EA_Spouse Forum Becoming Thriving Community
An anonymous reader writes "Kotaku has a story about the EA_Spouse Live Journal, which has become its own community of sorts, fostering endless rumors and gossip about EA culture. The site has more than 3,500 replies to the original diatribe post and grows daily. The latest finds include a link to an NPR story on the whole EA fiasco (the NPR reporter trolled the board for interviews) and copies of the contracts for Senior Vice President of Human Resources Rusty Rueff and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial & Administration Officer Warren Jenson. When is a T-shirt coming out?"
Here's a link to the NPR story that was mentioned.
Yeah, I have a webcomic...
What would it say? My husband worked himself to death coding a physics engine and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt?
Against stupidity the Gods themselves contend in vain.
I thought that "leaked" internal memo previosly mentioned meant that EA was going to change all of this and pay overtime and allow normal work hours.

Seriously, have you ever played Madden football? It kicks ass. Definitely worth it to me that these guys are over worked.
move along, nothing to
Actually, some friends have the theory that EA Spouse is...a MAN, baby!
But that, still doesn't excuse how much of an ass you are. It's not just her that's complaining, there are several other people who are coming out named, and talking about how awful this company is.

PS. I figured that out from the way you misspelled "Labor."
Yeah, go tell the prime minister of britain that his party bought the wrong domain:

Livejournal has a 5000-comment limit. She may have to actually make a second post...
My Journal
is this a website to find bored, lonely housewives looking for a good time?
LOL. "I'm not a troll. I'm only trying to provoke a response out of people with an inflamatory position!"
I guess you're arguing for Flamebait then?
Yeah, it eludes me what they are talking about though. I can accept it when someone quits and then complains about it, to 'warn' others. Those folks on the other hand just don't accept what it entails if you work a job that is a dream to plenty of talented young people across the world. Seriously, what is wrong with the world when people in prestigious positions, earning shitloads of money get to complain about 'exploitation' to a mass audience? I've seen EA compared to a sweatshop on numerous sites and that is outragious too. No matter what the conditions at EA are, it can't be a sweatshop because people that actually work in sweatshops are quite greatful that they can earn a living at all, instead of just starving.

To answer your question: a troll isn't a stupidly spelt and worded question. A troll is a, usually insincere, posting designed to attract emotional responses. You can certainly post something you fundamentally agree with while still retaining troll status. For example, a posting demanding, obnoxiously, the outlawing of abortion posted in a feminism group, or against the death penalty in a redneck forum, would usually be classed as a troll.
I'd say the words "Cry me a fucking river" coupled with the posting of an unsympathetic inflamatory body shows, to me, you wanted people to get pissed at you and respond emotionally, so I'd say what you wrote was a troll. A non-troll would have probably been worded as "I understand their frustraition, but these people should probably change jobs rather than complain constantly on forums like Slashdot."
Same view. Different way of putting it. One's a troll, the other isn't. See the difference?
Netjak.com is running an interview with the aforementioned spouse today.

yeah, flamebait would be more appropriate if my opinion doesn't pass the tolerance test on slashdot. Ahh, why do I even bother. I had karma to burn anyways.
Also, about the 'provoke a response' thing. How is that bad? I can't think of a single statement, oral or written in the history of mankind that wasn't tailored to 'provoke a response'.

The T-Shirt
Here's the thing, they're comparing this job at EA to other jobs they've had in the industry that are that same dream for the talented youth you mention. The conditions there suck ass, and they're trying to warn the doe-eyed youth from being driven to the slaughter.
The people there have pointed out how EA is driving for a younger, more naive work force that they can suck the life out of for 2-5 years then jettison, like a disposable booster rocket. These aren't positions of prestige in any way, shape or form. When the people in the office look down on you, and you can't get out of the office to show people how cool you are...there is no prestige gained from all of it.
The sweatshop comparison IS outrageous, just as Latrell Sprewell's, "I gotta feed my family" comment was. So, excise the exaggeration from the articles you're reading, and look for the legitimate stuff. This isn't a story that should just die yet...change needs to made first.

sorry about the 'y' thing. In my 10 years of speaking, writing and listening to english I never managed to use 'mayority' vs 'majority' correctly. Same goes for 'live' and 'life'. It's just a disablity, I think ;)
You are right, it was certainly inflamatory. But there is a mod option for that too, that's my point.

So, basically EA pays less than other developers? Well, see, there is your solution.
I never bought the whole 'suck the life from the young'uns' line. Thing is, whatever job you take when you start your professional career you have to make up for your laking experience. This is often done through long hours or less money. Well, the market pays for experience. That is certainly not a big suprise. And, unless EA enters the business of selling human flesh, there is no way that they take something out of the young people. If you're in your twenties, you are very fit to work harder than what is average. Also, compare that seemingly sad tale to lawyers that have to spend truckloads of money before they can even start working and when they do, 80 hour weeks are commonplace until they actually become partners. I don't see many 'advocates_spouse' blogs, why is that?
I want argue about the prestige since that is obviously a question of taste. In my view it is, no matter how much they get out.

80 hour weeks are commonplace until they actually become partners. I don't see many 'advocates_spouse' blogs, why is that? But who can drum up sympathy for lawyers? Programmers, OTOH, are people!
Changa hates change.
Because lawyers keep quiet. But really, is there any reason to? Just because it's a standard in a completely different industry doesn't mean it has any application whatsoever.
/End disparaging lawyer/doctor comment.
Lawyers are also generally shady people, and like doctors, realize they can get any piece of arm candy they want, and their wives are golddiggers. So there's no love there. The wife doesn't give a crap whether advocate comes home on time...so long as he buys her a car.
Also, the market doesn't pay for experience. You have a much easier time entering as a cheap employee than you will as entering being an experienced one with a salary history. EA ends up paying you less after all the hours they force you into. What EA Spouse is complaining about is a combination of the long hours, and the lack of compensation for the overtime they're forced to work.

Worst. Site. Ever.
Review your stories that link to Kotaku, every one is absolute garbage.
It's not that your opinion itself wasn't "Slashdot-appropriate." Plenty of people have taken the position that EA employees are paid according to supply and demand. Plenty of people have said that they should switch jobs if they don't like their current employment. But they're not getting modded down.
Your post was modded down because...
Dumbest. Argument. Ever. The fact that you try to use it shows that you're either continuing to troll or honestly don't grasp the distinction between encouraging thought and inciting emotional outbursts.

The difference is what you're trying to provoke. Are you trying to provoke discussion, or are you trying to provoke anger? One is constructive. The other is destructive.
You got and/or lost me at "Cry Me a Fucking River"....

I hope the AC means that the NPR reporter trawled the board for interviews.
I mean, I'm sure trolling it would work, but it doesn't quite seem to fit as responsible journalism...
Repton.
They say that only an experienced wizard can do the tengu shuffle.
You pedantic fuck. Limey means a fucking British "person." If you don't know what you're talking about, shut the fuck up.
Because it's not on the subject of EA dumb-ass. Please stop posting on Slashdot. We all hate you.
What would it say?
How about:
"My husband makes over 85,000 a year, and I have nothing to do so I stay home and bitch because he has to work overtime. Maybe if he made less money I would have to work and wouldn't have time to whine like a 2$ whore".
That is what it should say, but I guess that is a bit long to be on a T-Shirt.
I never bought the whole 'suck the life from the young'uns' line. Thing is, whatever job you take when you start your professional career you have to make up for your laking experience. This is often done through long hours or less money
This is probably the most insightful post made on this story, and yet it won't be modded up because slashdot has turned into a communist website.
jesus! I REPLIED to an other post! How the FUCK can that be offtopic?
Because you aren't a communist. Therefor you sir are off topic.
PS-Please keep posting, it's nice to have a break from the groupthink.
It's not that your opinion itself wasn't "Slashdot-appropriate."
...it's that your post was gratuitously insulting to anyone who disagreed with you. ..
.it makes a threat of physical violence against the author of the original EA_spouse post.
...it's sexist as hell.
Sure it was, it's the typical slashdot groupthink.
Plenty of people have taken the position that EA employees are paid according to supply and demand.
Yeah and THEY have been modded down too. There is clearly a liberal bias on slashdot, both from the admins and users.
Plenty of people have said that they should switch jobs if they don't like their current employment. But they're not getting modded down.
I suggest you go back and look at the modding on the other EA stories.
Your post was modded down because...
Bullshit, plenty of posts like that get modded up. Hell how many anti-republican, anti-business posts that are horribly insulting get modded up?
Big deal, it was obviously a fucking joke. How many 'threats of violence' have been made against the American president alone here on slashdot? But that is ok, because the group think agrees with it right?
How the FUCK is that sexist? He said he was going to punch the EA spouse in the face. First off, we don't know if the mystery spouse is a man or a women. Secondly if it WAS a women and he punched her in the face it wouldn't be sexist. It would be sexist if he only punched the spouse in the face if it were a man. Right? You do understand what sexism really is don't you?
He didn't say, I'd only punch the spouse in the face if it were a women, that would be sexist.
Dumbest. Argument. Ever. The fact that you try to use it shows that you're either continuing to troll or honestly don't grasp the distinction between encouraging thought and inciting emotional outbursts.
Hey, your post was just gratuitously insulting to the original author. You are trolling. Don't worry, you won't get modded down komrade.
Hint: All communications are designed to provoke response. Not all communications are designed to provoke the same response, and not all responses are equally useful or worthwhile.
That explains your posting history.
PS- your "Web design skills" deserve -5 fish.
PSS-Bryce is the gayest name ever. Seriously, it's gayer than AIDS.
Hmm. Can't take the karma hit? Start posting anonymously.
After ignoring those things which are simple restatements of earlier claims and gratuitous insults, there are only two things in your response that even remotely warrant a rebuttal.
First, the claim that I'm the one who doesn't understand what sexism is. What part of "punch her in the face", or "Don't you get it? You scare your husband away, you whiney broom" was I supposed to interpret as gender neutral? You assumed that EA_spouse was a woman, someone called you on it, and now instead of admitting you made an unwarranted assumption, you try and pretend you never made the assumption.
The other thing I would like to address is your belief that, because it happens frequently, threats of violence are harmless so long as they occur over the Internet. Now, I've never once seen an actual threat against the safety of the President on Slashdot, because most everyone here knows that making such a threat is just begging for a Secret Service visit. If you find a threat against POTUS as egregious as the one you made, I guarantee you that pointing it out to the SS will get the author in deep trouble.
Whatever the medium, whoever the target, such threats are wrong. Not just impolite. Not just counterproductive. They are morally reprehensible. If you make such a threat, even in jest, it's a form of intimidation, and you're probably doing it because you're not smart enough to present your position reasonably.
In closing, please tell me your first name so that I can tell you how gay it is, and show me some examples of your web design work so I can give them -5 fish.
