NASA Considering Early Retirement of Shuttle Program

Rei writes "While publicly assuring the public that it has no plans to do so, leaks have indicated that NASA has been quietly investigating plans to get rid of the Space Shuttle as soon as possible, and finish the International Space Station with disposable rockets, even as NASA works on achieving Return to Flight in 2005."

Not really, you could "privately assure the public", I suppose, if you called everyone individually.

For example, Governor A-Hole was kind enough to call me at 11:30 PM last night to let me know how important it was to go out and vote for him on tuesday. I had no idea our governor was a tape recorder. American politics are fascinating. Chalk up write-in vote for Pee Wee Herman.

Like the droids in Starwars, in the escape pods with the plans to the Deathstar!

If only the gunner on the star destroyer had shot down the pod on general principles... Luke wouldn't have found R2D2, he wouldn't have met Obi-Wan and joined the Rebels, the Death Star would have destroyed Yavin and the Empire would have won. It's chaos theory, one tiny change and the whole of history is different!

Now, if you'll excuse me I have some chocolate coated spongy biscuits with a smashing orangey bit to attend to.

Stamped steel construction is more akin to Sputnik era technology than today's. It is, however, rather cheap to mass produce, and thus more likely to be inside of people's budgetary constraints

I suppose we could also debate what 'more' means. I do not believe it means 'identity.'

I was speaking of the McLaren F1 road car, not the F1. Yes, confusing, I know, but I wished to compare apples to apples (apples are thin skinned. Oranges are not. Hah! And they said it couldn't be done).

I suppose I could have spoken of the Ferrari Enzo, but my mommy always told me that if you can't say anthing nice don't say anything at all.

You'll note that I did not use the term 'modern' anywhere in my post, because I do not accept that modern equates with an advance in technology.

Nor do I necessaritly accept that deisel engines represent a modern technological step.

It is a fine little engine though, and as I believe I've posted once before, I am currently doing some engineering consulting for a startup firm that intends to produce sports car 'specials' based around it, as well as promoting the use of biodiesl fuel (which may come as something of a shock to those who remember some of my posts about biodiesel. I am perfectly capable of pointing out the serious flaws in a concept and still be congnizant, and supportive, of its benefits. An engineer who cannot criticize is not merely worthless, but downright dangerous).
