Take Two/Rockstar Announce GTA Sales, Plans

Thanks to GameGossip for their coverage of a Take Two financial conference presentation in which the company revealed details on its software sales and plans. The company's Rockstar Games subsidiary has now, astoundingly, sold "over 25 million units" of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, and "over 20 million" of those were from GTA3 and Vice City alone. Looking forward, the company's financial officers mentioned the November 19th release of GTA developer Rockstar North's gory Manhunt as a highlight, and also noted that "mid-2004 would see the release of The Warriors from Rockstar", as based on Walter Hill's cult gang movie. Finally, the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto, name as yet unknown, "will ship during late 2004."

I'd say that it wasn't quite different enough to merit a new version number. Same engine, same gameplay, different skins, different map. It felt to me like a prequel expansion pack, and since it started on console you can't "expand" the original so it was standalone.

Yeah, Rockstar made it a point to say that Vice City wasn't really GTA 4. More like a GTA 3.5. In fairness, it was a little more than different skins and a different map. They did update the engine and tweak the gameplay enough to consider it more than just an expansion pack.

I'm betting that Rockstar is going to forget about numbers all together and just start giving them subtitles, so the whole "Is it GTA 4 or 5?" discussion will be moot anyway.

Wouldn't it most likely be called GTA : San Angles since the Liberty City and Vice City were also in the original game. Also it will probably be set in the 70's going with the current trend of 90's then 80's. Also San Angles had the Hippy Van and San Francisco which it will probably be based has more of a 70's hippy vibe. Also could be cool with lots of flashy Pimps in their flashy pimp mobiles. Of course all the music would have to be on 8 Track tapes.

No other game here lately has had as much pointless fun to it as GTA and GTA:VC have had. Granted the stories may be over done and tired, but there's nothing like running down grandma after you steal her Hummer from her. It's good to see Rockstar's plans for the future.

What would be cool is a totally free form GTA game, where instead of there being a story as such you start of with nothing (I suppose similar to the others) but you can basically make your own way to 0wning the city, by taking over various neighbourhoods, hiring gangs to patrol your areas, getting involved in turf wars etc.

This would also present the opportunity for multiplayer where, say, you and a friend start at either end of the town and slowly build up your empire while trying to undermine / take over the other guy. You could even do it co-op, where you have 2 per side so one of you could handle running the operation while the other runs covert ops against the other side.

Anyway, I think there's lots of possiblity for something like this.. maybe include a few cities with the time you save on not having to do all the scripted mission stuff.. maybe a random city generator? It wouldn't be as nice as a hand created city but you could still get something quite reasonable.

    Yeah, that'd be a game i'd play :)

Some friends of mine were designing a title just like you described, only multiplayer was a requirement, and some people could play as the cops instead. Cops would work together to take down the crime syndicates run by other players. The option would be open for player Cops to be crooked, and give false tip-offs and be paid off by the mob. While the other side tried to spread their crime ring by the usual illegal means, and not get caught. Players caught would have to serve time in a penalty box similar to Q3 Arena's Jailbreak mod, but could be sprung by other players, including crooked cops paid to free them.

It would be loads of fun if done correctly, though the game is surely not being made now. Hopefully someone else picks the idea up. (Hint, hint).

Good, thoughts. I've always been partial to sandbox games. Though, I do like it when there is a main story (or several) and a huge stack of little side quests (user add on possibilities?). In fact, there is a game like that, it's called Escape Velocity. It's shareware from Ambrosia Software www.ambrosiasw.com It's for mac and windows, and there is already a large community making plug ins for it. There's even some to simulate the two previous escape velocity titles. If you like open game play, Escape Velocity should not be overlooked.

Not quite in the same ballpark as GTA but Privateer was a sandbox game. You had an overaching storyline but plenty of other things to do on the side. Does anyone know if there are or were plans to make a MMORPG of the Privateer universe I think it might be fun.
