Choosing Microsoft Products May Cost 10-40% More
securitas writes "Jupiter Research has issued a report that says businesses that choose to stay with Microsoft products may end up paying anywhere from 10%-40% more than if they chose another solution. Software Assurance clients will see the lowest costs and SA-have-nots will see the highest costs. The rationale is that Microsoft's strategy of integrating server and client software, as it has done with the new Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Office 2003 suite, will force costly upgrades and licenses. Ultimately the goal is to transform Office into a platform instead of a collection of applications. Analyst Joe Wilcox says, "Microsoft argues that increased integration will cut down ongoing costs, maintenance and what not, but whether that will be the case has yet to be seen. The increased acquisition costs, though, are pretty clear." This leaves the door open for other office suites like Corel WordPerfect, Sun StarOffice and OpenOffice. even if it costs more people will still buy it. do they have a choice?
choose linux you say but lets be honest, an os that cant play every new thing that comes out right away.. who wants that? and macs... dont get me started. im not a gfx designer and actually prefer to have a bunch of random parts scatered on my desk then some stupid non upgradeable case. besides, macs are a religion. i should quote some post i saw a while ago, verbaitum of course "Once i baught a mac i saw that everythign was different. i finaly got all those think different ads, i put bumperstickers on my car.." etc..
these people need the comfort that a society brings. they are the people who get an extra dark doubble latte mocahino from the second cup then drive to their friends houses in their new beetles for the purposes of assembiling ikea furniture. a mac is like a comfortable girl next door who is very reliable, clean, has a trendy fashion sense and is very very boring. i like a computer to be cheap and dirty, just like i likes my women.
I am sure they did not include all the significant factors. Security? Own your own data or have to ransom it from MS someday? Cheaper admin, one good admin can replace 4 MCSE. I suspect the costs for MS will come down when they actually have to compete but that remains to be seen.
