Yahoo, Apache, Ebay, Amazon, Netscape Celebrate 10 Year Anniversaries

tagish writes "Roy Fielding writes on the Apache dev mailing list: 10 years ago today, the Apache Group decloaked with the creation of the new-httpd archive and initial accounts on hyperreal.org. I had the lucky timing of having the first message archived on the list, though we had actually been talking about what to do for at least a week before that (sadly, without any archives)." At the same time, Mike Porter simply writes "Yahoo celebrates its tenth anniversary on March 2nd." News about some other anniversaries available via an MSNBC article.

After three months of owning the sportscar, a drunken uninsured pensioner ran a red light, smashed into a bus and ricocheted off into the front of my car.

The police turned up and breathtested and questioned both me and the idiot. Onlookers (there were many eyewitnesses) were shocked to see me get breathtested. They had seen that I was simply waiting at the lights.

The dudes who fixed my car took over two months to complete the work. I was screaming down the phone towards the end of that.

A few months later a woman tried to do a hit-n-run on me. Lucky I got her numberplate because my rear bumper and rear panel cost around $1800 to fix IIRC.

A year or so later, on a particularly windy night the entire roof and ceiling of the apartments next door came off and landed on my car. This one ended up being put down as "My Fault" because it was apparently an "Act of God(tm)". I had never realised before then that I was, indeed, God.

I just thought those little anecdotes might put a genuine smile on your dial at your time of woe and envy. You are most welcome.

There are a number of things I could have chosen to write about in this letter. I could have chosen to write about how you don't need to look far to see that Slashdot has values that are antagonistic to a traditional, moral society. Or I might have chosen to write something about the way that its nostrums are not so much a nationalist as a neo-imperialist attempt to organize a whispering campaign against me. But, instead, I've decided to devote this entire letter to explaining how it is a cardinal principle that Slashdot's newsgroup postings are just an outcropping of its hatred of us. I guess I should start by saying that it is easy to see faults in others. But it takes perseverance to call for proper disciplinary action against Slashdot and its lickspittles. When a political condition of greed, massive corruption, and diversity of objective is coupled to a social condition of drugs, violence, and discontent, therein exists the perfect environment for Slashdot to make us dependent on surly, paltry adolescents for political representation, economic support, social position, and psychological approval. I'll try not to dwell on this, but if you're interested in the finagling, double-dealing, chicanery, cheating, cajolery, cunning, rascality, and abject villainy by which Slashdot may permit postmodernist vandals to rise to positions of leadership and authority sometime soon, then you'll want to consider the following very carefully. You'll especially want to consider that Slashdot says that everyone would be a lot safer if it were to monitor all of our personal communications and financial transactions -- even our library records. Why on Earth does Slashdot need to monitor our library records? A complete answer to that question would take more space than I can afford, so I'll have to give you a simplified answer. For starters, we have a dilemma of leviathan proportions on our hands: Should we plant markers that define the limits of what is unregenerate and what is not, or is it sufficient to punish those who lie or connive at half-truths? I can give you only my best estimate, made after long and anxious consideration, but I do not pose as an expert in these matters. I can say only that if we are powerless to build a new understanding that can transport us to tomorrow, it is because we have allowed Slashdot to remake the world to suit its own nerdy needs. Our attempts to warn the public against those malign nebbishes whose positive accomplishments are always practically nil, but whose conceit can scarcely be excelled, have so far served only as a divertissement for Slashdot and its dupes. Yet the Establishment media consistently ignores, downplays, or marginalizes this fact.

Slashdot backstabs its encomiasts, yet my motivations for writing this letter are not of insult or hatred, but of the deepest love for mankind and the truest concern for its future generations. This sort of vertiginous paradox is well known to most licentious wonks. How dare Slashdot destroy our youths' ability to relax, reflect, study, and meditate? If you read between the lines of Slashdot's smear tactics, you'll indisputably find that my aim is to enhance people's curiosity, critical acumen, and aesthetic sensitivity. Whatever weight we accord to that fact, we may be confident that it's really not bloody-mindedness that compels me to promote peace, prosperity, and quality of life, both here and abroad. It's my sense of responsibility to you, the reader. It's not easy for me to say this, but the choice we face as a nation is whether to run our country ourselves or let gutless, unbridled bozos run it for us. There, I said it. Now I can continue with my previous point, which is that to Slashdot's mind, its vices are the only true virtues. So that means that its blessing is the equivalent of a papal imprimatur, right? No, not right. The truth is that like a verbal magician, Slashdot knows how to lie without appearing to be lying, how to bury secrets in mountains of garbage-speak.
