Jon Bringing WMV9 to Linux

julie-h writes "DVD Jon has done it again. This time it wasn't Apple the target, but Microsoft's WMV9 video format. There is as always a working Proof of Concept program with screenshots."

The only whining I see in this thread is from you.

Nobody is complaining about it; they are merely responding to the parent poster regarding possible reasons people are surfing slashdot even though it is thanksgiving night in the US.

What is your problem? It is a warring president calling on the main war god - nothing wrong with that - it is in perfect harmony with 1679 years of christian tradition and about 1000 years of jewish and greco-roman tradition before that.

It really wouldn't be that hard for Microsoft to release a generic codec pack for Linux.
It also wouldn't be worth their time to diddle around making a codec that only 1% of computer users would use. And they sure as heck aren't going to provide the source, because Microsoft doesn't believe in free (as in the FSF def'n of free) software. What's the point?
Then after you factor in that binary compatibility isn't worth a damn in the Linux world, and even if MS released a binary codec for Linux it wouldn't work for long (assuming the usual upgrade cycle), I'd say that the Win32 codecs we've got right now are perfectly OK.
Not to mention that it's almost impossible to make a program run nicely on each of the billions of distros out there anyways. Maybe I'm just a little bitter after all..
