Nintendo DS Release Date Moved?

galaxy300 writes "Apparently, the Nintendo DS is being released one week earlier than previously expected, on November 15th. Gamestop has updated the release information on their website, and there is discussion on the official Nintendo boards." Update: 11/10 16:52 GMT by Z : In the time it took for this story to crawl onto the games page, the Gamestop link was corrected and reposted with the original ship date. Hence the "?" in the original title. Sorry to get your hopes up.

Yup, it is true. Although, with Nintendo expecting to only have 1 million of them available before Christmas, these are likely to quickly sell out - especially given that many stores have stopped taking pre-orders.

I sent an email to EBGames asking about what kind of deal they might have going on a trade-in of a GBA SP for a Nintendo DS. If I could get a DS for ~$80, I'd take it. Nothing back from them as of yet.

Since they're probably already out-of-stock and you didn't preorder it yet, chances are you won't be hearing from them.

I ended up getting $48 for my GBA SP, but I traded it in last week to hopefully get a better price over at Gamestop. It'll probably be about $40 once the DS comes out. Not bad though considering new ones are going for $79.99 which means used ones will be going for $59-$69.

It could have a scheduled release a year from now and it won't be a big deal to me. After finding out that the backwards compatability stops at GBA titles, I've lost a lot of interest in the thing. Most of my favorite titles are from the Gameboy and it's Color cousin...

Unless those clever dickens over in Hong Kong come up with a utility that plays older carts, I may just give the DS a miss.

I don't know. I think the new features outweighs the need to play 10 year old black and white games. Keep your GB color around and/or your SP and go with a DS. Yes it is nice to have a library of thousands at launch but look at the innovation your getting with a DS.

For the same reason the ps2 is backwards compatible: I can sell the old one and only have to carry the new one around. Fortunately for me, I've already exhausted the DMG games, and the end is near for the GBA. The most appealing GBA games would be the ones that need what the DS is lacking -- link support. It would be great to play Advance Wars with someone who doesn't have a DS, but the link port has been removed in favor of new technology.

This is why Nintendo says its not a replacement for the gameboy. It doesn't look or sound true, but there is some confirming evidence. The DS is missing the term "gameboy," one of Nintendo's most enduring brands (it's survived the Politically Correct movement, after all). If its a third tier of gaming, they're killing off the second tier. There's no gameboy successor in the wait. If the DS takes off, GBA games will wane in scope and sales, and ultimately, new titles. Whether trading one tier for another is the same as a next generation, you can decide.

Anyone else noticed how odd of a release date the 21st is? That's a Sunday. Considering most delivery trucks don't run on Sunday, they're either getting the system on Saturday, in which case they'll probably start selling it early (like the Gamecube sold early), or the 21st is a placeholder date, and they're not real sure when it's going on sale.

I've been thinking about that too, but if you look at the different-shaped GBA and old-style GBC/GB carts, you'll see that a slot could be made to accept a GBA game but a GBC one physically wouldn't slide in. Nobody who's got their hands on a DS has revealed whether that's the case or not, at least to my knowledge.

I hope the physical limitation isn't there, so that a future DS card with emulation software on it could make classic GB/GBC games playable on the DS, but it wouldn't surprise me greatly if the old carts physically just don't fit. The fact that the DS plays GBA games at all is a little confusing, since it's supposed to be a third platform and not a replacement. I personally think it will serve as a replacement anyway, and in that case, one-generation backwards compatibility is better than none, but that's been one of the really cool things about Game Boy over the years -- all the old stuff would just work with newer sleeker systems.

Anyhow I'm just rambling at this point, but I would advise not to get your hopes up for emulation until you hold a DS in your hands and verify that you can physically stick a GBC game into it.
