  1. "almost as"? The US doesn't have wank licenses, at least not yet.

  2. Europe is pretty secular and enlightened now as the left keeps reminding us and they still want to lay this at all the feet of da ebil christians hiding behind every tree in atheist Europe whenever things happen that don't fit their simple narrative. Truth is puritanism is not exclusive to any creed, its more a chararacteristic that walks hand in hand with authoritarianism as we're finding out as feminism and secular thinkofthechildrenism assumes the mantle of the primary defender of puritan values in modern society.

I never said the company itself wanted to be a neutral carrier, I said a large group of people prefer a wild west internet over a controlled limited corporatized internet. That was the prevailing model before companies like Google formed an oligopoly and switched from taking advantage of the free internet, to clamping down on it for ideological and financial reasons. Google/Facebook/Amazon etc want the internet to be like a tv channel, thats why they characteristically overreact to every new internet 'safety' or 'fake news' scandal, knowing it empowers the mob. The only roadblock as far as tech companies are concerned is characteristic corporate laziness and inertia.

  6. Dilemma on Is the Golden Age of YouTube Over? (theverge.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

Youtube, and all the social media/market place tech companies are caught between those who want more freedom and less censorship and for them to behave as a passive neutral channel of goods and information and those who want more 'safety' and control and proactive regulation of content. Sometimes you have the exact same people demanding both. But you can't have it both ways, control of fake news inevitably will spill over to shutting down alternative news outlets, hysteria about pedos means no comments at all on any video with a kid walking into frame. Censorship of offensive content inevitably morphs into censorship of unpopular opinions. Forget net neutrality. This is what will determine what our future internet will look like. We as a society will have to choose, we can either have a bland 'safe' corporatized internet that is essentially an al la carte TV channel or we can have the wild west Internet and whatever it will grow into in the future it all its terrible glory and freedom. Google, governments, and the other companies favor the former option, are we going to stop them?

The political sections of Wikipedia are already a joke, even compared to a few years ago. The current popular game is to fish Google for negative references or bylines to a (usually conservative) person or organization the editor doesn't like and then use it to frontload the beginning of their article with negative information. Then the change is etched in stone because it came from the 'reliable' NYT its automatically the consensus no matter how obscure or widespread it is.

  12. Yup, the SSM debate has nothing to do with rights and everything to do with titles and perception. (Nearly) everybody was fine with giving SS couples equal legal standing, the real battle was over the name. One side wanted a certain image of marriage in the mind of society to be certified as the 'true' definition by government hammer, the other tried to stop them unsuccessfully. This was all about perception and the subsequent direction society would be pushed because of it.

  13. Marriage of children, animals, and objects is not sensible because none of them can provide legal consent.

So, if you're looking for a clear line---here it is. On the other hand, if you're just trying to justify your bigotry... don't bother. No justification will make it less repulsive.

Who says animals can't consent? Did you personally go out and get the opinion of every one? Also there are plenty of children who 'consent' in the generic sense of the word. Ever heard of Mary Kay Letourneau and the tons of boys banging their high school teachers? Only by going back and doing an ad hoc redefinition of the 'consent' do you separate them from the other stuff society is fine with. Its just as easy to argue that people engaging in a homosexual relationship are deranged and don't know what they're doing and a 17 year old boy banging his 25 year old teacher is fine as the reverse and society can and has done so on several occasions.

If it was Asians predominantly around wherever crime and police tend to hang around, they'd be gunned down in similar numbers. Men are gunned down far more than women, yet you'd never admit that as a sign that society favors women. Plenty of whites get gunned down, the other day a white man was shot for playing with a garden hose and nobody cried for him.

  25. All the Marvel movies I've seen in the past couple years have been generic and boring AF. Based upon what I've been reading from reviews from nonpartisan reviewers about this movie, it itself doesn't really have much of any politics but its also fairly generic. I just think the whole MCU and superhero genre is now tired and played out at this point with a gabillion samey movies for over a decade now. I guess its not to much of a stretch that initial ticket sales could be high since the general population is largely ignorant of any of the politicking on either side and will gobble anything up to a certain extent if its hyped enough. I mean this is the same crowd that turned out for phantom menace. But its not really any more indication of quality or a 'victory' any more than the reviewbombing.
