  1. Unfortunately Unreliable, on Admission Tickets as Text Messages · · Score: 1

I currently work for a ticketing company in Australia,

We recently did a gig where Vodaphone were using this technology, as cool as it is, we all noticed it was also remarkably unreliable.

Out of the 60 people on his list... He had to do 30 manual lookups because 'It couldn't read the codes properly'. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it was the custom phone covers, cracked screens or just simple incompatabilities with the phone screens. So until they can over come all the variables involved in getting atleast a 95% success rate which is very important especially when you have 10,000 people standing in line then I think this concept/technology will be a gymick for a long time.

  7. Re:Instead of sharing non-free music on BitTorrent: Sysadmins to face the music · · Score: 4, Insightful

I find the concept of 'free' music quite interesting; I mean most music available at record shops is popular mainly due to marketing. Very few people will buy a cd for $20+ of a band they've never heard; even if it's for one song they've only sorta heard. But it get's a bit of press or marketing hype and there sold.

There are 100's to 1000's of great bands out there but the majority that i've worked with (Which is quite a few) really only care about 2 thing's getting laid and making money.

Until these act's start relizing that money's not everything then we could see a huge industry change.

Why does every single 'small/unknown' band with anyform of a recording want to charge for it? Covering costs? I hardly think so. $10 (AUD) for some local bands EP's is kind of rediculous. If they really wanted to be heard they would either sell it at cost or make it freely available.

But until musician's stop caring about the bottom line free music will probably never become a reality. I hope it does. But we've all got to eat. And unlike the open source world of computers most musicians' would be quite angered if you hacked up one there songs and re-released it on the net.

(Sorry that doesn't make but you get my point even if it is kina offtopic)

Although if you look at windows 2000 server it's what 5 years old and still in production. I mean we won't see the next windows server till atleast 2007 which sorta makes debian look reasonably good with it's current release cycles.

I mean the windows world and the linux world are two totally different beast's and i will admit other distro's really have taken two steps forward in the stable branches compared to debian woody but the basis is still the same and IMO debian really does the same job better then a few other current distributions.

In the server world I really only rely on Debian for the mission critical stuff and you know what? So far so good....

I think all this patenting is actually a bad move on m$'s behalf..

Think about it, if they keep patenting little stupid things like this as an attempt to cripple and slow down alternate desktops such as X from advancing in the market place then this in the long run is probably a bad move,

As it's already been proved many times that if you make something not possible for someone they will work out a compromise and at least 70% of the time come up with something better and more efficient.

Obviously the desktop war is far from over but the industry needs innovation (Even if it has to be forced into it)
