The second heart-warming tale concerns a conversation Allen reportedly overheard late one night (as he was finishing up DOS 2.0) between Gates and Steve Ballmer discussing how to get Allen's Microsoft stock back if the Hodgkins disease Allen was battling killed him. Yikes."
First of all, Cringely doesn't even attribute this information to a real source in his article, so there is no way anybody can even verify this. He just says two good sources, which mean almost nothing.
The second thing is, this sort of planning happens all the time at every big company. I know most of the slashbots probably never worked a real job, but it's good planning in the corporate world to know plan for where such a huge share of stock is going to go.
In short, this article is such a hack job looking for biters, I don't even know why it was posted to slashdot. Wait, actually this was a perfect article for slashdot.
That's not actually true. The movie companies splits the box office with the theaters, and the first week is usually where the movie companies get their biggest cut, around 30%. Their share decreases over each week, so after a few weeks, the ratio reverses.
So while you'll still be paying the same, but the timing determines where that money ends up.
May whatever forces that keep us moving toward whateverness please please please put Kerry into office. Not because I think he's a better man, but he's hella better than Bush.
You seem to share same opinion with Europe, China, Cuba, Michael Moore, and Osama Bin Laden.
This "Graffiti" is nothing more than anti-Bush and pro-Kerry messages. Why is it that the summary only mentions "political messages" when it is simply partisan messages for one side?
This is just another example of slashdot shilling so hard for their side. Didn't Taco say this section was going to be fair?
Will this Graffiti technology be used for pro-Bush messages?
The Me Generation - which elected the first two presidents to have actively avoided military service (Clinton and Bush)
Bush served in the Air National Guard as a pilot, fulfilled all terms of his service and was honorably discharged. That is military service. Just because he didn't go in theatre, it still counts.
Meanwhile, Clinton fled the country to avoid any type or service.
Whose really at fault that these candidates have so little support and have no chance of being elected, the CPD? You can complain about the CPD's criteria, but you don't have a word about why they weren't eligible?
You don't even need to use search, it's just the previous story in the game section.
nobody can defend the dupe this time, since it wasn't months or years back. It's a back to back dupe, it proves the editors don't read or care about their own site.
If you guys are going to be fair with regards to politics.slashdot.org, you should try to show it soon. So far, this section still looks like indymedia for nerds(bikes against bush, f9/11, hackers at RNC).
Finally, we have some real competition to Apple's monopoly of online music stores. This is what competition is all about. Microsoft is offering higher quality music, and at lower prices.
This can only be a good thing to consumers, to have another choice. And given Microsoft's reputation at playing catchup and sprinting ahead, I would not be surprised if Apple starts running scared.
I'm concerned that in these times, the privacy advocates and other luddites just want to block any technological advances towards thwarting terrorists and other evildoers.
They want to shackle law enforcement in the name of privacy. It's clear that 'privacy concerns' have become a catch-all to dismantle any tool that may be useful to government agencies. I'm not saying they can't be used for evil, harassing the innocent isn't what its primarily used for. Evoking 'Big Brother' at every turn isn't going to help your cause. It makes you look like chicken littles.
The bottom line is that your privacy isn't worth squat if you're dead. Terrorists don't care about your privacy.
Microsoft has decided not to rush a release just for the sake of releasing it.
They want to get it right the first time. I congratulate them for doing the Right Thing and making sure they deliver a rock solid Service Pack for the millions of XP users out there.
Before the slashdot editors and crowd crow over this delay, just remember the 503 errors and flakiness this site has experienced since "maintenance" was performed. Don't throw stones in glass houses, kids.
It doesn't strike me as much of a "right" that I get to access content on my terms.
When you're in someone else's house, you play by their rules. Don't like it, don't register. Simple as that. It's on part of my rights that I get something for nothing.
And yes, it is fairly important to be able to nuke somebody before they can nuke us. The US has enemies, and defending America is the top priority of the US Government. Space travel isn't the big concern most Americans have today.
The Howard Dean campaign was an example of all hype and no substance. The man who gots lots of press from the young and hip made no impact after his campaign was over.
What success did his campaign really have? Aside from charging up the angry Bush-haters, he made no headway with the mainstream. When the primaries came, he couldn't manage to win even one. Even John Edwards came up better than Dean, and now he's the Vice-Presidential candidate.
This open-source nonsense is just that. Outside of the liberal, techy crowd, Howard Dean and his movement is a distant and faded memory.
...because he had no confidence it would be a success. "It was probably a mistake, but then you have to go with what you think at the time," he said.' "
How is this informative? The Washington Post reported the exact words Cheney used. And if you're over the age of 12, I'm sure you can figure out what the abbreviations and descriptions are referring to.
So American news sources weren't keeping anybody guessing. I just had to utterly dismantle your ignorant anti-American idiocy apart.
If I've learned one thing it's that in IS/IT/CS you either adapt and move on or you end up doing tech support on the midnight shift. Plain and simple.
I think Fred Brooks touched on it in "The Mythical Man Month" when he said that computer programming will never be a mature field because to excel in it you must always be changing your language focus.
Lets face it, all one has to do is take a quick look at the demand for certain skill sets on the net to get a pretty good feel for what's relevant today and I'm not sure c++ is anywhere on that radar screen. Most of my work as of late has been all Java and c#, with some legacy C programming done (on low level systems only of course, nobody would pay someone by the hour to have app level work done in C these days)
Sometimes I wonder when I hear people complain about how the CS industry tends to shun the old timers when the truth is that a lot of these old timers are trying to hang on to legacy technology like C++ or perl when the industry has moved onto bigger and better things.
How is this being "downplayed" if there is very little to play up?
Yes, when you take a survey, you expect people to be honest, the very few that aren't honest won't make much of a dent in distorting the picture.
Anyway, I don't know why slahsdot is playing protectionist when it comes to tech jobs in the US. You people enjoy the fruits of offshoring in cheap computers, gadgets, and other electronics. Tech jobs aren't any more sacred than manufacturing jobs. Adapt or die.
One year later, the only real change is a 2.5 Ghz, and faster Superdrive. Steve promised 3.0 12 months ago, and didn't deliver. The video cards are ancient. And only 256 MB RAM on the 2000 model?

Dear Greg,
I'll rent the truck and help you pack.
It's about time to shut down politics.slashdot.org, aka Kerry/Edwards for President.
You seem to share same opinion with Europe, China, Cuba, Michael Moore, and Osama Bin Laden.
I will vote Bush just to piss these people off.
This is just another example of slashdot shilling so hard for their side. Didn't Taco say this section was going to be fair?
Will this Graffiti technology be used for pro-Bush messages?
That is the most important question of all. On that note, I will be voting for George W. Bush.
Bush served in the Air National Guard as a pilot, fulfilled all terms of his service and was honorably discharged. That is military service. Just because he didn't go in theatre, it still counts.

Hey, why isn't this debate including everybody else running? This is an outrage!!
nobody can defend the dupe this time, since it wasn't months or years back. It's a back to back dupe, it proves the editors don't read or care about their own site.
Now this about Bush's service in the ANG? Where is your coverage of Kerry's Vietnam service? I noticed you haven't posted Kerry's medals being investigated by the Pentagon.
Whether this has merit is not the point, it's the story selection that is more interesting here.

Why is it so hard that the editors can't use the appropriate icons for them?
It's time this site starts to grow up.

And there will be even less nukes in the coming years.

No kidding, he's not alone.
Here's what our very own illustrious CmdrTaco said at the time, " No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame."
Thanks to American ingenuity and resources, we led the way to American dominance of space exploration.
God bless America!

All in all, a fairly underwhelming update.
Such as the GPL, for example? You know, the great, free-as-in-speech license that makes no warranties whatsoever? Or any OSS license for that matter.
