Yeah, I was kind of limiting my thinking to the electronic realm, but you are right of course. D&D started it all. Interesting to read about some of the mail based games that people have written about below. Never had the patience for that sort of thing, and I didn't think I would have the self control to handle any of the slick graphical based MMO's. So I have been MMO "sober" for at least ten years.
Exactly! I always thought of MUD's as the very first MMOs with UO and Everquest simply being graphical MUD's. But perhaps there was something even before the MUD's and MOO's that I am unaware of.
I use to have a serious addiction to a MUD called Phantazm. I still remember the sound of my modem connecting in and then connecting to Phantazm via telnet. I swear to god it was like a rush of heroin. Those were the days.
I like the idea of your on screen char mimic your own movements. But there are hundreds of interactions that involve a specific command beyond run, jump, punch, etc. I must be missing something but how are those commands execured with Natal.
I wish I could mod this up. Even though I think the op was obviously trolling. No one can be that stupid. It is unreasonable punishment, plain and simple, and proof that our justice system is for sale to the highest bidder.
While true that muscle burns more calories at rest and that a more heavier, more muscular person needs more calories than a lighter, thinner person I think most slashdotters are overestimating the effects. I mean the little hulk kid is growing too. All toddlers eat like little monsters. Anyway, a pound of muscle at rest burns 35 to 50 calories a day, so up to 500 calories for ten pounds of new muscle per day. So lets do some quick math. The average American male is made up of about 42% skeletal muscle, which at 185 lbs that is roughly 75 pounds of muscle. If you increase the muscle mass by 40% (Yes, I RTFA) that is about 30 lbs of new muscle. Pretty awesome when you think about it, but that still only burns an extra 1500 calories a day max. Most Americans overeat that amount anyway. I don't think anyone would be starving, they would just be harder and fitter. A big mac has over 500 calories to put that into perspective.
I think a more interesting question is what do you do if this is readily available, cheap and easy to use? Would you do it? What if you are an active amateur cyclist working your way up the local ranks? They guys are gonna love you coming in with your extra 30 lbs of muscle and storm by them up the local hill. Do we start over with all the record books? This isn't exactly roids but it isn't exactly a tough training plan that you earned your fitness with either.
Do what I do. Bring a workout bag and run or crossfit during your lunch hour. Find a shower in your building or nearby and use it. Or use wet paper towels. Don't laugh it works. Eat your lunch back at your workstation after you workout. I was in a similar situation to you about two years ago and was slowly turning into a slug. I made friends with some one in the building who ran every day rain, snow, or shine. I hurt for about two months but it got better.
Wait, you say you don't have a lunch hour, work in a city can't run, or a myriad of other excuses. It's all B.S. and I used them all too. If you are working 60 hours a week and being productive you get at least an hour break in there unless you work in a gulag.
It's worth it, and life is short. I wouldn't trade the fitness I have earned for just about anything.
I think you may be trolling here but I guess I will bite.
I actually live right off the Seward highway and was returning home from a fishing trip when this very accident occurred. I was stuck at a standstill with 10,000 of my closest friends for about 45 minutes.
During the summer this road is the main artery from Anchorage (pop. about 300k) and the Kenai Peninsula (where all the fun is). This narrow winding road is literally glutted with motorhomes, trucks towing large boats, and rental cars on weekends. Often it is moose that cause accidents on this road but more often it is people drifting over the center line. If this guy was watching a movie he deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
This post reminded me of an excellent book I read on the subject by Joseph Hallinan called Going Up the River : Travels in a Prison Nation. A great muckraking book that is both mind boggling and just down right depressing. If you are interested in this I highly recommend it.

Don't want to sound like too much of a scoundrel but there is no point in self deception. I find myself reading this and thinking "Where's my cut?" IF all of this actually happens it appears that my real estate investments are worth exactly the land they sit on and nothing else. Retirement accounts? Scrap paper. This seems to be one of the things that makes a few companies extremely rich and everyone else equally at the survival level.
Where should one invest with nanotech coming? Even on the outside predictions I will be alive when this happens.
I posted a similar request the other day when we were discussing how Sun EOL'd the last of the Cobalt products. No one responded but I did find this alternative on my own. It looks promising but I have no direct experience with them yet.
With the exception of building out a linux box and manually configuring the myriad of services that are integrated into a Qube does anyone know of some good, simple to use, alternatives to the Qube 3? I have one of these in a small business now and would like to swap it out for something better but I am having a hard time finding something that would work. Any leads?
I would really like to agree with you but I am just too cynical. I think we will have candidates who will campaign against these greivous affronts to our liberties to get in office and then forget all those campaign promises and use the new laws as shamelessly as the current administration. Don't you think the same money will be paying off the new people just as well as the old?
Plus I am not so sure the current administration will get voted out. The economy is getting stronger and if jobs start returning that will be more than enough to get bush the votes he needs even if the cognescenti realize how little affect the president has on the economy.
I am really getting discouraged about the changes I see in the US. Not just this but corporate control and special intrests steering the country. I think all these slashdotters posting about emmigration may be on to something.
Is there anyone here with a good enough grasp of history to give us some perspective on this? Seriously, are we headiing toward a revolution or will this blow over?
I lived in rural Alaska (the bush) for almost ten years; up until I graduated from high school. I can tell you this would be a godsend for many villages. The diesel generators typically in use are notoriously unreliable and provide dirty power on the off chance they are actually operating. Plus fuel costs are so ridiculous due to the fact that it has to be barged in from Seattle or Anchorage and then only in the summer when there is open water. My only concern is who is going to maintain something like this? I mean the average rural Alaskan is amazingly self reliant and can work on a diesel engine by the time they are out of high school but not many have this kind of expertise. I doubt Toshiba is going to pay a tech to live in Galena year round. After thinking about it, I think this would just add more cost to already impoverished villages because they would have to maintain a redundant diesel system. Sure would be cool though.

I thought I had read a post about this in the distant past. Of course, I had better thngs to do than to track down the actual post;-) So although I am an obsessive, whiny nerd I must have more of a life than you, otter.
I actually did this for my undergrad research project and it really isn't so bad. The little guillotine used to "sacrifice" the rats was actually a pretty clever piece of engineering and as long as you had the stump pointed in the right direction it wasn't even very messy. Of course I was working with senescent (old) rats so they didn't have a lot of fight left in them.
With all of the rumors swirling around the qube websites that Sun is EOL'ing them in July of this year I thought these 1U servers would be great replacements for a qube. Alas, it looks like these new servers were designed for a completely different purpose. And before any of you scoff at the underpowered little qubes keep in mind they are serve their purpose admirably and I am sorry that Sun is abandoning them.
In response to the idea that breast fed babies are smarter; it is a fairly well understood fact that breast fed babies have an average 10+ IQ advantage over their formula fed peers. One of the factors are more omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA) that are essential for neural and optical development. You don't have to take my word for it though. A quick pubmed search would bring up tons of journal articles supporting my position.
my alma matter *spits on ground* We had to go to sex ed seminars where former students (now in what appeared to be sexless marriages) told us to "save" ourselves. I mean we were 20 year olds for Christ's sake! Instead of practical, realistic discussion we were exhorted never to get "horizontal" or go on non group dates. It just seemed so pathetic and stupid. And judging by my peer's pregnancy rates woefully ineffective. I think schemes like the one shown here will be just about as effective.
Sorry about the rant. I guess I was just commiserating with you.
Exactly! I agree completely with this. Although anarchy follows close behind.

Arstechnica.com covered this same study the other day. Their writeup is better than mine would be so why don't you read their article? http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/03/does-high-fructose-corn-syrup-make-you-fatter.ars
The abridged version of the abridged version is that this study does not conclusively prove much of anything.

third post?!
I am curious to find which one of us reading this has the lowest account number? I had a really low one but lost that account..

0 down 5 up! On a T1! A few minutes ago it was doing much better but right now this kind of sucks

Your point about being modded up to 4 completely nullifies my reply. We both know /. moderators are always right. I stand corrected. ;-)
