It would be nice to see movements like these from other countries as well. Although it is going quite well.US, EU, China,
LEts go for a more secure citizen database!
I wonder if the art of bioscience will take the same road as Open source and proprietary source code.
Vaccines that you pay for and vaccines that are Open Source and free of charge. And good thing is that Open source sometime does better job than proprietary code.
Open Source software just has the genes to evolve better. Thus making more robust and open standard compliant products.
But hey, these developers should make a leaving as well. Especially now that Linux is taking off as a server platform used by many big Companies.
The issue here Mr. Microsoft is not free but open source and better quality.
I would not mind paying for Open Source quality software but paying for proprietary crap software it really takes the piss of the consumer space .
Microsoft have managed with the power of marketing and the public's lack of knowledge on computer science to make them buy crap software and at the same time being happy to loose money whenever a vulnerabilty arises.
Ease of use comes at a cost. And that cost is security!
I am not a Open Source fanatic (maybe a bit but with good reasons), but I am glad when I see things like this happening.
We all know the story , the hard thing is convincing these Management people who have no idea about real technology.
What are you talking about. It is not about OSS winning market share. It all about quality of software and solutions. And when it comes to MS they have clearly showed that they are only interested in market share.
At least with OSS it is money well spend and not money thrown out of the window because MS is the easiest and most common and because MS has the best marketing around.
Using OSS in places where the public interest and information is involved is crucial.

A couple of years ago I remember I found an article about artwork being part of the manufacturing process for Irix processors.
They stopped doing it because it was not economically advantageous, however.
I stripped the CPUs out of two Indies I had back then to have my own micro digital art collection:-)
The above issues are the only ones that make identity theft a piece of cake. Companies just dont protect the client privacy at all.
I am completely disgusted about there stinging for good security. But all they are doing is bad to themselves. When someone defaces their site, and stills data it is better not to go and ask money straight away, but instead publish the action (not the data) to damage the reputation of the company. That is all they care.
That is the only way the head managers will invest in good security.
This might become a loophole on legally hacking someone else's computer.
A potential new law will again be in contrast to the Computer Misuse Act 1990, the Data protection act, to name a few.
It is almost fun to see the Goverment to try to
fight against hacking by imposing laws, such as
Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, and similar attempts like the Cypercrime Treaty 2001 (
Which basically gives the right to Goverment and Law enformcement agencies to intercept and track down individuals.
Whatever they do they must realize that this is not the way to go !
Technology will always be one step ahead from the Law.
This new security feature that M$ is planning to set up is one of the application scenarios that TCPA is illustrating. But since TCPA got such a bad reputation from the Community noone has bothered to work on the same concept for an Open Source platform.
Now M$ is using the technology to its own advantage and TCPA did not dissapear as many people thought.
Now M$ is ahead in the game and since there is no alternative people will either have to use M$ or not make use of the feature. Which in my opinion, some of the TCPA applications are pretty cool.
People took the wrong approach as far as TCPA is concerned. Instead they should push for an alternative Open Source solution. And then vendors and companies would follow as well.
Yes and we will see more and more of this.As Linux is becoming a viable business alterantive more companies will fill threatened. And First of all is Micro$oft. And the IP issues is so easy to happen. Almost every software technology that used to be closed source, has now been reimplemented by the Open Source community. How can you stop people from writing software? You cant really say, because I have a patent you cant use the open source version of the same technology. And especially when support is also offered. Sorry guys (proprietary) but you will have to change your business strategy. Open Source is more powerfull than any company policy.
I don't think Java is that bad.
I am doing a crazylinux project for an internet applaince prototype and as a student I could not afford a lot of money.
So I could not get a Linux microboard. The cost of the board is sth like £500 and the development kit is 1,500$.
Instead I am using a 50$ microboard with Hardware JM and the free JDK for Linux.
I thought Linux was free. What about you?
Also I am going to use RMI methods which I don't think they are available in other more powerfull languages( C,C++)
And Bill gates hates JAVA bythe way.
Not that I am a debian fun (have it on sparc64 and i3886) but Debian is the best.
However I suppose that the tool would only work on vanilla installations.
