Have a Nice Steaming Cup of Java 5

wap writes "The language/VM/religion that everyone loves to hate is now serving another cup: Java 1.5 is ready for download. The new features of 1.5 have been discussed here before. I, for one, welcome our new virtual machine overlord. I have been using the release candidate, and startup times are noticeably faster, as is overall performance, and the new features like typesafe collections and static imports are great to have. Let the Java flames begin!"

Is it really Java that we love to hate, or is it the failure to live up to the "write-once, run-anywhere hype"?

Oooo but developing in C# and VS.NET with all
    that intellisense is developer paradise!!

    built-in installshield stuff, winforms. luvverly.

If Java is a cup of coffee, C#/VS is a cup of
    sweet sweet chocolate.

Yes Sun, what's wrong with you!??! You know that the poor Micro$oft users can't follow more than one link. Everything for them needs to be, big and flashing (preferably in Aero). In fact, you should make a Java Update page that will only run in IE. Oh, and Automagic Updates. That way, the poor users don't have to click anything at all.

So, how Java is not a real language, genius?

Honestly, not to start a flame war, I think most people who have used Java and C# would disagree.

I'm a full-time Java developer, have been for ages, but Java (even 1.5) has a ways to go to be as nice to work in as C#.

1.5 is a BIG jump forward, but I find it hard to believe you could be so pro Java/anti-C# if you've ever done any real development in both. At best you could six of one/half dozen of the other between them... but its hard to imagine someone thinking Java was that much better.
