Anyone remember those? ;) How many games actualy had support for them? Two? Three? Eventualy, it didn't work neither, due to lack of supporting software ;/

I remember that Logitech had a pointing device that would allow 3D-movement, that was like 10 years ago. Can't remember the name though. I frankly don't see in what niche there would be a use for a 3D-mouse. Not even gaming, not even 3D-development (such as CAD/CAI). But I'm curious to hear it from other users...

I am not trying to turn this post into a nostalgic troll, I'm actually trying to make a point here.. just sing along with me :)

Back in the days, making a demo was about showing off "software"-skills. A demo was all about coding fancy effects on a broad range of hardware with no support for hardware acceleration whatsoever.
Soft pop, technoish 4-, 8-channel music was tracked (trackered?) on a crappy soundcard (thank you Gravis for bringing us the GUS!!)
Pixelated art was often a result of many hours of hard work, patience and eye for detail.

A tech demo as referred to in the article is much more about showing off the capabilities of new hardware. The demoscene has brought to the fore some very talented artists, some of them making their way into the professional software business.

But still, I think there is a big difference between a demo (as in, "demoscene") and a showoff presentation with some fancy effects. The ideology and philosophy is totally different (as is the expected result and audience).

I'm not trying to be al elitist about the demoscene. I just think that it's a subculture and should be considered as such.

That's the point exactly. People don't want to download zillions of packages and mess around with them in order to be able to view their video files.

From a regular user point-of-view... I hate to say that the fuss with installing all those packages will scare people.

  19. Great for people with handicap on eyeBlog · · Score: 4, Interesting

Actually, I think this is great for people who suffer a physical handicap (eg. paralysed).
Nowadays there are similar systems. A paralysed friend of mine uses a small LED beamer attached to his glasses to use the computer. By moving his head, he moves the red dot on the screen which functions as the cursor. A sensor of some kind interpretes the signal and moves the cursor.
Pretty expensive piece of equipment, though.
Well, instead they could use some of those sensors to track eye movement and position in relation to the computer screen.
Being given the proper use, I think these gizmo's will eventualy find their way on the right market.

    1) You fail to see my point. What did I say in my parent post? The problem lies within fanatism.
    2) I wanne see proof that the Corran promotes beheading of people.
    3) Even if it does, you should put things in their historical context. The Corran, the Bible, whatever holy book you wanna refer to. All of them are outdated and contain values that don't necessarily reflect nowadays modern life (appart from universal values such as love, compassion, understanding,...). If you fail to see this, back to #1 > Fanatism baby!

During centuries, people have performed gruesome acts using religion as a cover to justify them.
The crusades during the dark ages, thousands of people murdered... Did Jesus ordered that?
The Japanese occupation of China, did Buddha ordered that?
As I said, even GWB does it. "God is on our side" et caetera... Who is he to claim that? (and don't even think about getting me started on capital punishment!)

Btw, of course beheading someone is wrong, nobody questions THAT. Even Hamas & Hezbollah have condemned the beheading of Nick Berg. Point is, bad people exist everywhere, regardless of their religion.

I tried not to turn this post into a troll. For the clueless: the point I'm trying to make is that fanatism is evil, but it's something of all religions. You can not condemn a whole religion for that.
