MC68040 writes "Well, this has to be one of the weirdest computer mods I've seen this far. The heavy metal pc takes compting to maybe not a new but different dimension. Computing on wheels, and we're not talking a car computer here. Have a look for yourself, 2x3.2 GHz on wheels, it's sure worth seeing if you're interested in mods."

  Not only is it /.'ed (as I cannot even connect), but it sounds like blatant false advertising, as my Iron Maiden-hungry eyes nearly popped out at the possibility of a server that reflects my musical tastes...

  Personally, I find it asinine that /. moderators pass links to sites that obviously don't have the bandwidth to deal with being a /. headline.
  
  Not only does his site suffer, but the other 200 virtual hosts on the server go down too. Guess what that results in? Pissed off customers calling the hosting company raising hell and demanding discounts on that month's service. Not to mention all the people who can't get to the other sites hosted on the box.
  
  All in the name of a few /. banner ad clicks, eh?

  This debate has raged many times, in many different threads. Here are my (unasked for) two cents.
  
  1. If you are paying a hosting company, and your site goes down due to inadequate bandwidth, this is not slashdot's fault. Its not even your fault (arguably you should have chosen a better hosting company, but still), it is the hosting companys fault for not having fault-tolerant hardware and / or effective bandwidth-throttling measures in place. While I am not saying the site shouldn't have gone down, it shouldn't have disappeared, and it certainly shouldn't have taken down the other sites running from that box. The admins of the hosting company are at fault here.
  
  2. If you aren't using a hosting company, and you post something that you even SUSPECT could alter your normal traffic patterns, be prepared for just that. While the slashdot effect is awe-inspiring, its not the be-all and end-all. Lots of sites have survived it before, and not all of them were sitting on huge pipes with mammoth hardware.
  
  Slashdot has absolutely no burden of guilt in linking to a site inadequately prepared for traffic.

  Slashdot should, however, ask the site administrator if it is OK to link to them. Bandwidth can cost money, especially if it is metered daily. Slashdot can cost people lots of money with indiscriminate linking.

  Not very. The courts have ruled that links are not illegal. If you don't want people to visit your site, your best course of action is not to have a site.

During that upgrade period, the modding scene began to unfold.

Oh puh-leeze. Okay, so I'll admit, there are cool, tasteful, artistic PC case mods, like this one. But most case mods are just plain vulgar, with brightly colored leds all over the place, bits of things that don't go together visually but are supposed to look "fast", or "powerful" etc..., are ugly and frankly are the computer equivalent of that.

Real good case mods are not many.

Not being able to see the pictures since the site was slashdoted, I wonder what the "Heavy Metal" computer on wheels could be? If the site gives any clue I think this "Heavy Metal Computer on Wheels" is nothing more than two dells taped toghether inside a shopping cart.

dear case modders, here are a few questions that you may want to consider before modifying your case.

1) will modding my case make my computer fast, more capable, or "better" in any way?
2) will it get me all the hot computer groupie chicks?
3) if i cared about esthetics so much, wouldn't it have been more cost-effective to buy a mac?
4) can my quasi-artistic needs be channeled into better projects?
5) will other people think about me the same as they do when they see a guy driving a civic with a huge wing and fartcan exhaust?
6) is modding my case really just a desparate cry for attention?
7) ???

  Have you ever done anything to suit your own personal desires, like paint a house or make a model or choose the colour of something? Did you think about how many hot chicks it would get you at the time?
  
  I didn't know wanting to be creative, express yourself or be different was something that needed to be rationised with logic before you did it....

  Even though you're trolling (in a funny way), I'll answer you seriously. And this is from a guy who has no mods on his case, just a couple extra fans installed in premade locations.

  For some of them, yes. Airflow is usually a high concern in a mod. All the eye candy doesn't help performance, but good airflow can let you OC and/or get more life out of your gear as it's kept cooler.

  Because esthetics isn't the whole of it. The joy is in the doing. It's a hobby, a project, something fun to do.

  Define "better". Art is subjective and "better" is in the eye of the doer. If the modder felt it would be "better" to paint a painting, he'd do that.

  Probably, but I suspect both people don't care what others think, as they're doing this for themselves.

which would also be a great design. Even cooler if you could have some mini-rc satellite droids (w/ video&audio telemetry) that could come be controlled from the PC. Then, to be able to control the whole thing from the web....
