Good news for MS, and SE I suppose. And FF fans who already have a 360. But I just don't get the FF love. I know, I know, it's a matter of opinion. Last time I tried playing a FF demo I had to change dresses to gain powers and that was just about the most ridiculous gameplay element I'd ever experienced.

I agree with this. Everyone is criticizing Microsoft and Sony for failing to capture the casual gamer. At the same time, they're lauding the Wii for succeeding. But they fail to realize that one of the main reasons the Wii is doing so well is because the casual gamer doesn't want to spend a lot of money on something that they treat, well, casually. The price point is the big thing with the Wii, once you get past the novelty hook that puts it on so many news shows.

But does the casual gamer want to spend $50 a game? Probably not. Casual gaming will be mainly filled out by low cost games, via things like PSN, Live Arcade, and the Virtual Console. With that in mind, Microsoft arguably has one of the most attractive lineups for casual gamers out there, even exceeding Nintendo's. Casual gamers are exactly who games like Bomberman, Uno, Zuma, Catan, Poker, etc, are aimed at. Cheap titles that can be played for short periods of time and sometimes shared with friends. Sony is starting to catch up with PSN but it doesn't look like they're getting as broad a portfolio of supposedly casual games. They're continuing to play the "hardcore" card. And Nintendo, strangely, is actually currently a bit more "hard-core gamer" focused in its online initiative, given that most of its titles are old Nintendo games that only nostalgia fans would be interested in (believe me, I've tried playing them and most just don't hold up).

The shame is that Microsoft is still priced out of the casual gamer's market with the console itself. Once the 360 comes down to a mass market price, they may be a bit more capable of capturing the casual gamer market than people have been giving them credit for.

You just click on "sources" (one of the main menu options) and switch to a connected computer instead of the tv unit itself, then you can browse its itunes menu. iTunes needs to be running on the computer in question, of course.

I have a similar setup at home and while I don't mind the 360 as a media unit, it's a bit too loud to be on all the time. Same is true for my windows PC versus my mac, as well, and like you, I have too much itunes/ipod content to completely leave it behind. But the big reason is noise, though, both for the extender and the hosting computer.

Finally someone agrees with me on this. The fact that the analog sticks were thrown in there as an afterthought is easily forgotten. The only reason they're still there is because people are used to it. That doesn't mean it's good. You have to actively hold your thumbs in that position just to rest them on the sticks, before you even move them, and that's strain while doing nothing. It gets worse as you start moving them. Now that so many games take advantage of the analog sticks for 3d movement, it's become a poor design that affects 80% or so of your use of the controller.

i much prefer the other consoles, where your thumbs are in a rested, no-strain position when sitting at a ready state on the analog sticks.

There's no argument, especially if you admit that other systems have more horsepower. For example, there's no reason why Tekken couldn't be ported over to xbox. A lot of games are getting simpler, at least on consoles. Or at least easier to figure out how to play. Compare instruction manuals today to those from even 5 or 6 years ago. The instructions used to be mini-books, now they're just pamphlets with 2 or 3 pages of useful information. Look at the Madden manual from this year: 4 pages. So many games are either simpler or incorporate detailed tutorials these days that long instruction books are just being treated as a cost. Of course I find this appalling, since I so enjoy reading a good instruction manual while on the toilet.

I think far more compelling to average people is the TV set format. The picture is nice and people really enjoy it when they see it. But I think what really gets people about HDTVs is that they're usually in a format (plasma, lcd, etc.) that has significant advantages over CRTs, including widescreen (though CRT can do that), lightweight, thin, larger screens with much less associated bulk, etc. If anything will drive HD adoption, it will be when these more convenient TV types become more affordable. You don't see a lot of people buying CRT monitors these days, do you? So I think the real driver in HD adoption won't be the picture quality so much as the convenience of HD format monitors.

Regardless of what that does for HDTV, though, it doesn't really mean much to BR or HDDVD. The better picture is nice, but it's still hard to justify a whole new player and library when there aren't any convenience benefits, like portability or ease of use. If DVD had exactly the same picture and sound as VHS, it still would have replaced it. THe primary reason for its adoption was the convenience of the format. Until there's a new format that's easier to use than laser-read discs, DVD is here to stay and I think the HD formats are dead in the water.

Let's not even get into the fact that the new formats actually make things less convenient with their DRM "features". Or the fact that someone's going to tell me that my $3200 plasma TV won't work with the formats because it doesn't have an HDMI input.
