Premiere of The Strangerhood
ack154 writes "As previously mentioned here, the guys and girls over at Rooster Teeth Productions (the creators of Red vs Blue) have started a new series based on the Sims 2. As of last night, Episode 1 has officially hit the download servers. Currently available in DivX, WMP, and QuickTime formats, the first episode weighs in at just over 5 minutes. " As a big RvB fan, I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes.

Bad editors! Bad!
What ever happened to them using Bit Torrent? They get burned by the release of their hi-res vids or something? As a slashdot subscriber I couldn't even download the video's during the "Mysterious Future" period.

...not downhill. Season 1 of RvB was great. I bought the DVD. After that, a lot of the jokes, themes, and storylines got tired and strained. Sometimes I wouldn't even crack a smile, let alone laugh out loud as before. I'll say one thing for Red vs Blue - it sure makes me want to play Halo almost every time I see it.

"Isn't that what babies suck on?"
"No, that's a pedophile."
"No, that;s a pacifier."
"Whoa. I was thinking of something totally different."

Agreed. Granted it's the first episode, but I hated everything from the Friends-like interstital music to the inspid white man as Mr. T attempt at comedy. It just wasn't funny, nor does it set up a good reason to watch further episodes. The writing is just... well, awful. It's not even up to My Mother The Car standards.
If it didn't have the "Rooster Teeth" name attached to it, I'd venture to say that most people wouldn't give this series another chance.
Speaking of which, I'm going to go watch a Venture Bros. episode to get the bad taste out of my head. I laugh at least once watching that which is more than can be said for the Strangerhood.

This is my first time starting a torrent, so I don't know if I did it right
Just watched the first episode, and I have to say Halo was a good choice of game, because everyone was a master chief, with a full helmet on. Facial expressions and lip syncing were blissfully bipassed and we didn't really think much about it.
This new show doesn't seem to do so well, the Sims 2 probably has some of the most expressive characters for a popular video game, but they still seem to be a little off in matching up faces, expressions and voices... IANAprofessional commedian, but not having them synced makes comedic delivery of dialog far less effective, as those brilliantly funny moments don't hit all at the same time.
I want to watch the movie, grab the controllers and take over for a while, then let the movie go back to "cruise control" until I take over again.

I would think this would be the place to do such a movie (though any popular MMORPG would have the same advantages).
The down side is having to pay a monthly fee per simultaneous actor.
OKAY WE GET IT nobody knows who they are. Must you tell us 90,000 times? You can do that while in the process of doing something else, like entertaining us. *
To kill time before NaNoWriMo, let's all make our own Sims powered sitcoms. Ready. Set. Go.
* Yes, I am being overly critical, this is what slashdot for isn't it?

This was actually one of the most painful things I have had the displeasure to watch in a long time. And I say this as a fan of RvB.(heh ok that was mean) I'm really disappointed.
Someone should inform the guys at rooster teeth that the first episode of something is supposed to set up the scene for something, and maybe introduce you to some characters. The thing that first episodes should explicitly NOT do is have the characters plaintively asking who they are and what they are doing here. THAT IS THE POINT OF THE FIRST EPISODE... to TELL us this stuff, not ask.
Sorry rooster teeth, I love some of your work, but this is utter and total crap, and it will take something really special to draw me back.
This comment is fully compliant with RFC 527.
Where am I? Why did I watch this? I've seen better scripts on the inside of my underwear.
"Where am I?" "What am I doing here?" "Who are you?"
Where did I see this plot device before? Oh, yeah! It was in Season 1 of RvB. Seems like the folks at Rooster Teeth need some new blood on their writing staff. Seems they could do a better job of just jumping right into the action with fully developed characters, instead of leading us down familiar territory.

Part of the appeal of RvB was the absurdity of seeing a soap opera/sitcom set in a battle ground. Instead of seeing people blow each other up, we watched them deal with real-life issues like personal relationships. The Sims is already a soap opera/sitcom, so what is gained by lipsyncing the characters? My daughters both play Sims2 and they are constantly showing me the world they created, explaining the characters, and forcing me to watch scenes play out. That's what watching Strangerhood felt like.
Now if Rooster Teeth could get those Sims2 characters to load up with gear and go out fragging their neighborhoods they might have a hit.

Okay, granted, the writing and Friends-style music sucked, but the production quality was pretty good.
I've got some questions, though, for anybody who's played this game and/or dabbled with machinima. I really want to buy this game just for the machinima capabilities...
1) How much of the content do you think was script first, production second? Hopefully all of it, but some of it gives the impression that they found some neat in-game animations and threw some voiceovers onto them to (try to) make them funny.
2) How did they get that guy to gesture with the hand guns in each of the rooms? Are gestures like that scriptable?
3) I understand Sims have their own language, but some of the mouth animations and postures actually looked like they matched English dialogue pretty well. Now, while I realize some of this might be related to #1, but is this movie indicative of Sims2's ability to make an English-dialogue scene?
4) Any idea how long a movie like this would take to produce?

Bleah! Heh heh heh... BLEAH BLEAH!!! Ha ha ha ha...
RvB was sort of like Mr. Bill, in that the animation (or lack of) WAS the point. The directorial skills, premise and creative cinematography is what made the RvB series. A spontaneous spark that was quirky enough to drive them to make more.
This just looks like they trying to make a computer animated sitcom/series without having to hire animators. Not going to last unless the stories hold up much better than the premiere.
Some people are like slinkys. They're useless, but it puts a smile on your face to push them down the stairs.
The theme music's good, IMHO; I like its use throughout the episode. And the opening (zoom in on keyhole) is cute, and the premise is interesting.
The voices, however, are terrible. Wade comes off sounding like he's trying to be Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, the black guy sounds like he's trying to be Mr. T, the pointing-guy looks like he's gay but sounds like a used car salesman, and the Sonny Bono guy with the burning stove has a very terrible fake accent.
The voice actors for Sam and Wade/Durnt sound like they're talking too close to their microphones. The voice recordings need to be softened a bit. And the quality of the black guy's voice is very different from the quality of everyone else's voice; he's much fainter.
The pacing is all weird, too... it needs to be tightened up. RvB had terrific pacing - it's odd to see it so off in this.
