk of hardware to develop applications on. The 802.11 provides for easier connectivity, and the two ARM processors could provide quite some power for a handheld. Just look back at the original psone, and N64 specs. It looks good when comparing them on paper. Even though this is just speculation at this point.
psone CPU 32-bit CPU Speed 33.8688... MHz RAM 2 MB Video RAM 1 MB
n64 Processors: CPU: 64 bit Risc CPU Speed, (R4300I series) 93.75 MHz Graphics CPU 64-bit MIPS Risc Co-processor 62.5 MHz Memory: 4.5 MB Rambus DRAM Custom 9-bit Rambus Bus (to the DRAM)
That seems to be the same situation for some, and not a problem for others.
I have many games (some unplayed ) and i just dont have the desire to pick up the controller. The last time I played a game was a bout 2 to 3 months ago.
Then again I have 2 pre- orders out (ninja gaiden ffx2 international. But even so it will Probablly take untill summer to beat them. Assuming Ninja gaiden will ever be released.
As a big Castlevania fan, I had always hoped for a ps2 version. It would be nice to have something like Contra - Shattered Soldiers, a 2D side scroll with 3D like characters and environments.
When I heard it was going to be 3D I too had my doubts (and still will until I pick it up this morning). But I am willing to give it a try. Considering Konami producer Koji Igarash had his hand in it.
I think it will live up to one of the best 3D action games on the ps2, but it will be a bit tougher to live up to the Castlevania name, especially with the new GBA versions. Hell it already has Japanese voices which is a good first step in my book. Then again I think all Japanese originated games should have the original Japanese audio.
So how would you get the video into the xbox? Yes, The pvr programs are already there. I also agree that the dreamix is vaproware, but at the same time its a good project for a student like me to work on.
From a hardware standpoint the video-in is the one big obstacle that needs to be taken care of (unless there is something obvious I am missing). That alone is what interests me.
Since the xbox is a video game system it is only made with the vid out, but at the same time it has the Network card, which I will hope to utalize to get the video in.
Then again I could just be taking out my ass. Who knows... Any suggestions anyone??
Nobody believed me when I told them it would be the best system ever. Of course I never meant for playing games.
I forshadowed (along with most other slashdotters) that 6 to 9 months after the release of the xbox the first crack would be discovered (although I do not know if it held true). But in a result of microsoft`s gaming box all the Linux junkies, like me, now have an extremely cheap computer that can be plugged into any tv.
Now all microsoft needs to do is drop the price, like The Gamecube. down to 100 and I will buy 3.
Did I mention that for the most part xbox games suck. They seem to go with the whole graphisc focus and loose all gameplay (with expections of course). If i wanna play games thats what my ps2/gc/saturn.. etc are for.
I give mad props and thanx to the xbox linux project (and all others who were able to sacrifice time to this cause). Withough them I could not say that a microsoft product has made me happy.
Now I just need to go work on my xbox pvr project...I know there is already one (http://www.dreamix.tv/) but will be "for sale" I want open source/open shematics dammit.
Now thats a great Idea. I would love to have my ps2/tivo/dvd player on the go. Expecially for thoes long 12 hr flights to Japan. Then the only problem would be a sutible battery life.
But as previously said how will the features be. It seems with combo devices that all the functions are not as good as the devices separately.
Then again I trust most things that Sony comes out with. I really would not be surprised If all the features were up to par with a quality Sony DVD player, and of course sports all the features of the ps2 (minus the memory card slot).
All in all I already have a ps2 so its a waste of money to buy one in my situation. For all those people who don't have ps2`s yet and still want one (pretty unlikely), and have the extra bank to put up for it Id say go for it.
Now all they needed was to integrate a nice rf style wireless controller into the actual unit, so no one will have to deal with plugging the controller in the back of the unit. Which to me is the worst design flaw especially in tight spaces.
Games may be a waste of time to you but there are plenty of people who play them. Most don't play them all the time. There are plenty of people, students or not, who can play within moderation.
Is it really that different from watching a movie, or that hour or two spent watching tv. I prefer a good 20 or 30 min puzzle game (Bombastic) in between hours of studying. It gives the brain a good rest as supposed to "an utter waste of time".
Or what about a good game to go on trips. It is just another use of time for some entertainment, much like when you read a good book.
all 3 of my roomemates play it and I have to say.. I think I would rather have them be crack heads. All lives they once had are now brushed aside for this game, and as for school work lets just say they are on the 8 year bachelors plan at the moment.
I dont know if its just me or do most people (students) who play this game have priority issures.
In America the Japanese games seem to be becoming less popular, but it makes sense. Americans and Japanese are very different from each other. So now that the American game developers are developing better games which "all Americans" seem to like, the Japanese games just kind of seem to fizzle out and die.
Then again from my experience Americans don't seem to like puzzle games, and other such games that merit better game play over graphics. Don't get me wrong people. I know there are plenty of great American games which boast great game play and graphics, but in all honesty it cant be compared to the Japanese games that we will never see on our shores.
Obviously they play to the crowd, and for the most part the Japanese and Americans are two totally different crowds. So if you want to play the good Japanese games you should better learn Japanese, or be content with the violence that most American companies bring to the market.
I personally feel that Japanese games are better, but that just might be because i grow tired of FPS`s, and the stories to games like KOTOR just aren't nearly as good as the crack headed stories of RPGs like the FF series, or even MGSD. Then again I have always been about Japanese culture ever since I can remember, and with it games. So in short I am pretty damn biased.
Its a bit too expensive and impractical to do. I like the idea of it and I give props to the people who took the time to do a bit of reverse engineering. Ill probably end up doing the controller part of it in my spare time for fun, but the screen is just not worth it.
I was hoping somebody figured out how to get a neogeo pocket D pad on there cuz that would be amazing. I have yet to come across a better hand held controller.
For the most part ive noticed that Japanese games are quite a bit harder than the American counterpart. For example soul calibur 2 (GC). Many of the weapon mode challanges are quite a bit tougher with shorter times to beat stages, and harder battles than the equivalent american game. Not to mention an extra subchapter. Also Zelda TWW (kaze no takuto) is also quite a bit harder when trying to find the triforce shards. Im sure with enough though more could be thought of.
wasnt the dreamcast US released on 9.9.1999?
Which by my calcualtions makes it only 6 years old.
The only reason they said all that stuff is for a fallback excuse when they get beaten in the console war. Are they really trying to say that playing games on that machine is secondary... I find that quite apalling.
I would rathar flip a coin than heed to anything that comes from G4... expecially X-play
Where is the love for the free online gaming?
