Silicon Artwork
TeachingMachines writes "Photomicrographs are photographs taken through a microscope. A site called Molecular Expressions hosts a vast collection of photomicrographs, arranged in galleries. One gallery of interest is called the Silicon Zoo. While using a microscope to examine the silicon surfaces of processors and whatnot, investigators stumbled upon some renaissance artwork, dire warnings, and even some advertising that may be etched into your computer's silicon. Douglas Adams would have been happy to find this one. (from the Silicon Scriptures collection). This "EULA" probably has lawyers jumping for joy. An image on this page will give you a rough idea of how big the artwork actually is."
New Total Information Awareness chip?
~ Whence do you come, slayer of men, or where are you going, conqueror of space?
Yes...
I wonder if current systems have a similar EULA?

I've seen this sort of thing before, you'd be amazed what you can find. I even once saw a drawing of Dilbert on one. It was quite good, actually.

I'm out of my tree just now but please feel free to leave a banana.
those are from the days when chips had 1 or 2 layers of metal on them. These days it's more normal to put power and ground planes on the top hiding all the pretty stuff underneath
Was all of that written on a chip too?
Any suitable mirrors up yet? I got to see one picture of Milhouse and now the server is smoking.

Uh-oh, looks like the Los Alamos NHMFL at FSU has been taken down... is that considered an act of terrorism?!?
I prefer my 'artwork' to be natural, not silicon enhanced.
I don't have a sig...Do you??

No, wait, the other thing - tedious.

I prefer my artwork to be of Silicone, rather than Silicon. First of all, you don't need a microscope to appreciate it. Secondly, depending on where you live, you can appreciate it freely (and possibly even openly) on the beach or even in a gentleman's club up-close!

This is slashdot. We don't RTFA here, we just look at the pretty pictures.
When you look at the pictures, it appears that there are no images on the silicon, but after seeing it about 15 times this morning, it looks like that the pictures are there. Initially, I was like "what a dumbass", but now, no matter what is on there, it's done.
This poor silicon is never gonna live this one down.
It's hard to believe that's how Micronians are made. Why don't we see it right now by having you both kiss one another?
SCOX is up 32% today but, my shares are up 500%.
Yeah Baby, yeah.
What if the child doesn't want to go with the traditional way? I don't like forced beliefs. I also don't like artificial segregation. Looks like you're arguing for a Taliban style return to a past that probably never really existed.

Last night. But isn't this about the 8th time this has been posted on slashdot? Oh well some people might have missed it. The coolest thing is when the guy who does the site contacted SGI and asked if they'd put the Florida State Seminoles logo on one of their CPU's and they did!
...many years ago...

The mirror mostly works. Some of the images are broken.
The best chip "easter egg" I've seen was on the Intel P3 die which said something like "Microsoft Sucks" on it. The engineer responsible was fired if I remember correctly.
When all else fails, run.
Reminds me of those Intel engineers who got canned for putting bill sux on the Pentium microchip. ;)

I saw the story and though - that's a dupe! After searching back 3 years I was convinced that I saw it elsewhere. I stand corrected.
I only just realized that I have been visiting Slashdot for over five years now.

A couple of years ago I remember I found an article about artwork being part of the manufacturing process for Irix processors.
:-)
They stopped doing it because it was not economically advantageous, however.
I stripped the CPUs out of two Indies I had back then to have my own micro digital art collection

that link should still work. at least until a million of you all hit it. oh well, props to the first 1,000.
Strange, I cannot find any reference to it. CNN, CBC, and BBC are all saying he's due to re-enter in a few hours.
I thought I had read a post about this in the distant past. Of course, I had better thngs to do than to track down the actual post ;-) So although I am an obsessive, whiny nerd I must have more of a life than you, otter.
JK of course.

Have mercy, this poor server is a little Wintel box running IIS 5 on Win2k!
I'm on FSU's campus in my office and through our LAN can't BARELY even reach the poor piece of fried silicon art we're creating on that machine right now! Perhaps they'll scan the smoldering processor from that box soon and show us a big /. image etched right on it ;)

I'm from the "Dime Generation" myself.
On the other hand I also remember what we got payed in those days. Comes to about the same thing; and we didn't have 2 litre bottles for a buck.
You had to pull the bottle out of the machine just right too, or you lost your dime. I always hated that. Or the cup machines, you had to watch to make sure the cup came down properly or you just watched your soda spray all over the place.
Ah the good old days, immortalized in invisible etchings.

I was hoping to see a bunch of bare breasted/augmented nudies. darn silicon.
OK: I got a few of the images. They're on my website. If you have missing images, or mirrors of your own, post in reply, or email to me, and I'll put pictures or pointers as appropriate on my page.

When my dad was getting his PhD at VA Tech (he finished up in '91 or '92 I think), one of the guys in his lab group was Bill Bender. I don't recall exactly what his field of expertise was, but I think it involved lasers. And apparently also making his own circuits. He had a maginified pic of one up at his desk and his "signature" mark on them was a bicycle. He was big into triathlons, so the bike was a reference to that I suppose.
IIRC, one of my favorite books, Acts of the Apostles also references the concept that there is usually some sort of artwork on chips, put there by the designers.
There are some odd things afoot now, in the Villa Straylight.
My first time as a karma whore... here's a link you can click on:

I actually used to work with some of these folks. We used to see all sorts of cool stuff.

The picuture of Dilbert is included in the second image gallery from Chipworks silicon art. It also shows up on an ICE poster
Signatures are a waste of bandwi (buffering...)
A friend of mine engraved a proposal to his (now wife) on a microchip he was fabricating. I'll try to get permission to post the micrograph.
A perfect example of an awful website. All I wanted to do was see some pictures of the insides of chips. Will they let me do that? Nooooo... Gotta hunt and claw around.
I gave up in frustration. Ergo, the website is a failure.
What kills me is how they blur out the pussy. I'm gonna be ill for a while about the rest, though.
Look at the second last line of this close-up.
It reads, "Unix is a regist". SCO Lawyers should be very busy trying to read this!
I worked for Mike Davidson last year.
Mike Davidson is a great researcher much the same way Adolf Hitler was a great public speaker.
His burn threw rate on employees is greater then fast food restaurants.
He intimidates and underpays all his employees.
You get no time off.
If you are sick he may threaten to fire you. you are classified OPS so no job protection or health/benefits of any kind.
He expects you to work on national holidays if you chose not to he threatens to fire you.
(oddly this is a double standard I heard that he made his graphic designers show up on New-years day. Locked out of the building like sheep they stood outside for fear that they may lose their jobs for 2 hours waiting for Mike to show up. Did he show up? No! Did the designers get paid for wasting their day? No!)
Almost every one at the Mag lab (nick name for the NHMFL) resents him.
He may also be a raciest? I heard 2ed hand that at a party he got a little drunk and let it slip that "his uncle would kill him if he were alive to see him hire a niger"
He uses Nikon Microscopes on Olympus research projects and vice versa.
If you live in Tallahassee you can see him and his back stabbing do-boy Eric standing in front of the Mag lab every morning around 8:30 am
He is always hiring so if you plain on working for him. Be warned, he never delivers on what he promises, and after a while the blinds on the windows start to look like prison bars.
I'm not trying to be a troll
I'm just letting the truth be known to the world.
The silicon zoo page is so old and busted.
Here's a dose of new hotness: Chipworks
How these guys can reverse engineer in the day of DCMA astounds me. Speaking of greyscale images are interesting.. And I'll hint people towards looking at a Transmeta chip.
You do understand that these images are copyright them, and they explicitly say not to mirror them?
I hereby place the above post in the public domain.
Personally, i was more interested in this regarding the art aspect. Quickly, i was disappointed. It's low quality. Very low quality. And those at Windows (bmp) or Macintosh (jpeg) background sections aren't as beautiful.
;) just look a bit futher on the site ehehe
For those who are interested into this from a (psycheledic) art perspective, i can recommend this site

Or, you experience psycheledic art yourself
Yes, the artwork is great but their stories about the artwork are not necessarily accurate to any degree. And they apparently ignore any comments and corrections sent them about their stories.
Sure, look at the pretty pictures but don't believe the stories with them are all true.
Ok I work for Mike Davidson and I'm not going to argue with the fact that he is a hard ass and can be a complete dick more times than not, but there was always one little wang-less gay jerk who always put him in a bad mood because as a graphic designer Mike had to fight him tooth and nail to get a graphic out of him that usually looked like dog shit melting on the sidewalk, Yes for those of you that know him I'm talking about that little ass hole Dan Parsons. And what ever Dan is up to now is generally a mystery to us because no one at the NHMFL ever cared enough to keep up with his whiney ass. But it seems from the post we read here he managed to survive. So tell me Dan are you still walking around in that little cloud of marijuana smoke you used to be in or have you upgraded to a real drug? You know I'm really curious if you made that whole speech up or just ripped off another song? Its funny you didn't have any balls when you worked here and you still don't because for someone who "questions authority" you sure as hell have a hard time saying this stuff to Mike Davidson's face. No one likes you and no one obviously cares for your opinion, especially the opinion of someone who quits, comes back begging for there job and then quits again because he can't deal with his boss. Cry me a river you little wang-less gay jerk.
