Keystroke Logger Faces Federal Wiretap Charges

securitas writes "In what prosecutors say is the first case of its kind, a former insurance claims manager was indicted on federal wiretapping charges for allegedly installing a keystroke logger on another employee's computer. The device was secretly installed 'on a PC used by a secretary to senior executives at Bristol West Insurance Group.' Reuters reports that the man, who had been fired, was gathering information for a class action lawsuit against his former employer. SecurityFocus interviews would-be keystroke logger user Larry Lee Ropp who reportedly installed the KEYKatcher device on the PC."

Greenpeace UK makes 'sensible' switch to Linux

Greenpeace UK has updated its IT systems and chosen to use Linux in three of its four systems because it was the 'sensible' choice

In a general update of its IT systems, environmental campaign group Greenpeace UK has chosen to run three of its four systems on Linux instead of Windows because the open source operating system was the "more sensible" option. The decision makes Greenpeace the latest in a long line of high-profile organisations to switch from Windows to the open-source Linux operating system.

Steve Thomson, finance and IT director at Greenpeace UK, said the organisation evaluated both Windows and Linux and decided to run its Mail server on Windows but employ Linux for its Web server, application server and general office operations system: "We looked at the two and Linux just seemed more flexible, probably cheaper and probably more sensible for these particular bits. We pick what is best for what we are doing -- there is no religious bias towards Linux or Windows," he said.

Thompson said move to a SAN would allow the organisation to manage the increase in its data storage requirements without having to keep upgrading individual servers: "Like everybody, we are going to grow the amount of data we are storing fairly dramatically and the most flexible answer was to get a SAN. Server upgrades will become fewer and far between -- we hope," he said.

Another reason for the change was to reduce the overall complexity of the Greenpeace IT system, which previously also included Windows NT, Unix and Novell servers. "Having only two operating systems is an advantage after effectively running five," said Thompson.

The choices made by Greenpeace reflect an increasingly common move by IT departments to deploy Linux where it has already proved to be more versatile, secure and cheaper -- despite attempts by Microsoft to convince people otherwise.

at my condo association club house.

Our condo association board of directors is so corrupt that at the last election meetings an all out brawl happened. Five people were arrested and two or three taken to the hospital.

The property manager, selected by the board of directors (BOD), has a little empire going on where he is the king and the BOD is wrapped around his finger.

Kickbacks are being handed out to the BOD to keep them in line. One day, before I knew how unscrupulous this individual is, I was helping him with his office PC and I found hundreds of cookies to bestiality sites. He claimed it was all from e-mail. (Yeah, right. What's this xxx.jpg doing in your temporary internet files cache then?) Not realizing what *more* of a dirt bag this dude was I deleted the files (I was disgusted with it and him. {shrug})

Afterward, I heard about all the charges being made against him and how certain condo owners are trying to get a Forensic Accountant to investigate the books because it is thought that he is cheating the books *and* running other businesses through the association clubhouse.

The guy got caught having sex in the men's bathroom with his mistress *twice* during business hours and after his wife found out the clown moved into the clubhouse for at least three months. When approached to pay for the $130/day for living there (that's the normal rental price for condo owners) he flatly refused and I think this is when the huge fight transpired (which I missed, dammit!).

Plus, the BOD allows him to handle the votes each year. We had the best turnout this year for people who voted against him. He uses the names of people who didn't show to the vote meeting to apply their name to his tally to keep himself in office which the BOD turns a blind eye to.

He's caused our insurance to be cancelled, he's had to raise our condo fees twice in the 1 1/2 years I've lived there, he's played bumper cars with people chasing them then passing them and as the chasee turns chaser he slams on the breaks and then sues the condo owner for ramming him and harassment, the list goes on!!

Anyway, I was thinking of applying one of these keyloggers to capture his computer activity. This recent arrest of the California guy gives me pause to take such action. I've done nothing wrong, yet, and certainly don't want to spend 5 years in jail because I took action to help clean up our neighborhood.

We've looked in to several options but authorities have nothing solid to book this clown on. Any ideas on how we can catch this guy doing something wrong without committing crimes ourselves?

Basic human decency. You don't stand over your kid while they're using they're making a bowel movement. You don't stand over them when they're urinating. You don't stand over them while they're showering.

Even more to the point, if you're like most parents, you don't stand over your kid when they're studying, or reading, or playing baseball or basketball or even watching TV. You're not standing watchfully at their shoulder when they go to the library or to the mall. If you're like most armchair parents you basically ignore your kid except when you want to interrogate them.

What message do you honestly think you're sending by intensely scrutinizing them when they sit at a computer? You're indirectly telling them that the computer is the most important part of their life. Then you want to moan and complain around the water cooler that they don't take in interest in the things that you did when you were a child.

    You figure it out.
