Do you wonder why apparently rational Slashdot users would use their .sig line to push an offer that seems little more than a thinly veiled pyramid scheme? Answers to these questions can be found in this NYT article (personal information, with no free iPod, is required). The plan itself seems simple. Rat out your friends to advertisers, and get a free gadget. The firm in question, Gratis, Inc, gets a bounty on each customer. The firm claims to have a revenue of $15 million in 2004. They claim to give away 500 iPods a week. If, as the article claims, each contact earns a bounty of around $50, we might presume that 1 in 12 contacts get a free iPod. This firm seem fairly upfront. Another firm mentioned in the article, Consumer Research Corporation, seems much less so. As always, read the fine print."

Why do people bother asking me why I have this in my sig? Nobody seems to be able to put 2 and 2 together and see why I spend my mod points this way. So now, if you advertise your freeipod link, you're spamming people directly and indirectly.
I joined for the free ipod deal. I don't see what all the fuss is about. The "affiliates" you have to sign up with are reputable companies that aren't going to start charging your credit card on a whim (e.g. AOL, Infone, Ebay, etc). And yes, you'll get a ton of spam on your email address...isn't that was throwaway accounts on yahoo or gmail are for? Is it a pyramid scheme? Of course it is. Gratis wouldn't be making any money if everyone got a free ipod just for signing up and doing nothing. Is it a scam? Absolutely not. I have several friends that have already gotten their ipods.
I haven't gotten my ipod yet, but I'm not particularly nervous about the prospect of whether or not I get one. I haven't spent any money, and my two main email accounts for friends and associates are perfectly free of Gratis spam.
What's the problem here?

Oooh, I'm fucking scared. You don't get a choice as to what you mod or meta mod, so the chances of you actually seeing something that was modded down AND knowing the reason is about nil.

GNAA more effective than Viagra, Cialis, study finds
WASHINGTON, DC (GNAA) - A thoroughly scientific study undertaken by researchers at the Beth Israel Hospital has concluded that membership in Internet troll group GNAA is more effective than Viagra or Cialis, competing brands of erectile dysfunction drugs, in achieving a lasting rigid penis and thoroughly enjoyable penetration.
Subjects were given access to a cable modem, a Windows-compatible PC and the movie "Gayniggers From Outer Space," a 1992 low-budget romp in which homosexual African-American extraterrestrials invade earth and eliminate women in order to expose men to the wonders of anal intercourse. The control group of men picked randomly from the general population experienced less success with both Viagra and Cialis. "We gave them a selection of stimulating pornography from Jewish-American actresses like Jenna Jameson and Pamela Anderson," said research associate Miriam Rothberg, "but mostly, they complained that the women whined too much."
"There's something about violent, masculine, assertive, and sticky gay sex that appeals to the modern gentile," Silverstein opined. "The corporate wonder drugs, Viagra and Cialis, could not match these erections, even when we ordered them from the paradise of open-mindedness and tolerance that is modern Canada."
Added Rothberg, "These cocks are so rigid we could submit them as alternate WTC designs." She added that she was "somewhat concerned and perplexed" by the lack of attention given to her as a female associate during this study.
A visit to the lab revealed the chaos of this experiment. "Back, female creature!" said test subject Eugene Maryland. "Only ass is true!" Rothberg calmed him with an injection of testosterone.
