OO.org Selects Its Own Sea Bird

Elektroschock writes "A new mascot of the OO.org project was announced today: A crazy sea gull. I wonder whether it will help to convince office workers of Open Office. "Andrea [Maggioni]'s contribution is not only beautiful and effective but also illustrates the potential of young people to contribute importantly to real projects under the banner of Free and Open Source Software." Andrea, "whose cheerful drawing, of a fun-looking seagull holding a fish, plays on the "OOo" shorthand of OpenOffice.org"... ehemm, it's a crazy sea gull."

    The article specifically states the mascot is for the OO.org schools project, not a general mascot for the OO.org project.

    I have enough trouble trying to convince coworkers to adopt F/OS Software without having to deal with "cutesy" mascots. Not that Clippy was any better.

    I thought April Fool's was over? Spelling mistakes aside (mascot?), I think this is a really bad move for OO. Isn't the goal of OO to replace Microsoft Office? From a corporate standpoint, as cute as it is, a crazy gull is not what people want. There was reluctance to even use Tux back in the day, if I remember correctly, who is several shades less...crazy than the gull.

    What message does this send? Use OO and you'll go nuts (or have a fish purse?). I don't think this was well thought out.

    so just how will this mascott promote OO?
    It just doesn't seem to inspire lots of confidence, but maybe that's just me...

    This Slashdot post is misleading (not very unusual, I understand). From the article:

    The recently established Schools Project of OpenOffice.org (OOoEdu) has a new mascot.

    It's the mascot for their school-targetted marketing. And pretty bloody appropriate for young kids, I think.

    I bet that fish is thinking "In SOVIET RUSSIA, seagull eat- OH, CRAP!"
