Open Source Awards 2004
An anonymous reader writes "The first Open Source Awards 2004 have been announced. These newly created awards aspire to be the Nobel Prizes of the open source world. Congratulations to the developers of Valgrind, VideoLAN, JACK, and Pango."
Valgrind? VideoLAN? JACK? Pango?
Only one of those names gives me any semblance of a clue of what it might do.
At least it's not "Xouvert," but still, I just have to ask out of curiosity--why is it Open Source developers cannot come up with a single reasonable name for their projects? It's bad enough I have to choose between these things called "KDE" and "GNOME." Is there a switch in their brains that's flipped that requires them to choose the most esoteric names possible? It's not cute or funny.
There has to be bigger, better things going on out there..
6 hour rant...
...and that is why they should be called the GNUbel Prizes.
A bunch of utilities that do things a dozen other things do already get prizes. So what.
Meanwhile I, like many others, sit here waiting looking at sites and sourceforge pages for projects that have reached version 0.90 or 0.99 and haven't had any updates since july.
