Coffee Flavored Breakfast Cereal

Musrum writes "Hubbards, the New Zealand based makers of fine breakfast cereals, have launched 'Cafe au Lait', which they describe as "light coffee flavored flakes". This is great, just the thing for Xmas morning, wonderful coffee flavour, not too sweet. What took them so long? The packaging meets all known requirements for political correctness. "Flavour." That's so genteel and British-sounding . . . but it doesn't answer the only important question, dammit!
(Which is, naturally, does it have -- and if so how much -- caffeine?)

combine your morning coffee with breakfast

Doesn't everyone eat their Cheerios in out of their coffee cup anyway? Surely I'm not the only one . . .

That's kinda funny because a few months ago I discovered the cappucino flavored soy milk. I used to use vanilla or chocolate soy milk with my plain cereal then found the joys of the coffee flavored stuff. It made plain Wheaties much more enjoyable to eat. Yum!

Anyone read Fast Food Nation? There's a fascinating article on the chemicals the "flavor industry" uses. There's a chemical compound that smells just like a grilled burger, fresh cherries, etc. Making cereal taste like coffee is probably easy, but it probably doesn't actually contain any coffee. You didn't think that strawberry shake from McD's containes strawberries, did you?

Every American should read that book. It's incredible.

Kinda like Jelly Belly jelly beans. How they can make jelly beans taste like popcorn and coffee is truly amazing. I remember getting "green" and "red" jelly beans when I was younger. I didn't like the black ones much...not a big licorice fan (yet I love Jagermeister...WTF?). The things they can do with chemicals now days...scary...but cool.

Take a walk through your local Wild Oats mega-chain or "whole foods" store or "health foods" store. You know, the ones selling the weird stuff that people pay a lot of extra money for.

Anyway, I was eating a bowl of cereal from such a store, and I read the ingredients, and they'd actually added caffeine to the stuff.

I'll check our store tonight and see if I can find the cereal again. It had a vaguely Indian spiritual leaderish name to it. And an Indian vaguely spiritual leader's photo on the back of the box. The stuff was oversweetened, though, so I wasn't too keen on it.

ok my grandfather used to be a coffee farmer in jamaica so i'm an expert.

The ultimate cup of coffee recipe

Blend a nice dark Roast like Yuban with the light flavor of something like Folgers or my favorite Jamaican blue mountain.

use two filters as the slower straining process allows more flavor.

use one very very big heaping spoon for each cup.

remove the glass thingy (carraffe) and allow the coffee brew to almost fill the part of the coffee machine with the coffee grounds.

Take your mug and put it in place of the carraffe and let the liquid mana fil your cup.

add a pinch of salt, then sweeten to your preference.

put the carraffe back so everyone else can enjoy.

folgers?! yuban?! i so hope you're kidding. those "coffees" are not roasted long enough to full exfoliate the beans. Not to mention the sit on a shelf next to forever before they get to your kitchen. as for your method: paper filters remove the oils from the bean before it ever makes it to your cup. bad. also, exposing the beans to the coffee for a longer time is bad. the best way to extract the flavor is to use HOT water and pressre to quickly push the water through the beans. that way, you get the flavor without the sour/bitter taste. i dunno about a pinch of salt, imma have to try that, but it sounds iffy.

Given the how much geeks love caffeine, one can't help but think this cereal is directly targeted at them. That being a given, what side-of-the-box recipes might we see, similar to Chex Mix and Rice Krispie Treats? Imagine a rolled up ball of coffee-flavored flakes, bound together with honey and marshmallow, perhaps with some peanuts thrown in for good measure, and what do you get?
