"=== Announcing Ubuntu 4.10 'The Warty Warthog Release' ===
The warm-hearted Warthogs of the Warty Team are proud to present the very first release of Ubuntu!
Ubuntu is a new Linux distribution that brings together the extraordinary breadth of Debian with a fast and easy install, regular releases (every six months), a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of security and technical support for every release.
You get a distribution that is:
- absolutely committed to free software, every end-user application on the CD is free software
- 100% free of charge, and the Ubuntu team is committed to keeping Ubuntu free of charge
- security updates for the distribution at no charge for 18 months for any release
- updated to the latest desktop and kernel and infrastructure every six months with a new release
- supports x86, amd64 and ppc processors, with additional ports under way
If you've heard all about Ubuntu and just want to get the install CD or test the Release Candidate Live CD, you can download it here immediately: www.ubuntulinux.org/download/
If you want a shrinkwrapped CD we will gladly ship it to you at no cost. To receive a complimentary copy of the Warty Warthog CD -- or a handful to give to your friends, your school or LUG, register online at: shipit.ubuntulinux.org.
For more information, you can turn to any of the following resources:
Ubuntu Website: www.ubuntulinux.org -- The website contains some basic background on Ubuntu, an overview of the project, information on how to get it, and some documentation for the software.
Ubuntu Wiki: http://wiki.ubuntulinux.org -- The wiki is a shared web space used by the Ubuntu community to develop new ideas for Ubuntu. Anybody is welcome to edit and add to the wiki.
Ubuntu IRC Channel: #ubuntu and on irc.freenode.net. The Ubuntu IRC channel is your best place to start for help and discussion about Ubuntu and the Warty Warthog release. We aim to keep the signal-to-noise ratio as high as possible on that channel, and on all community forums.
Ubuntu Mailing Lists: Ubuntu mailing lists are the heart of our community. In addition to the announcement list, and lists for users and developers of Ubuntu, there are now Ubuntu mailing lists in German, French, Spanish as well as lists devoted to Ubuntu security, news, translators, and the inevitable lighthearted chitchat list ('the Sounder'). To get more information or subscribe, visit lists.ubuntu.com.
Warty Warthog Features:
- Simple and fast Installation. Ubuntu comes on one single CD, with thousands of extra packages available online. The install is optimised for speed and simplicity. Ubuntu has excellent support for laptops (both x86 based and Powerbook / iBook PPC based), and can also be setup in a minimalist server configuration.
- GNOME 2.8: Ubuntu was the first distribution to ship Gnome 2.8, on the day of the 2.8 release. Ubuntu is a great way to try out Gnome 2.8 if you have not already experienced its speed and simplicity.
- Firefox 0.9 (with security patches)
- First-class productivity software Evolution 2.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2
- XFree86 4.3 with improved hardware support
We also worked hard to detect as much hardware as possible, simplifying the X install considerably.
Warty can be installed in a minimalist mode for servers, or in full desktop mode. It works well on laptops and desktops. Warty is secure by design - a key goal was to ensure that Warty was as safe from attack over the internet as possible after a default install.
Thanks to the team of professional and volunteer maintainers who have worked so hard to bring the Warthog to life, and also to our rapidly growing community, who have provided excellent testing and ideas for the future of Ubuntu!
'Ubuntu' is an ancient African word for 'humanity towards others,' and we think it's a perfect name for an open source community project. In that spirit we invite you to join, to contribute and to share Ubuntu with your own community. Our next release, the Hoary Hedgehog, is due in six months' time. You can help to shape it by joining the team and contributing your own expertise. See you at #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net."
The final release does not use the controversial theme by default. It's been replaced with something more similar to the earlier previews.
But I wonder if they imagined that they would be slashdotted, wonder how many who will recive all those CD's. I ordered 10 for x86 and 5 for PPC :) Like a stealthy ninja I will try to install it and share it with as many as possible!
I fought the corporate America, and the corporate America bought the law.
We listened to the community, held a community meeting about the artwork, and went with what the community suggested: namely to use less controversial images for the GDM theme, the gnome-session splash, and the desktop wallpaper. We certainly didn't refuse to listen.
Actually, that's not true...

There was a community meeting on IRC on Monday at which everyone got to put their viewpoint and consensus was to keep the themes available but not to make them the defaults.

New artwork was created and uploaded for the final release, the default GDM theme is plainer and without the three friends on it.

The screenshot links posted were actually from our Preview and Release Candidate releases, not the real thing.
Actually, none of the previous previews have used the controversial theme by default. It only happened to people who had installed one of the earlier previews (dont remember which), changed to the "human" theme and then dist-upgraded into rc1.
At least that's how I understood it, I could be wrong though.
^^
You're probably confused because the image on the Ubuntu site is not updated yet.
I cannot claim that I am running it ATM, but from the screenshots in the article http://osdir.com/shots/slideshows/slideshow.php?re lease=152&slide=34, (which I notice is still the RC) the default GDM theme is the One That Shall Not Be Named.
However, further perusal of the mailing list archive reveals that they had a community meeting on the 18th of Oct, and they decided to change the artwork to something without images, and proveded the "Circle of Friends" GDM theme as an alternative.
Kudos to Ubuntu! (Bads to me for not reading the whole archive!)
I was speaking only to the GDM theme, not the Gnome theme, which you are correct on. The GDM theme was the default for the RC of Warty.
Yup. My bad. Please refer to my post http://linux.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=126420&t hreshold=-1&commentsort=0&tid=162&mode=thread&pid= 10577460#10577655
I don't understand... what's the controversy about? I don't see anything controversial on the ubuntu page.
I've had enough abrasive sigs. Kittens are cute and fuzzy.
How long will the free CD's last?
Do they take donations or what?
that isn't true. They included it but it isn't the default anymore. I don't mind that at all.
They won my heart with this release. I'm a long time slackware/dropline gnome user but this distro takes the best out of Debian coupled with the latest kernels and Gnome. I had never tried Debian before because the packages were too slow but I have no complaints with this distro!
Completely false information. The issue was resolved before the final release.

Well I dont understand why they still use Xfree when xorg is so much better and their isnt a license issue. oh well, i should give this distro a try to see if they sped up things over gentoo, Highly doubt it.

I got the RC iso of ubuntu and thought I would try the torrent file of the final on the RC. Turns out they are 21.7% identical...
:)
Strange but true
They will be switching to X.org for the next release.
I don't understand... what's the controversy about?

Look at their eyes in that photo. What is the photographer suggesting subliminally? The cracker chick is looking at you, and the male is distracted by the negro chick.
" I ordered 10 for x86 and 5 for PPC :) "
WTF? You know you can order one of each and make copies right?
Instead, you go and order 15 CD's, costing them more money, and probably contributing to the end where they finally say "okay, no more free CD's."

So where do I find screen shots of this theme that upset so many people?
I can't seem to find one on the comments on this article
"Live Free or Die." Don't like it? Then keep out of the USA
People need to see this. They can't ignore it.
click me
Damn, now I have ANOTHER reason to use this distro.
Nice taste in theme design.
Very cool.

Hey dude, you know they DEFAULT to ordering 10 x86 CDs? It says right there on the page that shipping costs more than the CDs. Easy on the attack there champ.
whoa, i guess a non-white person must have peed in someone's cherioes this morning.

Nope, not really. Its just getting really tiresome to have everything made into some 'politically correct' cultural issue..
Having an election coming around the corner has made it that much worse..

my above flame-fanning notwithstanding, you've actually got me wondering.
/bad/ thing - as polical correctness undoubtably is?
/is/ a multicultural city. thus it makes sense to me to see people or different colours on posters for city services, for example.
how did we go from multicultural to politically correct? when did the inclusion of multicultural imagery become a
i have a theory, personally. there is no such thing as "political correctness" - it's an idea that gets thrown around when people don't want to acknowledge that either a) they're being overly sensitive to something dumb or b) they are being racist / sexist / otherwise assholeish.
in other words: you can abuse the term "pc" in both directions - by making mountains out of molehills or by trying to get away with real discrimination.
which brings me back to the discussion at hand. i live in a city (toronto) where 55% of the population are members of "visible minorities", and where 45% of the population was born outside the country (canada). it
in this case, the very word that is used as the distro name means "humanity to others". well, good morning, "humanity" is rather colourful. thus, i'm having trouble seeing how the IMO beautiful imagery that the ubuntu developers chose is a matter of making things a "'politically correct' cultural issue".
perhaps you can enlighten me. i see the term "politically correct" used in this context often enough to want some further insight into it, because as i explained above, i think it's a straw-man excuse for a) whining or b) discrimination.
just my $0.02, now worth almost $US0.017.
