Severe Everquest 2 Downtime Over the Weekend
thebostonblogger wrote in to alert us that Everquest 2 experienced almost 24 hours of downtime this weekend. The development team eventually resorted to hourly updates to keep the players informed and to reduce the number of overturned cars. According to John Smedly's note there will be a period of accelerated xp gain this week to offset the downtime this weekend. Commentary available from usual suspects Terra Nova and Grimwell Online.
It's an attempt to "make good" for the downtime. No, the game doesn't need it. This has more to do with keeping/appeasing customers today than any sort of long-term in-game economy issues.
WoW! 24 hours of downtime?!? That's too much. If only there was another recently released game with that sort of "WoW" factor.

In other news thousands of individuals report suffering from blindness after walking out of their homes and seeing the snow.
I do not think that means what you think that means.
They've already announced that they will be offering free time as well as accellerated experience gain. Why the slashdot summary ignored that is beyond me.
Over the weekend there were scattered reports of pale, sunken-eyed zombies wandering around. Witnesses said they appeared to be in some sort of stupor and mostly just spent their time shielding their eyes from the sun and groaning something that sounded like "logginserverdown".
What I find so utterly hilarious about the concept is that you are making people happy by rewarding them with not having to play as much.
Aka, the game is a chore, alleviating some of that chore makes people happy. Being able to pull a situation where people pay for that is pure genius.
Accelerated XP gain makes no sense.
They've tipped their hand. Now, whenever anyone has an issue connecting, experiences any bug at all, etc, they will ask that their XP be accelerated. And when they don't grant it they're going to look like the bad guys.
What do you expect these guys to do while they can't play EverCrack? Go outside? Read a book (besides guidebooks for EQ)?
This is simply unacceptable from a MMORPG. Shocking, really. I hope someone gets fired.

What's the point of using acronyms when you have to type out the whole phrase anyways?
HAH! Don't confuse D&D geeks with EverCrack geeks.
;)
True D&D geeks don't play MMO"RP"Gs because we realize that you can't get true non-linear, non-level-grinding gaming when a computer is in charge, for no other reason than the massive amount of fresh content you'd need constantly.
It takes a socially inept GM and a case of Mt. Dew to give you that.
