Hotmail Loses Customer Files

Rick Zeman writes "News.com is reporting that Microsoft's Hotmail service has lost customers' files 'due to 'system events.' The particular user cited, of course, has no recourse because of the broad disclaimers companies such as Microsoft hide behind; however, you are getting what you pay for. The scariest part of the article, however, is when a spokesman for iBackup, an Internet-based backup company, disclaims,'We do not provide a 100 percent guarantee that the backup will take place' of customers' data being stored with them for a fee."

A full-up suite of MS software costs several hundred dollars at least - and loss of data is commonplace.

How is it news when a free Microsoft offering acts the same way?

How is this any different from almost ANY computer/technology company. If I download some Linux distro and store my most critical info on it and the file system corrupts itself thereby losing all this data, what recourse do I have. Zip, nada, zilch. You gets what you pays for (and sometime even less). But hey, with Linux (or any other OSS), you could always download the source and try to figure out what went wrong ;)

Such as the GPL, for example? You know, the great, free-as-in-speech license that makes no warranties whatsoever? Or any OSS license for that matter.

So being poor means that the risks don't apply to you? Get stuffed. Everything in life carries the risk of getting burned and you had better well understand that these companies are not going to break the bank over securing a service that they are providing for free. The risks are going to be greater because they are going to care less about it than the pay services. As an investor they damn well better look out for maintaining an income flow. Anything else is not serious about being in business and ranks no higher than a glorified lemonaid stand.

There are plenty of people out there who won't get off the cigarettes or booze or whatever other distraction they have keeping them from using the money as investment towards something constructive like a formal education, a computer, or simply books. For those who are not in that category and are truly pushing upward, you have my sympathy, and I'm rooting for you. If you push forward all you can do is go up. If you invest in destructive ways all you can do is go down in flames and you have no sympathy from me at all. Don't get all commie on us.
