Slashdotess writes "If you can't wait for the native Linux client, it seems Doom 3 can now be enjoyed under WineX. This installer is based on a guide by Rob Smith."

You dont need to be a transgaming subscriber to run Doom 3 under linux. You need to use the CVS version - which is available free for download from the transgaming website Here

Still ... would be nice to have a native version sooner!

I tried this with Cedega a couple weeks after the game was released, compared to Windows it ran terrible...but it did run
even though the frame rate was very very low 10
      The colors were off
      Sounds were ok

Since then I've shelved the game and am waiting for the native installer. Wine with this game (at least on my system) is just not worth it.

If I'm not mistaken, there were a flurry of patches to WineX in CVS since the release of the game to address some of the color issues..

I really don't think I'll be able to test this, as all I have is a P3/600, with a Radeon 7500 PCI. *laugh*

You have to wonder why you would want to do this, when the native linux client is right round the corner...

Unless you have to play it RIGHT NOW!!, of course :)

Either way, if this added that much of a technical nightmare, maybe they should have had "when its done" include "for all platforms we will support".

I have -no- problem with the distributors getting hit with a bunch of problems from such a configuration as it shows how much their markets want a non-Windows client.

John Carmack and id are not the ones staffing the support forums. It should have nothing to do with their mindset other than to be able to tell the publishers "I told you so" since most times it seems like it is the publisher, not the developers, who want to rush the Windows version out ASAP at the expense of the other "planned" platforms.

That $60 wasn't charged to staff the support forums, it was charged because they -can-. In a year it will be $30 and the same questions will be being asked by people who don't want to search for the answers. What changes in that time? Demand.

Actually, both of you are partially wrong. Doom 3 uses DirectX components (like DirectSound, DirectInput), but, instead of using Direct3d and DirectDraw, it uses OpenGL. In short, Doom 3 (win32 client) uses both DirectX and OpenGL. Just not Direct3d or DirectDraw.
