Star Wars Episode 3 Release Date Announced

snitty writes "Lucas Films has announced the release date for the last movie in the trilogy of prequels. The date is set for May 19, 2005. The title of the movie has yet to be released. I think I'll give it another year or so before I get on line for tickets."

Time for a thread triage. Everyone complaining about how Star Wars is terrible and your childhood is ruined, reply here. People discussing Lucas and his never-ending quest to rape the franchise for more money, over on the left. Speculation about what crazy-assed title Lucas will come up for on this one, on the right. GNAA, you know what to do.

This reminds me of last winter when Episode II came out on DVD.

I was at my local Walmart store when I stumbled across the island display offering Star Wars Episode II for some rediculously low price. I think it was $9.99.

"Wow," I thought, "That's really cheap! I should pick up a copy!" I greedily snatched up one of the widescreen packages.

But then I remembered that Episode II really really sucked. I put the package down.

But it was only $9.99! Even if it sucked, what a bargain!

But then again, the movie really did suck. Completely. In fact I could easily rant for an hour about how badly the movie sucked. I mean, don't get me started on Jango Fett, the apparently psychic bounty hunter. Or the totally clueless Jedi. Or Count Doogie. Arghh.... I digress.

Anyway, I decided not to waste $9.99 on the DVD. Unless the reviews for Episode III are really stellar, I'll save my $7.50 and skip that movie too.

The star wars universe is black and white. The plot of all movies is simple and straightforward. The dialogue is simplistic and easy to follow.

The movies, although I enjoyed them, have never been a pinnacle example of filmmaking. They're just a fun way to waste a couple hours.

When I was a kid I couldnt wait to see Empire or Jedi. And it wasnt for the brilliant dialogue, I wanted to see some cool space dogfights, neato lightsaber battles, and weirdo looking robots and aliens.

I wasn't as dissapointed in Eps 1 & 2 as the rest of you. I only showed up for the effects, and shut my brain off to watch 'em. Yoda going all Wu-Tang at the end of Ep 2 was cool.

The only character I ever thought was cool was Boba Fett, so I guess I'm a little miffed that they rewrote him as a hot-headed latino with a chip on his shoulder. I liked the mysterious, soulless, motivated-by-cold-hard-cash bounty hunter, myself.

Anyhow, there'll be a ton of cool fights in the next one. The Jedi get their asses kicked and Anakin gets knocked into some acid/lava/wookie urine..

I'll watch it, and enjoy it for what it is.

My greatest fear is that Lucas will decide to remake the original Episode 4 -- from scratch, so that he can fully incorporate his "vision". He could justify it pretty well by the need to tie up the loose ends that are sure to be left by the prequels, like:

    * Why doesn't C3P0 remember being created by Anakin? He keeps saying "Thank the Maker", when he could easily thank him in person.

    * Assuming that C3PO has had his memory wiped, what about R2D2? Are we going to have to say they wiped him, too, or does he just not bother telling what he knows?

    * In Ep IV, Darth Vader doesn't seem to ascribe any particular significance to Tatooine -- his birthplace.

    * We were introduced to Luke's future foster parents (in Lucas' trademark ham-handed way) in Ep II. So when Anakin/Darth visited, why would he have them barbequed?

    * In fact, why would he even need to massacre Jawas to find the droids -- why not just drop in on Owen and Beru directly?

Maybe some of these questions are going to be answered next May... but I can't imagine it'll be in any way satisfying. I suspect Lucas would remake Eps IV, V, VI in a heartbeat, if the studios were fool enough to let him. And they could well be.

This is the entire and I mean ENTIRE problem with Ep. I and II, everyone is seen as either pure good or pure evil.

There is no one like Han, who is by nature a self serving man, but actually has a decent side to him.

Makes it so you can actually like him.

Obviously this type of person isn't something that Lucas agrees with, considering the chop job he did with the whole shooting first thing.

Ok, is there any way that Lucas could dig out of the hole he created from Ep. I/II? Suppose that Ep. III was good... we're talking LOTR:ROTK good. We get epic battle sequences, a moving story, a somewhat coherent plot, and really developed characters. Would he find any redemption from his fans, or is this movie destined to fail despite anyone's best efforts? Will people ultimately see the prequels as a success if this last movie is really well done and ties up all the lose ends, or has that boat sailed already and there is no point of return? I am really looking forward to this movie since going to a Star Wars opening night is not like going to any other movie... it's an event. Even if the movie is mediocore, I like the energy and enthusiasm that people bring with them.

I've heard enough about how EP:I and EP:II suck. I've seen bother at the theater and pretty much enjoyed watching them. Upon reflection and hearing all the gripes, I've wondered what could have been done to please those who complain so bitterly about these films and come back to the same realization in both cases. The viewer has to have gone in with no preconceptions of what it should be, should never have seen any other Star Wars pictures, all Sci-Fi movies which have benefited from Lucas' techniques and improvements in CGI never have been used, all films during the past 30 years would have to be westerns, romances, sharks eating beach-goers, etc. and last, the viewer needs to be 25 or younger.

While that's a lot to ask, it all does contribute mightily to the feelings of disappointment. The reality is everything else has gotten much better, catching up as it were. Sure, you could toss Jar Jar, but that character isn't the problem. The problem is the viewer. Therefore I only have the following to offer:

    Achtung Alles Lootensteepers!

Das Star Wehrs filme is nicht fur fingerpointen und trashentalken. Ist easy kirisizen der Lucas produceren und karakter assailen mit poppenkorn und schpitzen sprayen.
