WineConf 2004

Anonymous Coward writes "The WineConf conference has opened up. Everyone is welcome at the second semi regular conference of Wine enthusiasts. Come and gather with fellow Wine hackers to: * Discuss the future of Wine * Work on nasty glibc bugs * Attack installers in an install-o-thon * Relax in the beautiful winter weather of Minnesota, enjoying the St. Paul Winter Carnival (complete with Ice Palace!). * Marvel at how the weather promotes an amazing amount of hacking time. * Hoist a real glass of Wine with your compadres at the Mall of America. The conference is in the early stages of planning, so full details are not yet available. However, here are the details that are firm: Date Saturday, January 31st and Sunday, February 1st, 2004."

For those of you looking to go out and have fun here, stay away from mall of america bars, they suck. Unless you're into 35 year old women that are trying to still fit into their high school clothes from 1986. You think I'm kidding?

Block E downtown has some of the more interesting clubs. Infinity club on the first floor of the hotel, there's a cool bar on the 4th floor of the hotel, and there's another club on the 2nd floor of the entertainment complex that is supposed to be awesome, but I forgot the name. Le Meridien is the coolest hotel in town. If your employer is footing the bill, stay there.

People here are unfriendly. Expect to go through more effort than you would in other cities to meet people. Upscale, trendy places which are traditionally stuck up, seem to be the best place to meet people here. Going to shitty frat boy bars like Brother's is the worst thing you can do. Last I checked though, The Lone Tree was still pretty fun on the weekends.

Failing that, you can always pick up 15 year old prostitutes at the Fall of America. (was on a local channel, no link, sorry).

That's quite true. I think people should be aiming at maybe just making OpenGL a little more mature, so it can outperform say DirectX 9 (I think that's what it's at now?) Then I think/hope companies will start creating more games for Linux, I know, if there were more games on the market for Linux, I would buy them for sure. Although, most 'geeks' I know, have given Linux a try, but gave up, due to the fact Linux has no gaming abilities, I haven't let that fail me yet, I won't, because I hope sooner or later, some companies will release games for Linux (I'd really like that to be sooner ^_^)

Writing a C library is no trivial thing. Glibc is easily one of the best out there today, dumping it would be insane and besides, what else would we use? Not going to happen.

In this case Wine was doing some seriously bad things with threading, poking internal structures and overriding the threading subsystem etc - when threading on Linux came up for an overhaul surprise surprise Wine broke. It's mostly fixed now, I think. The end result is a lot more sane and robust though.
