Playing the Game Boy DS Online
Torrey Clark writes "NitroOnline is a project that is currently being developed that will allow Nintendo DS owners to play Wireless enabled games via the internet. It will require a wireless router, and a wireless card in your PC or laptop to communicate with your Nintendo DS."
It's called the Nintendo DS. I don't see where the "Game Boy" words came from, but that is not what it is called.
Nintendo DS is NOT a GameBoy. Nintendo has repeeatedly said that the next GameBoy will be out at some point in the future, and Nintendo DS is intended as a 3rd pillar. It's incorrect to describe it as a GameBoy.
And secondly, the Warp Pipe guys aren't the only ones doing this. The Xlink people are also in development of tunneling software.
Tunneling the traffic doesn't mean you can run your own code. Unless nintendo creates a telephony app for the system, you won't be able to use it as a VoIP phone. The difference between playing it online and playing it simply amongst a local 'pod' of users, is that the traffic is intercepted and tunneled across the wired internet; Where as the ability to play against your local 'pod' depends on the availability of other DS's. For this particular application, There is no modification on the DS side of things.
These guys have been making claims that can not be accomplished, such as 100% compatability and the project was supposed to be fully released 8 days after anouncing it. Their newest claim is compatibility with all prism based cards and their release date has been pushed back for an unknown reason. I have heard rumors that they got as far as receiving a signal from their DS, but can not figure out the encryption. The fact is this project is nothing but a bunch of 12 year olds begging for programmers in the warppipe forums and every now and then they wonder over to the xlink forums and start some flamewars. The thing here is tho, is that WiFi only describes layer 1 and 2, nothing beyond. Therefor the DS is fully WiFi compliant, however, it is not implementing a TCP/IP stack. This will have to be done on a per-software basis (each game). Remember, things like NetBEUI and IPX/SPX still work over WiFi connections, and those have nothing at all to do with TCP/IP communication. Nintendo's own protocol is a layer 3 and up protocol, not a layer 1/2 protocol.
Please refere to the OSI Model if you are confused about any of this.
