I would imagine the the royalties Ms. Keating would receive from the radio would be far less than what she's getting now from sites like Pandora. In fact, as an "avant cello" musician it's probably right around $0.00. I think she should be thrilled that people have heard her music 1.5 million times. How many of those 1.5 million listens then went on to buy her music? I don't know the music industry all that well but I would think far more money is actually made from album sales rather than radio plays. Radio/streaming is a way to advertise yourself to get people in to buy your product.
Contrary to previous plans to keep it all in a massive database, it will now let ISPs and telecoms firms store the data themselves, and access it when it feels it needs it."
The way I'm reading it is that the Brit govt. realized how expensive keeping all the records would be and decided to make the ISPs and mobile phone companies take the bill. That of course will be passed down to the users.
I'm currently stationed overseas and have an APO mailing address. I do a lot of my shopping via the Internet. I'm highly curious to see how these proposed changes will affect myself and all other overseas military members. These changes would definitely affect my shopping habits as I would probably just special order through the Base Exchange for certain items and wait the extra time, not paying sales taxes.
As an Airman on active duty who has been to Iraq I want to thank many of you from the bottom of my heart. You clearly believe that every last service member is a blood crazed, baby killing monster. You think that we wake up every morning Hell-bent on going out and killing as many civilians as we can. We don't even shoot at insurgents. If given the choice between taking out someone shooting an AK-74 at us or hitting their granny, we're taking the old lady out. Give me a fucking break!
Thank you for honoring (not at all) the sacrifice of over 5000 men and women. Thank God I know there are many out there who truly do appreciate what we do and what we sacrifice for you all to pretend to know what happened in Fallujah. Were you there? No... well then you have no fucking right to say how it was a massacre of epic proportions, pure genocide, or the next holocaust. I have so much respect for those who do go into combat and risk their lives daily. I could never do what the soldiers and Marines do daily over there. I am so thankful for them because I don't have to. And guess what, because of them you don't either.
I have been coming to Slashdot for years now because I enjoy a level of intelligence that isn't found on many other websites on the Internet. Clearly that intelligence has fled from this particular discussion. Mod me troll because that's 100% what it is. But I couldn't sit back and watch as every service member serving and who has served was demonized by people who don't even truly know what they are talking about.
I'm a net admin/computer guy (3C0) in the AF and would definitely like the opportunity to work in the Cyber Command. For the most part civilians are taking my traditional job of network administration away from more and I'm being put into less desirable positions like Combat Communications. The chance to get away from TDC equipment and back into a more techie/nerdy position would definitely make me happy. I just hope they don't give all the good slots to civilians.
Blizzard has introduced a lot of extra content, bug fixes, buffs/nerfs, and many other tid-bits of digital gooodness through periodic patches over the years. So while I'm not a huge fan of paying a monthly fees it isn't all for not. And still... for what I pay to play it's money well spent.
It costs me about $20 a week for league bowling (nerd alert!). So I spend more in one night than I do for a month of WoW. As far as hobbies/habits/addictions go, WoW is far-far-far from the most expensive.
I'm a net admin in the Air Force currently deployed to Baghdad. Here on base we have various models of the Panasonic Toughbook and the Itronix.
When I first got here someone who worked flight line brought in an Panasonic that had fallout out of an airborn helicopter and onto the tarmac. It was all dented up and I could actually see the internal components. I plugged it in and the damn thing powered right up! I was shocked because this thing was beat up.
Oh Itronix... we seriously thought these things were made here in Iraq. What hunks of crap! I've had my share of experiences with them, all bad. They are slow, buggy, bulky, ugly... If price is not an issue definitely go with the Panasonic over Itronix. If I ever get a choice, I choose Panasonic over Itronix.
This is not my first deployment and I hope it will be my last.
I previewed and re-read this three times before posting and somehow missed this. I meant to say, "This is not my first deployment and I hope it will NOT be my last."
General Lord...
I'm an active duty 3C0 assigned to a Combat Comm unit. I've been following the upcoming changes to my career field and the stand up of AFCYBER closely as they both potentially affect my AF career.
My question, will there be a necessity for Airmen to be stationed in the AOR as part of an AEF rotation to complete the mission or will the majority of the work be able to be completed from home station?
AEF rotations are part of life in the Air Force. I am currently deployed to Iraq as part of an AEF rotation and am proud to be doing my part. This is not my first deployment and I hope it will be my last. However, being able to stay at home with my family yet still play a roll in the AF mission would be preferable to myself and I'm sure many other Airmen. With rumors of 6 month AEF rotations coming in the near future being spread more and more often, a chance to spend more time with our families sounds like a good thing.
Thank you for taking time to answer our questions.
I own a 360, I don't feel it's obsolete. I bought it to play games, not watch movies. I don't own a HD-DVD add-on and never planned on buying one. If I did own a PS3 I doubt I'd own Blu movies. I buy game consoles to play games, not watch movies.
Why is it so hard for people to grasp this simple concept? My Wii doesn't play movies at all and yet it still sells well. If people really cared that much then I would say that yes Microsoft is in trouble. But no, you can't say that this is a nail in the coffin of the 360.
It's overpriced you say, I never would have expected that from Alienware.
I've always found them to be overpriced compared to other, lesser known vendors or even just making it yourself. I guess if you want to brag to your friends "I have an Alienware!" and they all gasp in awe then it's worth the extra money but I think most people could care less.
Someone in Germany actually bought a 360??? I've been into the local stores (Karstadt, Toys R Us, etc.) in my area and it looks like they're collecting dust. Even at my local BX (Base Exchange) they aren't selling 360s all that fast. I figured they'd have sold out in no time but it's the opposite actually. So even Americans living in Germany don't want to buy the thing.
A month or so ago when they hit the news was the the first time I'd heard of allofmp3.com and since then I've spent at least $100 there. Before that... I probably hadn't spent $100 on music in the last three years. And I wouldn't have purchased any of the music I did if it weren't for the website.
I could go out and download it all for free but I'm lazy and it can be a hassle to find good quality mp3s, not to mention a whole CDs worth. Allofmp3.com has it all right there for a really great price.
If it weren't for the RIAA/BPI and all going after the site I'd never have found it. They sure are doing a great job of stopping piracy. If they never made such a stink over it I doubt they'd be getting as much business as they are now. Oh well... their loss, my gain.
Holy crap was this a game bad. So, so bad. I wanted to beat my friend for making me spend 5 minutes playing this game. I cannot believe that they didn't put it on the list

... I wonder if Peter Jackson is available. At least he did a fairly decent job with the LOTR movies. I'm sure he wouldn't butcher the WoW universe too bad. Of course if the writing and plot blow that won't help things at all.
Hell, even the censoring of certain websites (rotten.com, ebaumsworld.com, and theonion.com are the only ones I can recall, but it's been a few years) was easy to circumvent for anyone clever enough to uncheck the "Proxy Server" setting in IE. I wonder if anyone ever bothered fixing that?
I'm Comm in the Air Force, posting from a govt computer right now at work. Wonder no more, they did fix that. However there are plenty of proxy websites out there that let me surf all those sites that are blocked by our firewall. Mostly I use it to go to the WoW related sites actually. I'm an addict, what can I say.
Actually for a time/. was blocked by our firewall. However I work Network Administration and one of the other sections within Net Admin controls what is and isn't blocked. I managed to convince them that/. is a vital news site and that it helps me in my job. Suckers.
I saw this in Japanese and was just blown away by it. I never played FFVII so was a little lost in the story but the visuals of the movie more than made up for it. It was just so... amazing. I can't wait to be able to see this on the big screen.
What? Multi-disc? Are you crazy? Then I'd actually have to stand up, move from the couch to the cabinet, pull out the new disk, bend down and swap disks, put the old disk back in it's case, walk back over to the couch and sit back down. That'd take maybe 5 minutes total with load times and require minimal exercise.
No, multi-disc is no way to go. I want to be able to sit on my couch for no less than 30 hours without moving an inch.
It may be harsh but employees working on military networks should be aware that no unauthorised software should be loaded in any form because you just don't know what payload it may carry.
Yes, we do know that we shouldn't be putting unauthorized software on the network. We go through training about it and are reminded from time to time. But it happens all the time anyway.
But then again, with this rootkit even if you clicked on disagree it would install on your computer. So Mr. Airman goes to listen to his new CD on his computer at work (which is okay) and before you know it rootkit on the computer.

It is a bit poorly worded. I had to go back and read it a couple times. 500 readers have left messages since her death.

You made a mistake... Yankees fans should be first on that list.
Mets are by far the better NY team. B-Mets home-opener day is tomorrow! Too bad I'm not in Bingo to go cheer them on.

Lets flip that around a bit. My WoW hobby doesn't leave crap scattered all over the house and piling up in a closet somewhere.

From TFA: "We have been producing our episodes in this fashion for years, routinely finishing within 12 hours of the episode going on the air."
So yes, that is usual for a South Park episode.
... don't buy it and just let it sit there on the store shelves collecting dust. Taking this approach also saves you $600.
