Star Wars Episode 3 Release Date Announced
snitty writes "Lucas Films has announced the release date for the last movie in the trilogy of prequels. The date is set for May 19, 2005. The title of the movie has yet to be released. I think I'll give it another year or so before I get on line for tickets."
Time for a thread triage. Everyone complaining about how Star Wars is terrible and your childhood is ruined, reply here. People discussing Lucas and his never-ending quest to rape the franchise for more money, over on the left. Speculation about what crazy-assed title Lucas will come up for on this one, on the right. GNAA, you know what to do.
Here's to hoping he decided to put a little more thought into dialogue and less into the special effects.
What's the date for the pirated release?
Great, now I have to wait a year and some change to bitch about how bad Episode 3 is.

... to theatres, or to bittorrent?
Woohoo! I wonder when they'll start production on the 4th episode?

Why not release it on a Friday? Now people will miss at least a day of work standing in line, and Friday recovering from the night before.
Saskboy's blog is good. 9 out of 10 dentists agree.
I think I'll give it another year or so before I get on line for tickets.
You don't have to get a ticket to rent it at blockbuster.. I don't understand.
...before we're forced to relinquish any last vestiges of hope that something can be salvaged from the smoldering wreckage that Star Wars has become.
Hey, don't underestimate Lucas. It could be worse. Much worse. Way worse. Worse than you or I can even imagine.
first matrix, then lord of the rings, and now the last anticipated star wars release? what else is there?
Perhaps he could just call the new movie:
Episode III: CGI
Hmm... Let's see.
Episodes IV, V, and VI were released at three year intervals in May. Episode I released May 1999... Episode II released May 2002. Is anyone surprised that Episode III is being released May 2005?

Hopefully this can enter the front-running for the title of Worst 3rd Movie Installment Ever. Matrix Revolutions recently took it from The Godfather Part 3.
Although Revenge of the Nerds 3 was pretty bad.

Ironically, if it got any worse, it might cause mass rioting, which from some points of view might be better.

How good?

'You'll see it!'
I better.

This reminds me of last winter when Episode II came out on DVD.
I was at my local Walmart store when I stumbled across the island display offering Star Wars Episode II for some rediculously low price. I think it was $9.99.
"Wow," I thought, "That's really cheap! I should pick up a copy!" I greedily snatched up one of the widescreen packages.
But then I remembered that Episode II really really sucked. I put the package down.
But it was only $9.99! Even if it sucked, what a bargain!
But then again, the movie really did suck. Completely. In fact I could easily rant for an hour about how badly the movie sucked. I mean, don't get me started on Jango Fett, the apparently psychic bounty hunter. Or the totally clueless Jedi. Or Count Doogie. Arghh.... I digress.
Anyway, I decided not to waste $9.99 on the DVD. Unless the reviews for Episode III are really stellar, I'll save my $7.50 and skip that movie too.

For example, people gasped in awe at the opening scene in TTT, (Gandalf diving down under the bridge in Moria after the Balrog), but few realize (or will admit) that those effects were essentially copied from the scene in AOTC where Anakin dives from his speeder

The Surgeon General says sigs are bad for me.
The star wars universe is black and white. The plot of all movies is simple and straightforward. The dialogue is simplistic and easy to follow.
The movies, although I enjoyed them, have never been a pinnacle example of filmmaking. They're just a fun way to waste a couple hours.
When I was a kid I couldnt wait to see Empire or Jedi. And it wasnt for the brilliant dialogue, I wanted to see some cool space dogfights, neato lightsaber battles, and weirdo looking robots and aliens.
I wasn't as dissapointed in Eps 1 & 2 as the rest of you. I only showed up for the effects, and shut my brain off to watch 'em. Yoda going all Wu-Tang at the end of Ep 2 was cool.
The only character I ever thought was cool was Boba Fett, so I guess I'm a little miffed that they rewrote him as a hot-headed latino with a chip on his shoulder. I liked the mysterious, soulless, motivated-by-cold-hard-cash bounty hunter, myself.
Anyhow, there'll be a ton of cool fights in the next one. The Jedi get their asses kicked and Anakin gets knocked into some acid/lava/wookie urine..
I'll watch it, and enjoy it for what it is.

I think this comic strip says all that needs to be said about the new Star Wars movies.
In a very sarcastic manner, of course.
Episode III? Ahh, who cares.

Oh well you see HFS+++++++++ supports Force-based security descriptors. So only those trained with Force Authenicate can access those protected areas in the Jedi RAID array. Didn't you listen to the director's commentary on the DVD?!?
After the huge box office ratings of the first movie, you can pretty much guarantee at least a couple more sequels including a buddy flick with Chris Rock as the comic relief sidekick.
I'm trying to teach myself to set people on fire with my mind... Is it hot in here?
me thinks you missed the joke
jar jar says: "Episode 4 was the first movie relased. Me so think you so stupid"
My greatest fear is that Lucas will decide to remake the original Episode 4 -- from scratch, so that he can fully incorporate his "vision". He could justify it pretty well by the need to tie up the loose ends that are sure to be left by the prequels, like:
* Why doesn't C3P0 remember being created by Anakin? He keeps saying "Thank the Maker", when he could easily thank him in person.
* Assuming that C3PO has had his memory wiped, what about R2D2? Are we going to have to say they wiped him, too, or does he just not bother telling what he knows?
* In Ep IV, Darth Vader doesn't seem to ascribe any particular significance to Tatooine -- his birthplace.
* We were introduced to Luke's future foster parents (in Lucas' trademark ham-handed way) in Ep II. So when Anakin/Darth visited, why would he have them barbequed?
* In fact, why would he even need to massacre Jawas to find the droids -- why not just drop in on Owen and Beru directly?
Maybe some of these questions are going to be answered next May... but I can't imagine it'll be in any way satisfying. I suspect Lucas would remake Eps IV, V, VI in a heartbeat, if the studios were fool enough to let him. And they could well be.
Stressed? Me? Of course not. Stress is what a rubber band feels before it breaks, silly.
This is the entire and I mean ENTIRE problem with Ep. I and II, everyone is seen as either pure good or pure evil.
There is no one like Han, who is by nature a self serving man, but actually has a decent side to him.
Makes it so you can actually like him.
Obviously this type of person isn't something that Lucas agrees with, considering the chop job he did with the whole shooting first thing.
Don't forget: Someone will have a bad feeling about something.
what happens when your children see it in their proper order? They will love it (because its so childish) and the series will get better, the opposite of what normally happens with sequels.

No, it's not that the graphics weren't great. It's that the graphics were used in place of story line.
In TTT, Gandolf has good reason for falling down the chasm--afterall, it wasn't even his choice! I'm sure that he'd rather be doing other things.
Anakin diving off the speeder was just stupid. He did it with no clear reason for doing it, in the face of the great possibility he would become jedi-jelly. He used the special effect as a motivator in the movie, in place of inteligence. Futhermore, it was done with absolutely no suspense. We know he (Anakin) isn't going to die; Gandolf, on the other hand had the people that never read the book fooled--last thing they were expecting to see was Gandolf fighting and falling!

No way. This is slashdot, remember. Most of the people posting didn't read the article before commenting, why should they watch the movie before bitching and maning?
He won and raised all three kids as a single father. Granted, a single father with a HELL of a lot of money, but a single father all the same... and one who packed lunches and cooked family dinners.
The guy might have sucked at telling a love story, but I have no doubt he actually loves his kids. I just think a love story didn't play correctly for him as he was writing it...
Of course, in the love story he wrote, the mother dies young, the kids are split apart, the father cuts off the son's hand and the son and daughter have romantic moments together.
Ewwwwww.
Part of the fun of going to see these movies (Matrix 3, Star wars 3,etc..) is joining in the rants about how bad they sucked.
Whine all you want to: you'll see it, you'll enjoy it on some level (usual the "we're all kids at heart" sort), and then you'll come back here and whine how Jar-Jar didn't die so that you aren't seen as "uncool" in the land of the geeks.
When did we (geeks, I mean) become such hypercritcal, self-loathing, materialistic whiny no-no's? Too much Spam as a kid, or too many jocks? IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE MOVIES, THEN WHY DO YOU FUCKING CARE?!? Go away and do something else.
Anyhow: mod away... I have a shitload of karma to burn and could use a negative number for a post...
How about Episode III: I Believe That Horse is Still Moving
Ok, is there any way that Lucas could dig out of the hole he created from Ep. I/II? Suppose that Ep. III was good... we're talking LOTR:ROTK good. We get epic battle sequences, a moving story, a somewhat coherent plot, and really developed characters. Would he find any redemption from his fans, or is this movie destined to fail despite anyone's best efforts? Will people ultimately see the prequels as a success if this last movie is really well done and ties up all the lose ends, or has that boat sailed already and there is no point of return? I am really looking forward to this movie since going to a Star Wars opening night is not like going to any other movie... it's an event. Even if the movie is mediocore, I like the energy and enthusiasm that people bring with them.

While that's a lot to ask, it all does contribute mightily to the feelings of disappointment. The reality is everything else has gotten much better, catching up as it were. Sure, you could toss Jar Jar, but that character isn't the problem. The problem is the viewer. Therefore I only have the following to offer:
