Windows 98 Phased Out
Via_Patrino writes "According to Microsoft on january 16, MS Windows 98 and 98se will end Extended Support Phase, that means they'll became obsolete and assisted support will no longer be available from Microsoft, affecting about 27% of the internet users. That means even if 98 is working well for your needs (and especially computer specifications) and you want to pay for support (because that might cost less than switching hardware) you can't, because who will be able to patch eventual new bugs (security related or not) besides Microsoft? So if you're not planning a switch it might be your last opportunity to update MS Windows 98, after that some software might disappear from MS website (just like MSIE 5.5 for 95 did)."
Fact : Windows 98 is dying
It is official; Netcraft confirms: Windows 98 is dying One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Windows 98 community when IDC confirmed that Windows 98 market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Windows 98 has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Windows 98 is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.
You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Windows 98's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Windows 98 faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Windows 98 because Windows 98 is dying. Things are looking very bad for Windows 98. As many of us are already aware, Windows 98 continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.
Windows 98se is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time Windows 98se developers CowboyNeal and CmdrTaco only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: Windows 98se is dying.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
Windowze 98 leader Bruce Perns states that there are 7000 users of Windowze 98. How many users of Window$ 98 are there? Let's see. The number of Windowze 98 versus Window$ 98 posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 Window$ 98 users. W98SE posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of Window$ 98 posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of W98SE. A recent article put Windows 98se at about 80 percent of the Windows 98 market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Windows 98se users. This is consistent with the number of Windows 98se Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of Microsoft Corporation, abysmal sales and so on, Windows 98se went out of business and was taken over by Sand niggers from India who sell another troubled OS. Now these Sand niggers from India are also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major surveys show that Windows 98 has steadily declined in market share. Windows 98 is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Windows 98 is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. Windows 98 continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Windows 98 is dead.
Fact: Windows 98 is dying
Screw Windows98, what about us MS DOS users?
Hack your mind out of its sandbox.
Sounds like that typical MS, screwing you out of support after a scant 6 or more years. BASTARDS!
Of course, when you try to update Red Hat Linux 5.2 or Apple OS 8.5, it still works flawlessly. But no, those greedy, awful bastards at MS are just continually SCREWING the customer.
Anyone still using win9x really ought to upgrade to windows 2k/XP. It will save you a lot of headaches.
...and upgrade the obsolete headaches to modern pain-in-the-asses.
Can you imagine the support for that. What if that code gets into Linux. Can you imagine the legal headache there?
OSX doesn't run too good on most machines that currently run 98. Something about a power something, or maybe a G something, i forget ;).
Give me a fucking break!!! That's not the only option. I switched to OS X and have never been happier!
That's odd, because you sound decidely irritated.
Ever heard of an operatingsystem called Linux ?
The good part - you always have the source!
Just saying it like it are.

There are apparently people who don't look at porn on the internet too, I've never met them either.
everyone would be going- who gives a f***
every day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
They used MovieOS, of course.

the strongest word is still the word "free"
Just upgrade to Windows ME which is still supported.
Umm, no, wait.. never mind...
I'm a perfectionist but I'm trying to cut back.
This article reminds me of an old joke I just made up:
Why did they call it Windows?
Because it's easily broken.
