MSIE 7 May Beat Longhorn Out The Gate
Quantum Jim writes "InternetNews.com reports that a major upgrade for Microsoft Internet Explorer may be imminent. Apparently in response to the recent mass migration away from MSIE, top Microsoft developers have been soliciting for improvements in the old browser at a web log and at Channel 9, an aggregate journal previously discussed by /.. InternetNews.com speculates that improvements could possibly include support for tabbed browsing, better security, more PNG and CSS compliance, and RSS integration (which Firefox and Opera Mail already support). Actually, they aren't clueless. Most people (Normal People(TM)) honestly don't know or give a crap about standards compliance. My mom is an example. A great number of people on Guam for instance, believe that MSN and Internet Explorer are all there is to the internet. Also, security vulnerabilities aside, when ever something dominates its market (read ~90% marketshare) vulnerabilities are going to be found in any large & complex software system. You may argue that has better security practices, and it may be so. But the bottom line is that by using , you are not part of the majority, hence you are largely ignored as a target because it is not worth the virus/spyware writer's time.
Cuz, I can't imagine any other way this got modded funney.

Most people who use IE probably are using Windows, but that is by no means a requirement. Moron.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft. I've been using computers since the early 80s. Microsoft has a lot of flaws, but with each iteration of their product things get better and better. The company does TRY! On several occasions I've had to call their support. I usually bypass the first level of support and ask for level 2 or 3, but those guys try and they listen. Now if it was a nix box I wouldn't have to call, but that is the nature of the product and their market share is such that people have to speak out and point out problems to them. I applaud their efforts to improve IE even though it took so long. Remember once the slumbering giant is awake it is very tough to stop. Most people wouldn't even know what the internet was if it wasn't for Microsoft. Flamers from Apple and *nix circle are welcome, but what /.s fail to understand is that the majority of the population shits their pants if they just can't point and click. A command line is hard to a fifty or sixty year old guy. Microsoft made the net accessible to anyone.
I can also say with a great deal of confidence that the virus/spyware issue would also screw over Apple or *nix if they had a bigger share of the market. A lot easier to write exploits when the source is available. *nix and Apple have their place, but Microsoft does too so don't knock them.

Because they're trying to make computing for kindergarteners. That is why everyone knowledgeable in the computer field hates Microsoft -- they think Microsoft is insulting and condescending. But Microsoft isn't deliberately insulting or condescending; it is merely a byproduct of their attempt to market to the ignorant American (what in earlier times we called the Stupid American).
How slashdot can talk of "mass migration" from Internet Explorer, which has over 95% of the browser market, while all other browsers combined are left with a total of a measly 4%+, is beyond me.
Internet Explorer rules, and will continue to rule, Longhorn delays or not.
IE is simply the best browser out there, and consumers will continue to vote for it, by overwhelmingly choosing it!

I really dislike MS and all it stands for, because of all the evil tricks they use, like for instance, my netscape browser will run slow and "buggy", but if I start up IE (under win98SE), then it runs and scrolls no problem (it figures), MS should be made to make/sell/seprate (into independent companies, like AT&T was forced to do back in the dark days of 35 years ago when your phone was rented from the local tell company (even here in canada, 35 years ago)). for the best long term health of the PC market, we need sell off and break up MS into totally different, after all, the natural economic forces should have done that all ready (the theory being, that a given company establishes the technology, making vast amounts of money doing so (that's okay), but then once established as the standard, has to relinquish its hold on it so that everyone can benefit from the mass application (look at your light sockets/switches/wiring in your house, it's now a standard, you can buy parts at your local hardware store), if it was like MS, then your parts would be made by edisons heirs and only they would make the parts and you would constantly have to re-wire your house because the parts change every year!! Its just that economic theory (as thought up by scientists over the last 100 years), has had never had to deal with the likes of Bill and his MS running the world . If you thing MS is scary now, just wait until MS's OS's run your car/tv/sterio/vcr/house/anything you own (as far as the cars, look in the EETimes issue 1330 Mon July 19, 2004), it has a front page article on MS and Fiat developing all the new Fiats to use MS technology to run the cars, next, it will become the standard and Ford, Chrysler, GM will follow.. (oooh....scarry!!)
